You forgot to include the RMB CEO as well. Oh i forgot he's too busy enjoying his fully funded accomadation on the hill so he doesn't have to drive up from Mansfield each day in winter.

Why is this even an issue?
Hotham have it right, Falls have a reasonable compromise, so why not just copy the best bits of both?
Numberplate recognition via camera for anyone who buys online.
Gate to buy passes for numpties who can't work out the online thing - off to the side of the main road as much as possible.
Regular skiers get straight through, newbies get the personal touch if they need it.

Even Baw Baw has this sorted out. Buller RMB should be embarrased.

If nothing else the road needs two lanes - one for season passholders and online pre-purchasers, and another for those who need to buy.

SP holders who can drive straight through aren't very appreciative of an hour's wait for no reason.

Previous season the RMB allowed gate entry passes to be purchased at other places like Buller Sports in Mansfield and some other places owned by BSL so many bought gate passes at other places with ski hire etc at the same time and didnt have to stop at the gate.

If you dont have a pass on the dash when you drive up top you wont get past parking controllers up there so there is no need to stop at the gate.
Only those who got to the gate without a pass had to stop there.

So they decided to end that and now you can only get passes at the gate including passes you book on line regardless of the mayhem it would cause.

They did that because RMB can't be bothered calling ticket sellers at other locations on days its full to tell them to stop selling passes, which they would only have to ever do a few times a year.

This issue deserves a letter to the secretaries of Fed and State ministers for tourism, planning and environment.. (DSE appoints the RMB)

And by using this issue alone if there is some result it may provide or create a line of communication in future to deal with other RMB issues that need venting to a level of Govt that has the call over the RMB.

Mmm let me think what RMB has spent capital monies on in the past few years

    1. Upgrading RMBs offices
    2. Renovating the day centre
    3. Heating walk ways including the one outside RMB's own lodge
    4. Artwork for the village
    5. Signage
    etc

I would have thought these monies could have been better spent elsewhere.

Interesting that RMB are seeking government funding for the alternate access road via corn hill. I would have thought this could be better spent sorting out the gate issue and a second lane at Mirrambah.

They also need to get a move on building a few multi storey car parks (one at horse hill and one in village) to resolve the shortage of car parks on the hill. By building the one in the village it will free up all the Carparks between CSIR and Tip Corner that day trippers and overnighters could use.

    Rage inducing.

It is going to be interesting to see visitor numbers at the end of the season.

My bet they will be through the roof.

It will be another busy weekend this one as well with the Interschool Cross Country on this weekend at Buller. Apparently accommodation is sold out on mountain, Merrijig and Mansfield. The nearest place you can get any is Yea.

All they need to do is change the existing gate allocations.

They have 2 gates with cashiers to the right and one for season pass holders on the left that season pass holders cant get to anyway if there is a line at the cashiers only 15 or so cars back.
There is no need for the season pass holders to go through the gate because parking control up top checks the parking permits on the windscreen or dash anyway, or should.

The cashier lanes need to move to the left most lane where the season pass holders go now.
The middle lane left as a cashier.
The right hand window for collection of online passes sold only.

Season passs holders drive past the gate and line of cars on the right hand side on the road and dont need to stop.
The next fastest group are those collecting online passes that are just scan and print and they can get past the line of cars to the right hand side as well to get in an out without being blocked by those going to the cashiers on the left hand lanes who are the slowest.

Because we pass on the right hand side on this country the order of exits on and off the roadway need to be the faster ones to the right and the slower ones to the left.
Season pass holders are the fastest so they use the farthest right lanes and no gate.
Online passes go to the right hand gate of the three gates.
Cash passes are the slowest so they go to the far left on the slow lanes.

If they do that then the result is it will give people incentive to have a season pass because they can always pass the slower cars getting online and cash passes.
And likewise gives people inventive to order online because they can also pass others at the gate who are slower getting cash or card passes.

Cash or card ensures you go through the slowest, ordering online ensures you get through faster at the gate so more will do it and season pass ensures you will get past everyone else without a season pass at the gate increasing its value to people.
If they get more online buyers they can have one cashier lane only to the left and the other 2 gates to the right for online passes only and increase the incentive to get the passes online and not pay at the gate.

Check week 7 figures. Buller had 100% increase on the same period last year and is also 100% up on the average.

Great figures, Buller's track so much more closely to how good the snow is where Hotham and Falls are much more consistent with not as large spikes and troughs, 33,000 is pretty massive numbers by the look of it. It seems one positive is that the resort can cope with the massive numbers when everyone is up there and the whole mountain open it is just getting everyone up there in the first place that's the problem.

notice the visitor days are down on last year and only up 5% on the 10 year average,
yet the numbers are up, more people are day visitors. Getting cars through the gate
faster will only move the issue up to the parking end. And the line will be long in sometimes
snow covered road conditions, and stopping on a step road in covered in snow in breaking
one of the first rules of driving in snow, 'don't stop'. This happened on Friday night, just passed
tip corner, and ended up with about 7-8 cars all over the road, blocked in both directions.
Shortly after, 4wd vehicles had to fit chains.

The gate entry is just one part of a much larger problem.

I have a 10 year plan that I'm working on, yes 10 years is a long time, once I have more
details, maps models etc I will share here. I'm currently 2 years into it.

That doesn't surprise me with visitor days as there hasn't been a huge increase in beds on the mountain in the past 10 years.

Both RMB and BSL need to get better at marketing a 3 to 4 day product to people to extend there stays past the 2 day weekend warrior.

The crux of it is also that Buller is pulling in a minimum of double if not three times the cash of Falls/Hotham on those numbers surely? So they should have the money to implement a system that works!

Not if you're using the excess profit to line your own pockets or for your own benefit. (See previous post about how RMB spent monies in previous years.)
Looks like I need to try to get on the RMB board. =P

Looking forward to seeing it :)

You are 100% right though...for the number of cars which enter Mt Buller over the few hours in the morning there is going to be a traffic jam no matter what. If there was number plate recognition or a tag there will be a traffic jam getting a car park which as you say would probably be worse on bad weather days (unless of course underground multilevel car park was built as per the master plan..($$!).

On really busy weekend days at Mt Buller there are only a couple of solutions. Get heaps of buses and get everyone to go up in efficient shuttles...and/or build a gondola. Unfortunately given our inconsistent snow the Gondola will probably be a little too expensive although it could be an all year round tourist attraction if done correctly. Even if a Gondola is built however, realistically how many people can it move per hour? Will it save the traffic jams?

Midweek we had a long line at rhe gate due to this crap.
Previous years we had passes sold at other locations we never had a long line midweek nor a line at the carpark and the reason for that is becuase with people buying passes at other outlets it diffuses the crowding at the gate, making them all stop at the gate and crowd at the gate causes a crowd of people up top anytime as they all peel out of the gate at a constant busy rate.
Thats what happens when you have a choke point like the gate is now.
