Some good infeed out of the hook-turned NW.

Very cool day in Perth today, with a chilly maximum of 12.1 around 12.30pm.

    Loced it!

Many place on the south coast stayed in single figures today, with precipitation. Proper chill in the air.

Albany radar is very pretty tonight.

King River gauge has risen two metres in last few hours. Be some sneaky whitewater around those parts tomorrow, if you know where to look.

That fed cloud bank in the loop (running parallel to the Esperance Coast) above played a big role overnight.

    I'm a bit disappointed.

Purchased myself a fatastic Calvin Klein winter jacket last time I was in Canada, and I'm WFH so never got to wear it yesterday

Solid, upstanding front coming our way for Sunday, big, broad low driving it, plenty of NW infeed.

Going to be another good dose of wind for the SW corner, with some destructive squalls on the transition.

More traditional than the last system but still impressively horsepowered, looking good to hold form through the Bight & tidy up things over east, not just a western peaker.

    Actually a lovely chart.

6.5mm since 8am this morning. In a bit of a lul right now. It is always interesting how we get more rain up here (half way to Toodyay) than anywhere else. There are no close AWSs but most others around Perth are reporting 2-3mm only. I have an accurate rain guage and all our neighbours report similar numbers so it seems real. Suspect it is an orographic lift effect

I might need to get a rain gauge for the new place so I can participate in this thread with quantifiable comments rather than - it’s raining, has been for a while, and we have many fairly deep puddles.

Double to three times that little bit of lift. Bickley often tops the SW totals in N-S standing system like this, the highest ‘peaks’ on the range south of there (where bauxite mining denudes the range) suck in 1400mm or so a year, rivals the little wet spots around Walpole & the Prince Regent up north.

Moist & not that windy southerer.

Good day for fiddling with the boat....

Bickley is the closest in terms of similar environment to us, similar elevation, and surroundings, although it is 50km to the south.

New Australian max temp records set on consecutive days up in the Kimberley this weekend.
The previous August record of 40.0c was set at Kalumburu way back in 1970.
On Saturday, The Defence facility at Yampi Sound broke the old mark with 40.7c, and today West Roebuck reached 41.2c ! Outstanding heat for August..... and it is expected many Top End, Kimberley and Pilbara sites will record new August heat records before the end of the month.
All Top End weather nuts like seeing August heat.... the Kimberley heat low is the engine room for the impending storm season.

1/-Port Hedland might be one to watch today re August records.....35.8c at 09.40 WA time !
Depends on the sea breeze there of course, but its on track for a +40c you would reckon....
2/- And my Port Hedland prediction was a bit off, although I did pick the sea breeze as a possibility of crueling a record 40c attempt. The temp topped out at 37.9c at 11.24 am. Still an August record for the site. The old record has been broken 3 times in the last week !
Roebourne Airport maxed out a full 2.1c above the previous August record with a 38.5c today.
Marble Bar has broken the August ( for this site location ) record on 5 consecutive days including 4 in a row ( so far ) above the 37.8c ( 100f ) mark.
It really is an exceptional August heatwave in the north west of the Continent.

Given that we ( Top Enders ) are in the middle of that doldrum period of mindlessly similar weather day after day atm, I thought I would have a look at some sites on the Southern Coast, specifically the Great Australian Bight.
The combination of the huge continental landmass to the North and the Southern Ocean to the South gives the Nullabor region a unique climate in Australia. The variability and changeability of the weather is fair dinkum legendary.... with near 50c temps in the summer months and frosts that can happen at almost any time of the year. Anecdotally, regular travelers across the Nullabor can recall high 30's at say Ceduna, then a few hours west freezing temps at the Border Checkpoint. Been caught out myself a few times when running trucks across back in the day.....
So a few stats from the first 10 days of September and running West to East across the Nullabor ( same direction as the passage of the weather systems )

    Date Eyre Eucla Nullabor Ceduna.
    1/9 22.8 -10.1 33.1 - 10.1 35.0 - 7.4 28.1 - 6.3
    2/9 22.4 -10.6 22.0 - 8.7 22.6 - 8.7 22.4 - 8.5
    3/9 19.4 - 2.7 20.6 - 8.6 20.5 - 5.3 19.5 - 6.2
    4/9 21.1 - -0.1 26.2 - 6.1 24.8 - 4.1 22.3 - 2.1
    5/9 30.7 - 4.6 27.0 - 7.0 26.6 - 5.6 23.2 - 1.9
    6/9 36.5 - 6.2 36.3 - 13.2 34.4 - 8.8 30.9 - 6.7
    7/9 19.7 - 11.5 23.7 - 17.3 37.6 -19.7 37.9 - 19.1
    8/9 23.0 - 5.8 18.0 - 10.7 17.7- 12.2 17.5 - 14.8
    9/9 26.0 - 8.2 29.2 - 13.1 21.0 -12.7 22.5 - 11.3
    10/9 ? - 14.5 40.1 - 12.4 38.6 - 8.6 35.0 - 14.5
    And forecast max's today 11/9/20
    26c 20c 22c 29c
Both Eucla and Nullabor set September record maximum temps yesterday
And as an aside, there has been a great deal of chat on world weather forums re the huge temp changes in the Mountain states of the USA in the last week ie Denver and Caspar with near 100f temps to freezing/snow two days later.
Well, Eyre is renowned for massive changes too ( never snow at sea level of course ) from a 32f on the 4th to a 97.7f on the 6th ! What an horrendous ( by Aussie standards ) climate ....lol !

So can any weather boffins tell me how wet Saturday and Monday morning are going to be? in GinGin?
"shower or two" seems to be what BOM are saying, yet other apps show a pretty wet picture.

3 day Sea Scouts group camp ... and peak precip appears to be right on setup and takedown, my pet hate is setting camps in the wet!

thing about WA is we have so much good weather that I'm actually pretty intolerable of bad weather!

but you're right, we've seen enough of it ... just a little ironic that the setup (sat AM) and pack away (monday AM) are the two peaks of the the weather this weekend.

    Kids give zero f's!

It did give me excuse to buy a new $450 ski shell this week to use as a rain coat too :) (got it for $180 clearance at kathmandu... seems noones buying ski gear in WA!)

I always find this time of year a tad confusing.
From heaters and hoodies one day to tank tops and sunscreen the next!

I disagree with the 6 season Noongar calendar. IMO we have two seasons: shorts weather, and not shorts weather. Inevitably I get caught out a few times a year in the transition periods.

Yeah I gave the new Patagonia shell a run at the nephews footy game on Sunday. 10/10.

Worked in a paddock in 23 the other day.

With all the knee deep pasture transpiration, felt like 43. In the civilised south, first couple of days above 20 I find tough.
