Thought the above was interesting look. Well documented disruption during descent of 2016 westerly phase, is a little hard to see clearly. There's quite a bit of variation in the descent and duration of these easterly-westerly phases as can be seen.
I am unsure whether the re-appearance of easterlies in current westerly phase about Jan this year around 45 hpa, is just an outlier of the easterly phase with typical variation, or a sign of a significant disruption from some other atmospheric cycle. Does look to be unusual in the context since 1953.

Below captures 2015-16 disruption better. Currently looks like "tail" often typical of westerly phase in lower stratosphere is absent - a rapidly descending easterly? - but waiting for June data.

Interesting that the article doesn't cite the abnormally strong +IOD influence of 2019.

....I thought along the lines of suppression of convection & equatorial wave driving preconditioning the QBO maybe? The transfer of momentum producing the disturbance came from south(of the border!), that seems to have encouraged the interest&excitement.Bit of "a cat among the pigeons" now that the canonical understanding of QBO has blown.
