I am currently half way through a 7 hour delay for my 90 min flight from Syd to Mel.

Somebody post something funny to entertain me

If you had started walking when the delay first happened you would already be at Liverpool.

Are you on Qantas or Deathstar?

I'm surprised that there has not been a vacant seat on the (guess) 15 flights that have left during the delay. What's their excuse?

    Wind.
I am not an aeronautical engineer but I thought they needed wind to fly. Appears I am wrong about this

Probably out of limits for crosswind. Tullamarine only has runways in one direction so not much flexibility if winds are other than the most common directions

    No it doesn't.

the shorter east west would only create a problem the biggest of the heavies.

It's a SSW so they are just on the main north south.

After 7 hours of delays they used the old, we don’t have a crew and we’ll be fighting the curfew etc.

    Did you get home?
The runways are just east of south at Tulla. The wind gusts picked up around 11.50am yesterday from the SSW, peaking at 63kph. The differential from sustained to gusts was around 50%+ and a crosswind, so that was probably the problem.
Mind you, that didn't drop off until after midnight.

I have Brooklyn Nine Nine downloaded from Netflix.. always at the ready for such emergencies.

After a decade or so of exposure, I no longer find DJOTD enough to entertain me for long periods.

byo device has really changed delays, in a big way.

When I'm in the cabin and delays get announced, these days most people shrug and look back at their devices savouring the opportunity to have some time doing nothing but watching something they want.
    (Excessive delays aside)
It's quite remarkable compared to the groans and immediate complaints that would arise only a few years back.

Interesting observation that. Certainly holds true for me. Especially with my weekly train commute Newie to Syd. I'm always loaded up with vision and reading.

Plus, making this forum more mobile friendly has made a big change to the increase in my habit of dropping in in those moments 'in between' on commutes. I also see it in the analytics.

Alternative theory would be that delays are just BAU now.

“This is your Captain @piolet here with my trusty side kick @di6loc , we’ll push back from the gate and get you on your way once we have finished our latte. Hope that’s ok.” :out:;)

Made it home on the last flight which was due to depart at 10:05pm
At approx 10:15 they announced there was a delay as they had no crew.
At approx 10:35 the Captain announced they still had no cabin crew but were hoping to get one and then spoke of the Sydney curfew. He also said there is nothing they can do and when he said that people started yelling that they’ve had 5+ hours to get it arranged.
We boarded very quickly at 20 to 11 and pushed back with minutes to spare.

Hahaha 0/10 would not fly ;) more likely waiting for the crew to clean up the aeropress mess in the galley LOL

    What's BAU?
Yeah at busy times Mel/Syd delays do seem the norm unfortunately. I don't think much of the airspace design/management.

Mixed base crewing (cabin mostly) for "efficiency" (ie. For that particular departments KPIs) really falls apart on those sorts of days, the knock on affects can really screw things up. I'm glad you made it home. Nothing worse than all that waiting to not go anywhere...
We were waiting for crew caught up in that up north yesterday too. Nothing too dramatic thankfully
