Just watching a doco on ORF III which I do occasionally. They often have some quite good alpine based ones, telling stories of life in mountain villages. Currently one on Filzmoos. Of course week they are showing a few relating to Kitzbühel with the lead up to the races on the weekend and also on Austrian ski legends Karl Schranz and Petra Kronberger. Showing the film Streif on Thursday night if you are interested.

Also note that Kitzbühel is just 2 hours away from Landeck. What are you doing on Saturday?

Well I’m trying to get my head around what happened today. First up I made it safely to St Anton without issue. This place is ginormous. So much terrain.

It started off pretty cold , -15C or so. The snow was really grabby. Offpiste was anything from blower powder, rock hard, to sand like and everything in between.

Did I mention it was cold? Desperate measures were needed. What would @Astro66 do ???

There was a bit of cloud about but once you got on top of it it was much better.

This place is enormous. I believe it’s the biggest ski resort in Austria and that’s saying something. Most of the good looking offpiste had been heavily smashed, though I did venture off the beaten track a few times.

Eventually I made it into Lech.

I tried to reverse course to go back to Zurs. However there was one issue, on one lift there was no return piste.

I skied back down into Lech and went into the Information Centre. The young lady said it was doubtful I’d be able to ski back to St Anton as it was too late, but the bus back was leaving in 1 minutes time 50m down the road. I bolted out the door and ran down the road in full ski gear to be the last person to jump on.

Once back in St Anton it was back up to Rendl to finish off.

    Here’s something I haven’t done in a while, 10k vms.

    So quite a day.

That is a fair effort. The few days I've had at St Anton I have never made it over to Lech.

Tomorrow. I'm halfway through this trip, wasn't feeling 100% so taking a non-scheduled rest day today.

Also my Utah skiing buddy is taking the week off next week. Need to be in fit shape for that too.

Rest days are important - both physically and psychologically. They help maintain the passion.
Meanwhile back here in Qld, its 35 degrees, hasn't been below 25 for a couple of nights and the humidity is so high you break into a sweat going to the toilet!

 Want to be in good condition to enjoy the Apres beers in Ischgl. Can't miss that.
Kuhstall is the most famous one but there are lots of others.
It is a crazy place, but the skiing is great also once you get past the bottleneck at the bottom and away from the madness at Idalp.

I recognise that view also. :)
Your balcony is on the same side as the one I had.

    This was my view.

    Ischgl, fun, fun, fun.

Day started off in beautiful bluebird conditions.

I headed across to the Switzerland border. Hmmm not many people have come this way.

Apparently black 81 isn’t used by many people. :)

Had lunch and stopped in Switzerland.

The Swiss know a thing or two about lifts.

    Conditions were great all day.

One thing that had been annoying me all trip was that I left my pocket knife back in Oz. That issue has been resolved, along with some duty free chocolate.

Some place where people party ;)

Yep, Ischgl is a lot of fun.

There was a bit of a queue getting tickets, but with so much lifting infrastructure you basically go through the RFID gates, jump on a lift and head up.

Getting to St Anton I caught the train. Direct from Landeck to St Anton.
Getting to Ischgl it's bus, bus or bus. ;)

The morning queue for the Silvrettabahn did scare me at first, but with 18 seater gondolas it does move quickly. Idalp is a bit chaotic with people and lifts going in all directions but once away from there lots of space.
The cable car in Samaun is interesting - 2 entrances to to lift which take you to different levels in a double decker cable car.
Did you ride the A2 gondola? I had a couple of afternoon runs down to Velillialp and rode a massive 28 seat gondola on my own - luxury.

I know you are moving around a bit #DidSurfNowSki, so I thought I might give you a heads up about going off-piste when you are not supposed to in some resorts. Ski patrol are getting serious about such infringements these days:

Weather looks good, at least in Kitzbühel a bit to the east for the downhill training.
Should be able to cover plenty of terrain in Ischgl/Samnaun.
    Have a Weissbier to finish.

Well that was a fun loop of Ischgl and Samnaun. There are 3 ‘smugglers’ circuits here: gold, silver and bronze in tribute to the smuggling that used to occur between Switzerland and Austria.

As usual, I found that the route wasn’t totally signposted and I relied heavily on my map and course notes. Again, where is @skifree when you need him. He would have had every waypoint mapped out months ago ;)

It was a glorious day to do this.

Here’s another picture of the double decker tram coming out of Samnaun.

At lunch I rechecked my map. Extra care was needed so as not to spill beer all over it.

Yes, a most glorious day indeed.

    Here’s the route I took.

Tomorrow night I need to be in Munich. Might check out Kappl if the people here will let me store my bag during the morning.

Damn you @DidSurfNowSki. This Euro leg of yours has thrown my plans out big time. I had a full lock on taking my family to Canada next Christmas/January and now............................
I think I'm going to fly into Zurich and spend a week over Christmas in Landeck and surrounds before moving south for a few days in the Dollies. I'll then drive to France for a week there before moving somewhere in Switzerland and then fly back out of Zurich.
Bizarrely flights are much cheaper in and out of Zurich from Brisbane compared to Vancouver too. About $800 per person.

Well skiing in Austria is done and dusted for this trip. This morning I skied Kappl to finish up on.

This place hosted the junior free riding event in Austria and you can see why, so much off piste potential.

Anyways, some random thoughts as I head back to Munich.
    • Ried and Landeck were great places as a base to ski the area.
    • The skiing was excellent but I wish there were more powder days, I seem to have missed out this time around. Maybe North America has some ;)
    • The resorts and the ski runs in them are huge
    • The lifting infrastructure is fantastic
    • Austrian food is wonderful
    • Austria is still the only place I could jump on the next plane to come back to for more skiing
    • Snow based activities are everywhere; skiing, skinning up hills, walking trails, tobogganing... they even allow snowboarding and telemarking
    • The ski buses are a bit of a mystery to me, most of the times they are free, other times the bus drivers give you the 3rd degree on paperwork and you get to pay unless you have a note signed by your mum
    • Ski buses are always full of skiers
    • How my skis never fell out of the baskets at the back of the ski bus is a wonder
    • They love dining outside here

Thanks for taking the time to read this trip report. Onto North America! :)
