Martian counting (from a textbook on Assembler programming):

    Foo, bar, bas, bat
    Fooby, barby, basby, batby
    Foobitty, barbitty, basbitty, batbitty
    Foobidity, barbidity, basbidity, batbidity...

Apparently (according to the textbook) a Martian standing at a bus stop counting his pocket change started the diddy do wop craze in the '50's.

Used to fly out of Sydney to Narita regularly , issue was both airports had curfews so the overnight flight sat at the end of Kingsford Smith runway till the last possible moment , then took off just before 11 . Then a few circles over Tokyo bay whilst waiting for Narita to open and being first to land.

Should have flown with an airline who gives no shit about curfews. The arab airlines dont seem to worry too much about them.

Indeed , they can pay the fines , which are huge i believe.
I think the Sydney airport thing is an issue in Australia , apparently our air force doing sorties in the middle east would only fly between 6 am and 11 pm ;)

You know your place when you're sitting on the tarmac waiting for the curfew to end and an Emirates bypasses you and says see yah without a care in the world.

I dont get why there is a curfew in Sydney.

You either take off or land over water or over a container terminal. The newer planes are a lot quieter than the older ones.
Time for a review of the curfew.

Unless you take off or land to the north-west, which happens. Those take offs are over Bennelong, Howard's old electorate. i doubt there is a connection between that and the curfew.

    There's a few challenges!

First up, if they're landing over water, they're taking off over the container terminal. But that terminal is only a few hundred metres wide, so after that you're waking up inner suburbia. And when they're landing from the north, they're coming in for quite a time over lots of suburbia, so you'd be waking up thousands of peeps every night if you let planes operate outside the curfew.

But the main problem is that the absolute best thing about Sydney airport is the thing that necessitates the curfew: it's actually conveniently located to the city. It's not like Melbourne, Perth, Canberra, or Brisbane that are so far out into the countryside that the only thing you're disturbing is cattle. Sydney is a city airport that's 10 minutes from the CBD (in clear traffic which only happens when you're not late for a flight).

The 2nd airport is much more rural, so 24 hour flights will disturb far fewer folks out there. Might be a chance if they get in quick before it gets too built up and too many residents action groups give it a curfew as well.

P.S. Where was the ping for a beer?!

Pretty much bang on. You're passing over tens of thousands of very wealthy NIMBYs. You don't go pissing them off.

Hence why they might have more luck getting the bogans out west to accept 24 hour noise.

The best will be when they shut down Kingsford Smith and turn it into over-priced housing estate and all those NIMBYs need to drive 45 hours to Eastern Creek, after googling where it actually is, to catch their flight.

What's the cost of retro-fitting double glazing and insulation into 20,000+ homes? It'd be a brave government that got that up.

And if you want to talk laughable, how about having to sit in a taxi for an hour to reach the CBD? Melbourne airport transport shows just what a backwater the city is. Even Perth is installing a train, and Brisbane is decades ahead. The amount of times I've allowed 2 hours to get from Tulla to the CBD only to arrive late for a meeting is just comical.

If you're going to pretend to be a commercial hub you can't put your airport halfway to Wodonga and then just expect everyone to lose 2 hours of sleep so that they can make their business meetings on time.

I think you'll find that our chauffeurs know the way.

And until that day I'll take landing over glittering beaches, stunning harbour vistas, and views of the Opera House and Harbour bridge, over views of farmer Joe on his Massey Ferguson ploughing cow pats.

Are they allowed to have cattle in back yards out near Tulla?

Just wait for the squealing when they eventually build the 3rd and/or 4th runway.

The curfew made a lot more sense in the age of the 727. These days an A380 could pass over head and you'd barely know. It's just not going to wake thousands up.

Yeah, they're much quieter now. But I was in Leichardt the other day and the noise was still pretty immense when they went over. And Leichardt is a bit of a way from the airport. I really feel for folks in Sydenham and the like. How do they sleep ouside curfew hours?

The government isnt the one losing sleep, it's the snotty residents who moved in next to an airport and complained about the noise (dont kid yourself that they were all there before the airport went in son). But like I said, they'll cop it when they'll have to drive further than people in Melbourne to get to an airport in a decade or 2. Speaking of which, we got a grant, or a study or something, for a rail link, so we're targeting completion in 2065. Maybe by the time that's done the price of a ticket will be about the same as the extortion Sydney airport currently charge you to use their train (inter-terminal) and buses.

The problem with Sydney is that's where the good stuff ends, the second you land. On the way in, if it's not pissing rain which it does more often than Melbourne, you'll see some good sights, but the second the wheels touch down the disappointment (and congestion) begins.

I'd much rather pay $17 for a 15 minute train ride to where I'm going than $100 in a stinky cab while the driver practices ramming his accelerater/brake pedal through the firewall. Or worse yet, insists on trying to tell me why it's so important that some AFL player shagged some other AFL player's wife.

And when the train gets me to the city an hour earlier than Melbourne's stinky cab, rather than staring at a muddy river I can have a drink looking at this:

In the time it takes you to get to Melbourne CBD, you can take a train to Circular Quay and a ferry to Manly. You can drink beer on the ferry. And when you get there you're in Manly surrounded by bikinis, not in Melbourne surrounded by guys in footy jerseys.

That beer alone in Sydney costs more than a 'stinky cab ride'
Maybe thats why NRL players do that 'bubbler' thing you all like up there. Can actually afford the beer.

Fligjts are over about half a dozen state or federal seats, a few of which change sides every few elections. It’s naive to expect that politics wouldn’t play a part in managing the efficiency and profitability of a disliked private enterprise. Hating kingsford-smith ap is a city-wide game.

There is no feasible way to insulate and double glaze every affected home, although there was a programme for a while that was government funded.

Pretty major aircraft noise would impact around half a million people from hunters hill in the north, and across the eastern subs and different routes in the inner west. It’s essesntially the most densely populated part of the country.

Badgerys Creek will never be the main airport for the bulk of passenger flights. It’ll be a high level of freight, low cost carriers and some overflow or maybe evening flights if there’s no change to the curfew. Same as I can’t see myself ever visiting Melbourne via Avalon.

Except the beer is more expensive in Melbourne. I have done an extensive comparison!

The cost of the Sydney train is fine, unless you're moving a family. It is cheaper than the SkyBus is, which is the relevant comparison for Melbourne PT options to the airport.
