Booked for the entire week apparently was able to get one booking for Thursday.
Lines today ...
There’s more than one place. Walk around all and book what you can.
I don’t know Rusutsu but it doesn’t look too bad to me for a public holiday. Thredbo lines are worse!
So today was a lot of fun. Fast groomers mainly and a few crusty tree bombs, but mainly clear skies and we had a bit of fun! SOme pics below.
Combini report daily now required.
Bit hard to see but line kept going for another 50 m or so ... wasnt so bad though as I mentioned earlier moved reasonably quickly. was an 8 min wait.
What’s that growing out of your head You should see a doc about that.
Have you tried Pirateman or the other Izakaya nearby?
A report on the new things to eat from 7-11 or seikomart.
A very oldskool gopro!
Yeah we did. Tried everything . Is crazy busy and we are clearly not up to speed with what u need to do. Tried 6 different places, all booked for the rest of the week except one where we got in on Thursday, pirateman I think?
Not great TBH
Embrace the combini lyfe
2 places we did not try. Will try them tomorrow.
I think that’s the one place we didn’t eat.
i hope not but possibly for good reason! Bit crappy though
Got into Rusutsu Sakaba tomorrow wooho !
Mountain much much quieter today! No lift lines . A dusting overnight, maybe 3-5 cm. Has made groomers better but some tree runs it just hides the crud underneath. That said, had a lovely run just then through the trees to the left of east mountain!
You still got a Blue Bird?
Its absolutley hammering down at Niseko on the web cam. Looks very nice!!
Yeah partial, very light snow fluries on and off, but mainly clear.
Get over to Hanazono.
Biggest change in the shortest period I've ever experienced.
Scraped groomers to dandruff shots (Head & Shoulders) in 3 hrs
Unfortunately we are going to kiroro tomorrow. Interesting to see if that got anything?
They dont really seem to do after ski here do they? Tea lounge where you can order a beer closes at 5pm, bar with cover charge not open at all and the English Pub "Cricket bar" doesnt open till 6pm!
I cant really drink beer very well cos of my operations, and very few places serve wine. Is that a normal Japan thing or is it just a "Zoo" thing?
Not a big Sake drinker! and nowhere open in resport to drink it anwyway!
We will go across the road to the Izakaya where we are having dinner.
Apres is not a real Japanese thing.
Niseko and Hakuba have the Apres thing dialled - because of the international market they attract.
I’m sitting in a bar with 50+ people drinking a variety of red wine, champagne, white wine, g and ts, my vodka lime soda, beers, and kids with soft drinks - and food also available.
Kiroro will be similar to the zoo.
Last few seasons there was a fondue igloo that had a decent range of drinks on the way out... maybe there.
It's a local thing for sure, which is unusual considering the amount of boozing you see going on in Cities.
The 7/11 on the road between the resorts sells Australian wine, or at least it did a few years ago.
It's more grab a few drinks and relax in your room before or after an Onsen. The Cricket bar was Ok though and the tiny Izakaya up the stairs near Pirate Man had a good 4:30 vibe going on.
The resort building you're in (with the giant animatronic tree etc) really, really needs an update. When we were there, there was a scale model of the proposed redevelopment and the black skivvy wearing architects were scoping out the redesign.
I was hoping they'd do something similar to the faux laneway they have at Chitose Airport.
Fair enough, figured it would likely be a Japanese thing. There is a tiny little container bar near the pirate, is that the one?
Not sure, it was up some metal stairs out the back of the main buildings, we stumbled on Pirate Man after a few whiskeys there. I'll try and dig up a photo / name.
Here it is, Rodeo Drive:
Don't be scared off by the dive bar exterior, it's even worse inside 2yr old daughter mid tickle attack.
Also, the Mongolian BBQ was really good. It's somewhere in the main complex.
Awesome!!! We tried to get in there for dinner but booked until end of week. May pop in for a drink after skiing on Thursday
Places that do apres:
- Nozawa Onsen
The normal way that Japanese do it:
- Come in about 3:30pm.
- Beer from vending machine
- Dinner in the hotel at exactly 6pm, finish exactly 7pm
- Get beer & Chuhai from vending machine, and snacks.
- Go back to room, and sit on the floor around the table and turn on the feet heater.
- Bring out the Uno cards, and play for 2 hours
- Go to bed at 9:30pm
Rusutsu seems to be a little unique in a number of ways though...
Wine is not big in Japan. Spirits and beer more popular.
Used to take wine from home.
Hey @elSpike your family seem very similar to the above!
Subscribed! Though we managed to get restaurant bookings
Go on Tokyo Snow Club or Tokyo Gaijins weekend snow bus tours. Long weekend, apres:
- Go to Japanese style resort.
- Bus tour does own tour party at night
- Drinking and dancing until 1am
Generally, a 3 day long weekend (like last weekend) will cost about 40,000yen.
- Bus from Tokyo and back
- 3 nights accom.
- 3 breakfasts, 2 dinners
- 2 lift tickets
The equivalent trip in AUS would be at least 120,000 yen.
Aaaah-just saw this!
Had a great day today-crowds down prob 70% on Sunday/Monday
Was probably 15cm fresh in the powder zone snowed all day
This is our 10th day so we were planning an Otaru cruise tomorrow-day off or maybe check out the Otaru cablecar field
@CarveMan -kids loving the skis
Otaru Tenguyama is great
@trappers you’re in the wrong country for snow.
Camels swap sand for snow as Saudi Arabian desert hit by winter storm
SO yesterday we headed off to Kiroro to try something different ... wow and how different was it?!
Smaller, but much more modern resort, and snow much better. Unfortunately they are still rpobably 1 m or more short of where they need to be to cover things properly, but we nevertheless found some good powder stashes in amongst the trees.
It is a funny place on-piste, with some steep stuff up the top but then long flat traverse out, lift system doesnt make a huge amount of sense as you are bored for half the run! Also one of the main lifts on the mountain left is out of action which takes out a huge amount of the resorts advanced terrain I'll repost this in the Kiroro thread.
Snowed most of the day there and we were treated to a magic drive home in the shadow of Mt Yotei
Had a great dinner at Rodeo Drive last night, got in thanks to a late cancelation
Rusutsu got no snow during the day nor overnight so Im taking a lazy morning and exploring this crazy weird resort hotel. THe german village in the middle, the talking tree, Daniel street ... I feel like I'm in the Shining!
So pretty shitty snow today. Nothing fresh overnight, and its all gone a bit hard and crusty. Nevertheless I decided to get some exercise so attempted to ski every single on piste double black, black, and most major reds on the East mountain.
I NEARLY achieved it, missing one very short double black, and a couple of reds, simply because tthey close the lifts out the back at 3:30pm and I only started at 12!!
Maybe it's just me but the photos aren't showing (other than the first one)
Hows that now?
I love Slopes. Those are some good numbers there @trappers Much respect!
would have been better but I started late and they closed the lifts! could easily have been an 8/45 km day if I had started early I reckon!
