Observations 25 July - 02 August Just thought I might start this as igt appears that their are currently some snow showers in NSW. Looking up the hill frim Jindy this afternoon I thought it looked like it was building and the Perisher weather station confirms a little moisture at negative temps.
Some light snow at perisher about 5pm was falling, stopped soon after. Fingers crossed for some more.
I saw it all from a distance. Very isolated showers of snow between 3pm and 6pm. Will post pics tomorrow.
5.8deg at the top in the middle of winter top of the kozi today Holy cow! That insane, I don't think I've seen it that warm in late July ever at the top. Got to 3deg last year in July but IIRC that was in early July. Thank god it wasn't raining
Frost this morning in Jindabyne and the cloud cover keeping it cool down here. Looks like the bulk of the moisture is to the West and North of the alps at this stage. Lets hope it stays that way until we get some cold air through later in the week.
Seems to be sliding down each side of the ranges...being split but check the radar for SA massive storms ...
Ditto, t-shirt weather here in Bondage. I also observe therer are too many prediction posts and not enough observation posts. IMO this is a consequence of a lack of snow.
pouring with rain SA...lightning and thunder... thats off the radar mind you I'm cold though...its only 13-14 degrees... in sydney
rain looks like it's just about to hit Buller and it's only 0.7C. A lot cooler than expected, but not quite cool enough methinks.
when it started raining here ( in Kew) my car temp said it was only 12C ( at about 4.30 ) I thought that was kind of encouraging. Dunno what it is now. Just spoke to the kids at Buller - very light misty stuff only at the moment.
I observe that Thredbo/Perisher might get very lucky and miss most of this rain band(Unless it is because the radar doesn't work that well in the mountains)
IR Satellite loop Water Vapour Loop Not a bad loops of what's going on currently. First band of rain / clouds heading south, almost SSW, next band coming in from the NW over SA/NSW border.
I don't get it, wasn't it supposed to be well above 0? at 10 pm its 0 at the top of Perisher and 0.7 degrees at the top of the V8. Looks like the top half could be getting some flakes tonight
Would you say accumulating sago or just holding steady? This of course rules out snow at the VIC resorts and everywhere but the top of Thredblow and Perisher.
Interesting..though i've seen similar strange snowfalls off North- Nor-easterly winds I gotta say it ain't been warm in NSW with this tropical moisture today..
Yeah I observe it has reached the 6ish degrees in Jindabyne which usually equates to snow above around 1700m and the temps at the top are nearly in line. Has stopped raining here though.
That rain is on its way out to sea now... be prepared for some from the west tommorrow...that might be a bit ugly.. one thing though...the temps are pretty coolish all over...well cooler than I expected...must have been the cloud over the whole continent preventing any warming....and subsequent heat been drawn down with the strong northerlies
Interesting to see that the BOM have gone for 'possibly falling as snow above 1800m' in this morning's forecast for today and tomorrow, even they are unsure as to what will happen! HOwever, with max temps of +3 at the top of Thredbo (1950m) you would think it would be rain? Or maybe colder than usual upper atmosphere will help the snow fall?
30+ mm of rain here in the Southern Highlands last night, thank god that didnt reach the mountains! Am packing the car and heading for Thredbo tonight thru sunday
Looking at Thredbo, almost 6mm of drizzle, I can see some rot starting on the cams, basin looking sad, manmade base looking solid. This month 151.6mm, last year 54.4mm. Must have all been snow last year. Bring on that cold change. IMO.
I hope I am not speaking to soon but it looks like the large amount of rain predicted will not happen, although there is a NW moisture band heading towards the mountains at the moment (but not that heavy). Only 2mm at Thredbo ATM and if this stays below 10 or 20mm there should not be much damage. Mt Willian is under 4C and Mt Lofty below 10c so hopefully this means snow a bit earlier than predicted. At least giving some hope for a turn around on the weekend.
Decent showers passing through Wagga at the moment so i'd say the mountains will cop a bit later this afternoon.
On site right now at Smiggins. Overcast but no signs of any rain. Temp in the car as we pulled in was 6 degrees (& it's usually pretty accurate) Hardy a breath of wind. Damn near tropical.
It'll be a tad longer than an hour by the looks of the radar..... 3 - 4 would be my guess..... Not seeing much more than 5 mm in it either as it will pass pretty quickly.
Temps @ Smiggs feel to have dropped a bit. Very light drizzle..... more a mist than anything I'd say.
-0.1 at the top of Thredders, cool but not cold in Jindy... but i see stars, and theres nothing on the radar
Started snowing at CP at around 6 pm for a few hours. Dusting on exposed grass.Have held up well today so fingers crossed no real loss for the predicted snow ahead.
was dry at Buller all day yesterday, 1C on the clocktower when I arrived at 7.00p.m. last night. Foggy now and the wind is picking up but still no moisture. I have cleared my diary on Monday and will be hanging around.
