From a snow hydrology p.o.v., it's not looking flash through the central Andes, where the length of the snow season has been declining since the year 2000.

As @Zeroz says, inter-annual variability plays a role too, though not as much as in NZ.

As stated by others, it seems apparent that there is some massive variation in the snowfall in Chile. This video is from this season:

My friend and fellow DPS rep Claudio Inglesias runs the Heli Skiing operation in Valle Navado. From what I've seen on his FB posts they're having a decent season.

    Nope, it's been very poor.
Only 114cm in total has fallen this season thus far at VN.

Yeah, I know a few snow/ice scientists over there. Sounding grim. Water issues likely to be severely compounded.

Currently looking like worst drought in 50 years.
Plans for 26 new water reservoirs are on the governments public works agenda at a cost of 6.5 billion US dollars.
    Water is a major issue!!!

Precipitation in the central Andes is strongly seasonal (winter dominated) which doesn't help.

Add to that Chile is also the largest copper producing country in the world producing 28% of all copper. Copper mining sucks up vast amounts of water (379,000 litres of water per ton of copper). Chile produced 5.8 million tons of copper last year............that's a sh@t load of water!!!!!! With not enough fresh water for mining, mining companies have had to build desalination plants in cooperation with local governments and have now broadly increased their use of sea water in the mining of copper.

It’s an awful season. El Colorado is shutting this week which is very early. I was there August 11th-16th skiing VN, La Parva and El Colorado. Smashed some big holes in my skis. VN might have looked better but realistically was ribbons of skiable snow with lots of rocks/ground around. Probably 50% of runs open and some of those were sketchy as. Was going to Heli and Cat but just wasn’t worth it. Snow has been much better in the lakes and Resorts in middle/southern Chile with decent powder dumps. I would definitely book last minute for Chile but didn’t have a choice this year as was with other people. Still was great trip just did more red wine, pisco sour and long lunches in the sun rather than first to last lift skiing

Such a shame the south of the country can't get it's act together with some more skiing. Those west coast mountains get a hammering.

One of the draglifts we got on I was halfway up translating what the lift guy said to me. I worked out it was something about broken...realised what it was we had to abandon lift 3/4 way up due to stream of water from melting snow and bare earth LOL
