Ok .... Pukage now @ smiggs.
Looks like really good accumulation on Thredbo village cam. Solid green on the radar from Mt Gambier to the mountains. IMO thats 12 hrs of snow at this rate so probably 25cm+ from now till 10pm, then more to continue tomorrow.
Another indicator is Mt William at 17mm. Mountains usually get double what Mt William gets.
I'm off to pack the car!
observe dumpage starting on baw baw
Down at Falls Express - big flakes, small flakes, sleet, rain all mixed in one and blardy windy. Good day to sit inside and watch the snow. Should be some great accumulation up top.
I observe wet conditions in Jindy. It should be snowing nicely above about 1200m now
Wettest place in Aus last hour was Perisher with 5mm at -2
A little accumulation starting on the Village Square Cam (will update)
so what are we reckoning as a rate? 2cm/p/hr? more?
I reckon we are looking at least 24 hours from now duration...
going off the radar..
Starting to accumulate in Thredbo Village at the moment. And by the looks of Yarrawonga, it's going to be doing this for a while!
Woke to about 4cm at Dinner Plain this morning, probably just over double that at Hotham. Made everything look much nicer.
Been riding heavenly early and it is not too crowded, especially for a Sunday... but I have never seen the base to thin before. Been snowing most of the morning, but it has really started to come down now.
Hoping the wind doesn't get too strong and lightning stays away otherwise this will be an expensive morning. Haha.
Looking forward to tomorrow as well, going to make sure I am there for first tracks.
Lodge report from Apira at Buller over phone.
Wet snow under skiis this morning.
So yeah sounds like what we got so far is a little damp.
But noting a comfy -2.3C now, good.
I'm observing a huge band of moisture heading straight for the mountains,
That band has been hitting them for the last hour or so
Down to -3.1C at Buller
Date / Time 01/11:05am
Temperature -3.1 C
Apparent Temp -7.6 C
Dew Point -3.4 C
Relative Humidity 98 %
Wind Direction WSW
Nautical Wind Speed 6 kt
Nautical Wind Gust 12 kt
Rain Since 9am 2.2 mm
Buller VS cam shows it banging down thick white now.
Always a good sign of dumpage....the Thredbo FF cam currently showing plenty of accumulation in the trees
Steady pukage at Falls Creek for the last...oh, say hour?
Nice flakes, very windblown.
10cm with drifts up to 20cm since it began snowing this morning.
All home trails and roads well covered!
pressure still dropping at Thredbo, me thinks its only going to get heavier...
We observed utter carnage on the Jindy - pb road..... Simply could not belive the stupidity being shown.
Dumping & people were treating the road like a racetrack.
I observe water vapour is excellent over VIC and in the trail of the front on the mountains at the moment. Good signs.
Hailing pretty hard in Armadale.
Very heavy snow at Falls over the last 30mins.
Nice cells building up in the band.
Wind has died off which is good.
Looks like 15-20cm or so already, drifts of up to 25cm easily.
More to come.
about the same amounts at Hotham. Snow so far has been quite wet and heavy but temps are starting to drop now, so this should improve!
I observe the PB "ski phone" reports "sensational at Guthega, 5+ cms and dumping" " the wind has died off" ....
Looking at some of the AWS data the dew points are moving off a little bit, which should result in drier snow, along with dropping air temps.
Just went for a walk through Perisher Lodges (behind the man),
40cm in Drifts
20cm in lee areas
10-15 cm in more exposed areas
and its still snowing heavily!!
...and its only at the half way mark OuterLimits!
I observe NSW may come out on the top from this...look to be doing very well.
easy 15cm+ down at the bottom of village chair at Hotham, no doubt more up top. Very steady snowfall all morning. Hardly any people about and fresh tracks here and there. Feels to be getting colder
I observe my PB ski phone saying "should be a metre in this by the end of the week" & "try for early next week"
That sounds awesome! I have been looking at the BOM gauge at hotham and it is only reading 4.2mm of precip so was thinking they might not be getting that much but sounds like they are doing well
It is looking like the best of it is on the way this afternoon and evening. Perisher AWS showing 19mm of Precip which should be around 15 - 20cm. Will get drier as well so a good result by tomorrow.
Would like to see the follow up on Wednesday.
It'll be because its windy, the majority of snow wont be collecting in the gauge
Yeah that seems a good explanation! Where is the gauge at Hotham anyway? bottom of summit?
Just had a call from my mate who is out teaching at Perisher and he says it is puking down and the riding us sweet, but tomorrow will be even better.
Hi. Just got to our place at falls. On a mobile device so can't link photos from web buit let me just say it is magical. Chains req to get up passed a fallen tree. Easy 25cm already aince 9am. Still snowing heavily with littyle wind on village side. It is quite dry snow. Nice big flakes. Temp -1 in village. 2mo will powder day if we get the cold air mixing in. Puting the kids in ski school and heading out 1st thing. Will try to update each night.
Thredbo claiming 35cms on their website.
rock in the foreground...here yesterday
gone tomorrow (and today)
thats what everybody's talkin bout.
i observe the radar looks promising for heaps more. still coming from that WNW direction that seems to make for great totals in NSW.
And who are we to argue with Thredbo
It was raining till about 4am and the mountain had taken a beating. But now it's dumping down at buller... should get 25+ today
fascinating that its 19 degrees at Bega
lightly snowing at my place now (Gordon, Vic...melb side og Ballarat)
Is that about 600 amsl?
PICS mick PICS!
i flew home from nz last night (was awsome IMO) however its now 26.1degrees outside, 38 percent humidity and hardly a cloud in the sky. I observe all us gold coasters are jealous of all you lucky peepsIMO- well if the last post is correct - above 600m amls.
yep downsloping foehn wind http://www.bom.gov.au/lam/glossary/fpagegl.shtml .I remember looking at moving to the south coast from Newcastle once and everyone here said 'why would you want to move to the south coast it's so cold " ha at least it isn't dreary and raining all winter and its close to the snow .A few years ago we left Perisher in a blizzard and were swimming in Bermagui a few hours later
Yeah mate its like that in the gong as well
I'll go on record that I've never seen a bigger dump in such "benign" conditions on the coast..
though lookin at the radar and sat map its coming
also reports of sleet in the higher Canberra suburbs
Front hitting coast at Ulladulla now - east of Canberra. You can see the main cloud approaching from the west over the escarpment with shrouds of misty streaks as precipitation is blown in. Nice effect too with warm sun and cold light rain drops that fall a bit like snow. This is being blown about with the sun shining through it all, and a Sea Eagle just flew by.
Hailing where I am in Melbourne's east now.
Just started snowing down in Jindy
