Hello all, long time no post!
I last traveled to Niseko in 2001, and will be returning next February. I'm wondering if anyone knows if Ryu's Inn is still running, a small pension we stayed at a couple of times. I'm guessing Ryu and Eriko may have retired or moved on by now though! If anyone knows anything, or alternatively can recommend a similar small pension that provides more traditional food, hosting/guiding (especially to all the onsen!) it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, OH

Woah Niseko area has probably changed a lot since 2001. Thats several years before I started doing seasons there.

    I don't think Ryu's Inn exists anymore.
I think it was renamed to be Yu's Folly and ran accom/b&b for a while. I'm not sure, but now I think it's simply a realestate managed apartment type deal for people to rent the whole thing.
I dont have any specific places to recommend, but I still hear good feedback of plenty that are around in Higashiyama, Annipuri and several in Izumikyo. I doubt any exist in Hirafu tho, you won't even recognize Hirafu anymore.

The good news is that in the last 50 years they've only upgraded 1 lift, and replaced 1 lift (which is new this season). So at least you'll know the lift system. Much sad :(

You might have a look at Milky House, not Hirafu but Annupuri.

Don't recall that. But dinners were great and he drove me to a different onsen every night.

Thanks a lot for your reply and info. I hear the area has become more developed and 'the Bali of the north' for Australian visitors. Would you recommend any smaller/less developed ski destinations in Hokkaido?

Yep, know there's heaps but like to hear some real details behind the stats. If it wasn't for this forum I never would have thought of visiting Japan previously!

Don't even need Google. Plenty of threads and TR's highlight different areas in Japan in the forum.

IF only japan had more "ski in ski out" resorts, such a massive opportunity over there. Driving half an hour to an hour to resorts kind of sucks. Especially if you want to enjoy a few beers after.

There are actually a lot of them. Niseko, Rusutsu, Tomamu, Sahoro, Furano, Kiroro. All ski in/out options.. I think you would get bored though at a lot of the smaller hills. I love the ability to trip about to a lot of small hills.
