Is anyone aware of car rental companies that will fit ski racks to travel from Canberra airport? I’m trying the online thing and none of the majors appear to have ski racks in the ‘options’ part of their booking form.
We are needing to get 5 or 6 guys to Perisher and room will be tight!
    thanks in anticipation.

Most rental cars aren't allowed in the National Park.

Whoops. We’ve been renting from Canberra for the past three years and didn’t know that was a thing. Always told them we were going to the snow.

This is correct. The rental companies that allow entry past the NP gates also charge extra for “snow insurance” .......... about $40 per day on top of the rental fee. Europcar is one such company. Don’t know who offers racks these days, been some years since we visited NSW ski resorts and rented car out of Canberra. If you have no luck with rental racks, you could take a set of soft racks with you and fit yourself (after leaving the airport as they probably wouldn’t like you using them?)

The snow insurance thingy is what we’ve been paying. I’ll try talking to a real person- May have more luck!

Soft racks are good, we got given (loaned) a set for free from Monster in Jindy last year with our hire skis - carried four sets of skis & poles no problem. I don't know where you'd get them in Canberra.

A bit tricky flying into Canberra. Time in the car is less time on the snow!

Buy them before travel to Canberra. Can get them from surf shops, car accessory shops, camping/outdoor shops. Put them inside luggage, pull em out and use em. Easy Pesy.

The main differences are around the thickness and length of the foam on top of the roof where you put surfboards, skis etc etc. 5-6 people, so 5 or 6 sets of skis/snowboards in bags? The amount you are putting on the racks would determine the model style required. I’d suggest working out your requirements then having a look in the shops. Eg If your putting 5-6 skis/boards on top, then higher the better for foam and full width across car roof.
Examples: this style is for surfboards, notice these don’t go full width.

where as this style below is full width and has more height in foam.

Looks perfect. Have you ever heard of any issues with skis or the whole assembly coming off? It’ll be holding three sets of skis .

Get an 8 or 12 seater van and throw 'em inside.

Yep honestly you're best off talking to someone.

Just make sure you check the tyre pressure before you head out, I've witnessed people over-inflating rental car tyres before which can be very dangerous.
