    Email from Qantas just now:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Direct flights from Sydney to Sapporo have just been added for the ski season, so it’s even easier to hit the famous slopes in Hokkaido.
    Famous for its thriving food scene and annual snow festival, this vibrant city sits on the doorstep of one of the world's best ski destinations. From the finest powder at Niseko Ski Resort to the hot springs in the Hokkaido mountains and the fascinating culture of Japan's fifth-largest city, Sapporo will be a magical winter holiday to remember.
    The new Qantas seasonal service will operate three direct flights departing Sydney every week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays for travel from 16 December 2019 to 28 March 2020.
    This is great news although it would be even better if it was from Brisbane
    Or from Perth!
    Actually I’m happy.
    If I want to take advantage of the FF benefits with Qantas it meant 3 fights zig zagging from Perth to Sapporo. It was so much easier to get less benefit and go Cathay via HK. Now with Perth -Sydney- Sapporo it’s a no brainer.
    I’ll investigate the flight timings today, a double status credit offer currently in play, might have to make some big decisions.
    Same.
    I’ve been checking combos and sending through to the boss ;)
    Problem I have is not having my course dates yet.
    But I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on a 88-90 day span coming home on either the last or second last flight.
    One of those options is on our 30th wedding anniversary though - so will depend if he is coming with me or not, whether that date is in play.
    Need to decide tonight to take advantage of double status credit offer...
    I think it’ll be more likely just to take a bit of pressure off the Sydney - Tokyo route and the domestic flights, and snatch back some customers from other airlines that fly into Sapporo. The people won’t change where they go, just the route they take to go there.
    Actually as someone who hates flying Niseko was off the list due to a lack of direct flights. I would consider going there now.
    From Sydney?
    Yes, I guess it would make a difference for people in Sydney if they had an aversion to flying and a single leg makes it then possible.
    My thought process was 3 flights to 2 Q or 2 Flights Q v 2 flights Other Carrier - but of course that’s for those of us not in Sydney.
    My bad.
    Shame it doesn’t start earlier - we were planning on visitng our place pre- RWC for a few days. But ANA Perth- Tokyo direct so might go that way instead. No ff benefits tho...
    Day flight has disadvantages with a longer trip for many. May make PE more attractive and BC less so.
    Overnight on the way back though.
    Being only 3 days a week will be interesting.
    It restricts flexibility a bit.
    Hopefully they can land them nowadays.
    Used to be a problem for the AO 330 (or were they 767-300ers) flights to CTS.
    I remember the old flights. Oddly started when Hackworth had bought into Hanazono.
    Once AO folded. The flights finished.
    Never heard of problems up there, the aeroplane is/was sufficiently equipped for the facilities.
    Had landing issues. Had to divert.
    We were staying with a guy who drove a bus to CTS to pick up the punters.
    Happened alot he reckoned. Was random.
    Was actually the owner of deep powder tours.
    They were the biggest (or second ) tour group in Niseko at the time.
    I recall it pretty well.
    Mind you. May have just been the season for CTS to get shut down. We got stuck there for 18 hours.
    Snowy cold spot that
    Is this still a thing?
    Every booking I try to make (mon/wed/sat) only offers Narita stop over.
    While this is not great for your trip Reece, it does indicate that the demand for such a route is there - I would’ve booked this flight two more times (Aug/Sept sept/oct) if it had been available outside of ski season. I’ve gone Cathay via HK instead.
    Strong bookings will help this stay as a regular route rather testing the waters.
