I think all of us agree that you should abide by the laws in a country you are visiting but feel entitled to criticise those laws and certainly argue against bringing those laws into your own country. Notwithstanding that I will obey the laws of Japan and accept the consequences if I don’t, I am able to argue that I think they go against basic human rights.

    This.

I have no problem with police enforcing the law in Japan and holding foreigners to the same standard as Japanese citizens. Appalling behaviour by tourists makes me just as mad as the next person. And if my family or friend did the wrong thing I’d expect them to pay the price, whatever that is.

The only thing I take issue with is not notifying of the arrest. A person vanishing without a trace for days on end. That’s a problem for so many more people than just the offender. Including the hotel where they were staying and haven’t checked out of for example...
If notification came then a friend or family member could organise to pay their hotel bill and store thier luggage, and get a lawyer sorted if needed, and change flights etc etc.

Can't believe this thread. Not allowed to criticise Japan's system? Next there'll be a defence of how they treat/treated POWs.

Nonsense. Their system is copping plenty of criticism. What we can't do is expect them to change it just for us. Well, I guess we are free to "expect" anything we want, but good luck with that- it's no better than pissing in the wind but also probably pretty hypocritical given the way some people criticise the behaviour of foreigners here in Australia.

Is anybody saying it should be changed for us? Or that it should be changed for human rights? (Rights of loved ones, not the rights of convicted crims)

As I read this there are two issues being conflated: one is criticising the legal system of a country and the other is criticising the behaviour (not necessarily by foreigners) in a country. If the laws of a country, any country, goes against human values (I'm prepared to narrow it to Western values) then I would hope we could influence change. "it's no better than pissing in the wind ..." I think those who protested against apartheid in South Africa or USSR communism might disagree. How's that for being overly dramatic.

Ha, those guards ans rules are just anachronisms from a WW2 POW camp. I bet if they were allowed, they'd carry Katanas as well

That last bit where they refuted things was hilarious! 55 minutes of watching the military like conditions (I had less in recruit training!) and he’s sitting there “I don’t think they are military at all. All companies and schools are just like this”. LOL

I had lost interest once they started talking about it.. I was more interested in what their daily lives involved...

I like the idea of the calories being restricted, deny pleasure ...

I googled in Japanese but couldn't find anything related to it.

Where is the woman?. The woman called the police and he was arrested for sexual assault or something?.

Is solicitation a crime in Japan? Can he be held under decency laws/prostitution? Pure speculation here.

I suspect that there may have been a misunderstanding about the commerciality of their arrangement.

Yeah, given the options of what is likely to have happened, not surprising we aren't hearing about it if he has actually done something illegal. In Japanese terms the family might very well be "saving face" after being aggrieved by the initial situation.

Friend of mine worked as a hostess in one of the Shinjuku Clubs- she says there's no such thing as independent operators in Japan
