Yeah I meant Valdez, not Anchorage, doh
Valdez was pretty much where it all started in AK. Was very much cowboy operations initially, but gradually matured, then spread to other parts of the state.
I met your mate here (MW?) Finished his guide training last week, working remotely from here this week and then here for another 3 weeks as a client. Really nice guy, got his life / work balance very well in order and clearly bloody good at what he does in "work " mode. Can ride too !!!
New weather system moved in overnight but we're ready for a break. Skied 6/7 days which is verrrry uncommon apparently. Nearly burned all our heli hours for the 2 weeks so the PNH cash register will start cranking over again if we do another couple of days this week. As at the end of yesterday we've ticked 50 runs. Bluebird days and for the most part really good dry snow. Later in the week we were coming across a little bit of wind affected stuff on certain aspects of the descents but I can't say enough good about the guide that we have. He's super experienced, originally from the States but lives and runs guide courses out of Wanaka now since the mid 90's. Hes really found some great spots for us. Nothing terrifying (yet) but a few pitches that were up around 45-50 degrees with good slough which keeps you on your toes and a couple of landings and accesses that do the same.
I'll load up a few more photos later this morning.
Wow sounds like you have been so lucky with fly days ........ thinking about heading back there next year !!!!!!
Indeed. I got more like 2/7 fly days for my weeks in Girdwood & Valdez in 2000, plus a couple of cat days.
Yep good ratio, I got 3 full..
Dying with FB atm, Jen Milton is over there, yesterday with Black Ops looked amazeballs. You lucky ^%#$^$#^%ers!
One year bro!
Bit of this? yesterday....
Lovin this thred
Amazing ...... Stunning
Love the picture of the helicopter
this thread makes me sad
Run/photo 3 was my first AK run, was shitting my pants
That be him, @luvthabumps. Definitely on a good wicket.
Looks like some good times at PNH this season.
oh yeah - apart from week 1 it's been great so far. All the week 1 guys were French who were there for 2 weeks anyway so they got great skiing with us in Week 2. They just had a huge reset this week as well. The guys at Tour Camp were estimating 4-6' of snow fell.
MW's pics and the the pics that PNH have posted of him on FB are awesome. We had a blast and will definitely be going back.
Is your guide Peter Bilous?
If so he's a good man and really knows his Sh!t.
Didn't realise he was working in Alaska now as well.
His two boys do quite nicely also.
yep - he was awesome - great guide and great bloke. We are all similar vintage and after a few days we were all like old buddies. He really made us feel secure and then gradually pushed us out of our comfort zone but knew exactly when was the right time to do it. We had a blast and will be friends for a long time. I'm packing him off some Vegemite tomorrow actually.
His boys are awesome skiers - he showed us some video and I've been following them on Instagram. They are a couple of Kiwi kids to watch that's for sure - 2 medals at YOG is testament to Finn's ability. Peter was tearing his (what's left of it) hair out that the older one never lets them know where he is or what he's doing - 19 year olds hey
Great times. I'm trying to convince Mrs LTB that we should go to Wanaka for a few days in August and hopefully get a day in the Heli with him if I organise well enough in advance.
Far right is me
Second season this year.
Great pics LTB.
Between Wanaka, Alaska and seeing his boys on the world circuit he is getting around a bit. They have been competing in the Heli challenge in Wanaka the last few years.
Just sent email for round 2 in 2017 !!!!!!!
looks like we're going to alternate 'cos I'm going to try and tee up my second trip for 2018
just a few last pics from this trip that I'll leave here.
boot packing in to Hidden Couloir
Deposit Paid 2017 !!!!!!!!
they strapped a cam to the basket of our chopper one morning. I'm last one out in the first part of the clip
they are slaying dragons in the Chugach this week - Pontoon, Sphinx, Tusk one day after another - anyone there? @smackies - Matt W is having the trip of a lifetime - the pics on IG and FB are crazy.
I've got two buddies flying out today with some of their (adult) kids. Really hope for them the forecast reset is quick and they get a new high pressure pattern early / mid next week.
Oh yes. The barrage on social media is endless.
