    When it’s not your hike!

prepping the food for @DidSurfNowSki and @skifree self isolation hike in southwest Tassie.

Some of the meals ready to go

I try and keep meals to around 200g a person so breakfast lunch dinner and snacks, as the weight of breaky and snacks usually is under the total fat weight is about 700g.

I normally just use the commercial freeze dried food....
    Back country etc
I would like to say I live off what we catch from the Tasmanian lakes, but it never seems to work that way.

Why are you prepping food for others if you aren't going?

I guess I enjoy cooking and food! The food we produce self dehydrating is so much better than the freeze dry stuff.

@DidSurfNowSki asked me about the food we prep for hikes, he knows I have the dehydrator and vac pack so asked about food and I offered.

I’m just jealous now not to be hiking with.

I just don’t get going to all that effort to walk in somewhere cool for New Years and end up drinking shit you wouldn’t touch any other day of the year.

@DidSurfNowSki go with something you will enjoy, if it’s a red to go with dinner, perfect or a scotch or port for post dinner fire watching even better.

This is all very sophisticated! Much more impressive than the Deb and freeze-dried stuff I used to survive on in the bush. If you’re still doing the South Coast track, you’ll need lots of energy for the Ironbound mountain range. I have some pretty dreadful memories of that (hypothermia ...).

he is young and should carry far more than a bottle of rum. I have done a four day hike with four staff members where we carried a bottle of wine per person per day plus a special usually spirits but this got out of control after few years and ended up four full bottles. So on our last walk we had 15kg of liquid plus weight of the plastic. Long and short of it, our starting pack weights were 16kg so one pack was alcohol.

your only wearing shorts as your water proof pants have crawled to the back of your cupboard and hidden in fear of being taken to Tassie as they would tear at the sight of the scrub let alone walking through it!

I make my own noodle soups using dried ingredients obtained from East Asian grocery shops.
