We have just booked a long w/e to take the family to Perisher. We have only ever skiied Thredbo (& Japan) since having kids so despite having skiied many times at Perisher ourselves there are a few logistics we have never considered re kids. Hoping someone can help with answers:

    1. Are the kids lessons based at Blue Cow or Perisher or both? Our kids are in Freeriders lessons at Thredbo, levels 6/7 and 4.
    2. Are there overnight ski lockers somewhere close to where the lessons are?
    3. Are there day lockers for shoes etc close to where the lessons are?

Other info - we intend to catch the Skitube.

    Thanks for any help!

I'm not sure about lessons, but the Perisher website should tell you. There are lockers in the Perisher Centre which should do the job if you're catching the tube and having lessons from Front Valley. Again there is info on these on their website.

Check where the lessons are. They can be at various places.

there are lockers at Perisher and at Blue Cow.

Yes you would think so, but there is very little info on the website.

have you booked the lessons yet?

There has been some confusion recently due to lifts being closed. My mogul skier did 2 trips between Perisher and Blue Cow finding a school group he was instructing the other day. Lifts were mostly closed at blue cow so they could not go there even though that was where they were booked.

All Day lessons for all levels at Front Valley in Perisher starting at 9:30. Intermediate/Advanced 3 Hour lessons are at 10:30 over at Blue Cow. Don't bother with Smiggins as its is very beginners focused. Make sure the kids are in the right level, as Perisher uses a different level system to Thredbo (and often puts kids in the wrong groups). Lockers for both day and overnight available in the Perisher Centre and Blue Cow Terminal and both are easy access via Skitube.

Are you able to provide any insight into the Perisher vs Thredbo level difference. Kids have always had lessons at Thredbo and going to give them a few Perisher lessons, but obviously want to make sure levels are correct.

Thredbo Level 7 would probably correspond with the Advanced group at Perisher, mostly more difficult technical work and starting to explore off piste. Level 4 would roughly correspond with Intermediate Foundation, doing paralell turns on Blue runs. Only a rough guide though. Unfortunately Perisher, unlike Thredbo isn't very forthcoming with useful information and this based off what I have see in the past.

Hopefully you have a good time at Perisher, but as someone who has used both the Thredbo and Perisher ski schools often, you may be a little disappointed.

Very true, the website is designed to prevent any real planning or review & funnels you into end points.

It’s a rubbish web site for customers.

Gah! that sucks. Was hoping to avoid Front Valley, such a pain getting there with kids and gear.

Ideally I'd like to take the kids straight to Blue Cow and start their all-day lessons there. Carry our ski boots up and put our day shoes into a locker. At the end of the day put our skis (and helmets if poss) into O/N lockers and change back into day shoes, take our boots back down with us.

    More planning required...

Got a reply to my online query - they don’t actually run lessons at all on the last weekend of the season. Fn fabulous.

    And no overnight lockers.

I’m remembering why we’ve skiied Thredbo for 11 out the past 12 seasons.

That reminds me why I hate my yearly trips to Perisher and always bail for a day at Thredbo. They can be a bit useless up at Perisher.

We are going to Perisher only because my +1 has been itching to go back there as it has been so long and the kids have never experienced it. Maybe this trip will satisfy the itch once and for all and we can relax and continue skiing Thredbo (and Japan, NZ, Italy etc etc).

Blue cow wouldn't even be open last weekend of the season.... so that point is moot.

I've seen them run lessons before... but last weekend of the season and you want to ski all day?

Why wouldn't Blue Cow be open? Are you saying the lifts won't even be running?

    couple quick suggestions.
Give them a call. Always helps.
    Park at Smiggs.

edit. Blue Cow & Guthega usually shuts down mid Sept.

    They had it last year.
Poppy and her mates were the only ones skiing smiggs before it closed.
Was so dead the cafe opened just for them , with the owner giving away food.
Plus it gets So so slushy and slow ...you can't move

We are talking about 6 weeks from now and we are yet to hit maximum snow depth. Do they really decide to close half (2/3) of the resort without knowing what the conditions will be like?

    Yeah for sure.
Snow depth has absolutely nothing to do with the decision
Its purely a $$$$ thing. There is no one there.
Plus this year the school holidays for NSW are later than usual. They usually have the last week of september off

    oh . end of Sept.
Yep the joint will likely be shut down to bare minimum something like Front Valley , Eyre , Mt P triple , Happy V ( maybe) Leichardt....
Thredbo would be even less terrain, maybe just Merrits IMO

It's 14c degrees here in Jindy today, 27c on Saturday in Sydney. Sydney people will head to the beach instead of the snow soon (she says hopefully).

Fortunately we are also heading down 2 weeks time for a week so that will be our 'proper' ski trip. The closing w/e looks like being whatever we can squeeze out of it.

In 6 weeks time there may not be much resort snow left anywhere. Once that Northerly hair dryer has been running for a few days mixed in with some lovely warm rain....

Bottom third or half of Thredbo is very likely to be grass.

mmm not really. Our resorts close with a bigger base than we ever get becaue of lack of patronage and the workers needing to return to their other jobs - just like in Aus.
