Jindy to Bullocks is about 20km as the crow flies. Let’s say it’s 15km of tunnel.

Let’s say it’s cheap at ~$500M/km, this prices it at about the same broad ballpark as Sydney Metro Northwest ($7 to 8bn project cost, AIUI, around 80,000 pax/day in this first year of operation so far).

Not really sure that’s going to be a government priority any time soon. Skiing’s big, but not that big.

No need for a tunnel. Single track with passing points along the road reserve. Just don't mention the George Street light rail roll out.

How’s the grades and vertical alignment LOL

So we’ve dragged it back to, say, $2bn. That’d stack up well LOL

Next hit job will be propper..... ;)

If you have ever spent time at CP you would realise that your suggestion is would totally destroy CP and everything that is good and quirky about it. It would just be another extension of Perisher.... i.e. Penriff with snow......

At some stage the Perisher horde will end up at CP as the snowline keeps creeping upwards.

I'm not proposing it. I'd advocate banning cars and having a fleet of high speed, tailor made electric buses.

Well, we face two environmental challenges: global warming and a rising snow level and a recycling / waste crisis. Solution is to pile all our junk on top of the main range and raise the height to circa 3000m. Problem solved ;)

Why not start a ski , snowboard, mountain bike and something else party and put up a couple of senators for the next NSW election.

Stand for a new village for Perisher, Golf Course and Stanley’s lifts for Thredbo.

A new resort at Twin Valleys and anything else you can think of.

Actually win win win. Going to 3000m would introduce a whole new type of environment to australia providing new ecological niches for existing species to migrate and adapt to so the third win is it will increase biodiversity...... given a bit of time for evolution to work it's magic. 3000m in our high precip environment might be just high enough for a few small glaciers to form on shady lee side's of the highest summit's. This will provide a sustainable water.supply for the ski metropolis that will inevitably develop once Jindy is linked to the 3000m high resorts, Sydney and Melbourne by the long awaited VFT.

Dont replace the oversnow transport (just upgrade it)

I think that is part of the appeal and romance of CP.

All part of the daytrip experience, especially for kids/newbies

That's great for those whose lodge is within a stone's throw of front valley, not so convenient for those of us who have a 20+ minute walk to the nearest cleared road.

Yes, it will. A 20 minute walk is doable, but when you add on a 15+ minute wait for a bus you may as well have walked up Piper and slid down Link to get there; would be quicker for some of us. At the end of a long leg burning day, that sort of exertion is not always welcome.

It strikes me that the number of Australians that come to ski in NZ would suggest that you lot aren't actually all that worried about whether you can stay on the hill or not. Maybe the Jindy/Perisher model really does cater to a real market?

Cardrona put a lot of effort into developing on mountain accomodation with the hope of crystallising a village. It never took off. The closest they will get is a gondola up from the valley, but the valley is still a bit of a cold hole in the winter, and lakes the appeal of lake Wanaka in every other season.

The Jindy / Perisher set up is the set up. Potentially, Perisher could do the town centre thing because they could feasibly get a reasonable ROI on such a development. There is already more in Perisher than Cardrona to support year round living. There is nothing supporting the Cardrona village in the way of other accom, restaurants etc. Club lodges, ie people and commerce.

I honestly don't think the current skiing guests could care less if they were staying on the mountain or not. But if you build it they will come. If you don't build it they will still come but only for winter skiing. The goal of most resorts now is year round entertainment. Therefore a village of some sort is required to support that and the people that have businesses in the resort.

Cardrona tried pretty hard. There is minimal interest in staying above the snow line in NZ. Coronet Peak once had a pretty vibrant (if small) village vibe thanks to club lodges etc. Those lodges are mostly empty these days (but are fantastic cheap on snow options).

Lets make My Everhope even taller than 3000m by extending the tunnelled rail line to Eden and linking to Cooma. Your Eden to Canberra rial link for tourist and freight done, your mountain building exploits resources provided by a single project and now in late spring (or even summer if Mt Everhope gets high enough for glacier skiing) you'll be able to farm spring corn first thing as the morning sun hits the snow, jump on a train when it turns to slush and head to the coast for surf/swim and beers in the warm afternoon sun!

On a more sensible note, is there much that can be done to improve the efficiency and use of skitube, both in terms of lower cost (compared to tunneling to Jindabyne) physical upgrades to system to improve reliability and capacity and soft changes ie marketing/pricing/incentives. Then in terms of major infrastructure upgrades you'd perhaps be looking at converting the Alpine Way to dual carriage way as much as possible to ski tube, which I assume would not be nearly as costly as a railway tunnel - although getting over Penderlea would still be significant.

Combine this with resolving the village/head lease impasse at Perisher Valley (or at least finding a way for it to be attractive for smaller incremental increases in bed numbers at Perisher Valley). Maybe even encouraging increased bed numbers at Lake Crackenback and surrounds (perhaps a loosening of LEP Environmental Management controls in some of the lands adjacent to the National Park/Bullocks Flat - might not be feasible due to environmental protection and bush fire constraints?) and you might be able to make some in roads into congestion/crowding. Still lots of ifs though.

Perisher is almost all Alpine and sub Alpine. There isn't enough private Alpine and sub Alpine to offset. Perisher will never be a sunmer destination.

For the village maybe, but then the village to support summer business will need tracks, trails and summer activities like alpine coasters and whatever else which would all need to go in the alpine and sub alpine.

There's an interview with Peter Brulisauer in the one of the mountain magazines spring additions, Snowy Magazine or whatever it is called, talking specifically about village and summer and to me it says 'we are interested but phuck me there are a lot of constraints (environment and head lease) to get around so not sure we could actually be bothered with it considering we make a good buck out of winter, so lets just say we'll think about it and get back to you in five years'

The tracks and trails already exist as maintenance access.

I suspect that this "...we make a good buck out of winter..." may have a lot to do with it. NPWS are a convenient excuse.

Those tracks won't cut it if they want to compete with the rapidly evolving Thredbo-Jindabyne mountain bike network.

I actually quite like the idea of doing the Perisher town center...at Bullock's flat. Plenty of room outside the national park. Buy Lake Crackenback. Upgrade the Skitube and the Alpine Way.
