LOL actually some pretty nice weather at the moment a reasonably strong cold front and associated rain through today, with the chance of some storms tomorrow morning.
My obs from home showed the front coming through at about 9 am - dont trust the wetbulb, has a 5C offset I reckon, but dry-bulb and wind is correct.

Bickley observations ( where 2 dams are located) has recorded around 52mm in the last 24 hours which is a great result

Yeah ... I only trust Perth Rain Bucket for rainfall totals ... a semi reliable, marginally honest, somewhat accurate, haphazard reporter of rainfall events

How many buckets are strategically located? Quantities vary dramatically.

Snd I’m quite convinced that the rain clouds parts ways and go around canning vale all the time

The Perth Rain Bucket is the most important rain bucket, no other rain buckets matter.

Where it is located is a closely guarded secret lest one of its many adoring fans steal it ...

We have a little creek side camping spot deep in a forest North East of Perth - inland from gingin / Bindoon / Chittering. Anyway, even in late spring it is usually flowing and we've had many a trip there.

We went there lsat weekend after the 230mm+ over 3 weeks prior, and the creek and terrain were bone dry. The small creek crossings we anticipated were dry. I'm guessing the hills soak up an enormous amount of rain before they run!

We were utterly baffled. Did so much of the moisture over past month somehow skip the forest / northern pre-wheatbelt towns

Your second para is correct. Even though we've had a lot of rain lately, we're still well down on our year-to-date average. The creeks don't start flowing properly until the soil profile saturates and the groundwater hits the surface in all the little high-level swamps and valleys. Across much of the hills, that just never happens any more. Therefore many creeks only flow for a day or so after a downpour, when the rain falls too fast to soak in.

Some pretty awesome cloud streets over most of WA today (click for full sized image) From the largescale features over the Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts, to the finer more traditional cloud streets over goldfields. Awesome Altocumulus Undulatus!

Yes, this latest rainfall event has just triggered a winter response in many of the south west rivers systems even after 350mm plus in some areas. Our surface topography & hydraulic profiles are generally very low gradient, whilst our rainfall events are relatively low intensity which further encourages infiltration over run off.

My rule of thumb for anticipating river levels for paddling in the wetter areas further south is basically 200mm needed in a month to prepare the ground conditions for run off, obviously variable with preceding sub surface moisture levels etc. I won't even look at dusting off the whitewater paddles before that.

Some of my hidden granite treasures are just starting to move down in the big forests about 3-4 weeks behind schedule.

    All fear the "blocking high...."

While the blocking highs of winter arguably produce the best weather (clear air, light winds, long distance clarity, a sun mild enough to actually exert yourself & not combust) of the year in the south, they steal from our moisture bank for the endless summer ahead.

That slowing moving bastard is going to steer a few more systems into than south east than the westward peaking systems of the last month though.

It would seem that Perth is expecting some inclement weather and (local shopping mall) London Court has taken precautionary measures

    Stay on Topic CW LOL

(It’s cringie for me but my parents love it, and it’s their generation it was built for, so it exists as an example of ‘what was’ in Perth.)

Yep, cringie is the right word, even with today's "English rain".

The first time I saw it over 20 years ago I was like "WTF?" That was on a scorching hot Australian day in the middle of a summer spell of endless clear blue skies. Would that have been caused by a "blocking high"? The place just looks like a failed homage to an idea that never existed here. What a place to sell Aboriginal Art tourist kitsch from. I wonder if those pieces was made in Indonesia? I'd like to say I'm not trying to rain on their parade, but I'd be lying. I wonder if we will get enough wind to remove those umbrellas- anyone know what the forecast holds wind wise?

We should have our entire shopping precinct done in American chrome plating should we?

Any one want to hazard a guess as to when Perth will get its next decent rainfall? I have to drain my rainwater tank and I don't want to wait a month for it to start refilling.

BoM are forecasting up to 3mm and 10mm on Thursday and Friday (but you can see that forecast disapperaing as we get closer)

You can lock that thing in on Friday.
It's a moderately strong system and has been there for 7-10 days. Coastal thunderstorms Friday Arvo.
    Maybe 15-20mm, I'd say.
