For those planning to go to Lake Mountain this weekend, Sunday will be by far the better day. Chains are likely to be required on both days. The snow on the toboggan run at the moment is only man-made and badly rain affected. That is, very wet. It's likely to start snowing either Saturday or Saturday night, so by Sunday, there should be a good cover.

For those planning to come up during the first week of the school holidays, later should be better than earlier. Snow is expected to continue falling on Monday and Tueday. By Thursday & Friday, the weather should be fine, chains are not likely to be needed, and there should be lots of snow on the ground.

Thanks teckel. Hoping to get up one day in the hols for a look around and act as the human chairlift while the kids toboggan.

The snow is now settling nicely on the mountain. It should be a good day tomorrow (Sunday); certainly very picturesque, but it's likely that snow chains will at least have to be carried for 2WD vehicles. The snow is already hanging in the trees, and there's a good cover on the ground.

5cm fresh snow since yesterday afternoon. Chains are required to be carried today (Sunday)

Had a couple of hours up there late this afternoon - snowing steadily at 3.15 when I arrived and accumulated a few cm then stopped again about 4.30. was on zero base down low but not too bad on higher trails. Very thin cover and washouts but quite skiable- they'd actually managed to do a bit of grooming this morning.

Started snowing steadily again when I left after after 5 and snow sticking on the road to after the Woods Point Rd junction. Rained all the way back to Healesville and quite cold - trying to sleet going over Dom Dom saddle. Coldstream guage is showing 6mm of rain between 5.30 and 6.30 and radar is looking like it will go on and off for some time to come. Could be OK by tomorrow.

Average snow depth across resort is now 20cm. Good fall of snow overnight. So it's looking good for the school holidays [IMG]

    It's still snowing now.

Their website report says no grooming has been done, strange.
Anyway, great news of some fresh stuff, now lets hope it gets topped up for the weekend (when I can actually go!)

20 to 25 cm on the trails at 11am and it's been snowing ever since [IMG]
I'm pretty sure they'll groom tonight.

What a great day it was today. Loads of snow, great weather, and crowds not too bad. What more could anyone ask for? [IMG]

Sorry, no photos from me - I didn't get up there. Just reports from returning customers, many of whom stayed up there until dusk because it was so good. But photos available at http://lakemountainresort.com.au/web-cams
2 are proper webcams, and the other 7 are photots taken daily on the trails.

Outlook for the next few days: Cold frosty nights and lovely sunny days. This will probably mean the snow will be very icy in the mornings softening to a wet slush in the afternoons. (Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses) By Wednesday, we should be under the influence of the next approaching weather system, and at this stage it looks like heavy rain on Wednesday. So on that basis, I wouldn't be planning a trip for Wednesday. On Thursday it should be colder and should snow instead of rain. If this changes, I'll update my forecast for Lake Mountain.

It will still be good to go up this weekend (bar the crowd). It was bitterly cold especially with the wind this morning. The ice on the trees stuck around all day long.

Snow did tend to thaw a little in the afternoon but not too much. It will be icy out there and I don't think we'll see much of an inversion.

The slug appeared to be in action too to ensure maximum availability of toboggan terrain.

In all, the snow up there seemed to be holding out a lot better than I expected.

When you see how much a single gun and a slug can pump out it makes you appreciate just how much snow the big resorts must make in a night.

The weather has changed, and unfortunately it doesn't look as though it will snow at least until the weekend. Most days this week it will rain rather than snow, but Thursday would still seem to be the pick of the week days, as it will probably be fine and not raining.

Chances of snow on the weekend seem to be improving, which is just as well, as the rain has done considerable damage. However, there is still quite enough snow for everyone in the meantime - just expect it to be very wet snow.

A scan through all the Victorian Resorts web cams, it appears Lake Mountain to be the only resort to have any snow for visitors to paly and toboggan on for the opening weekend. What are they doing that the other resorts aren't

my first visit to LM would have been in 73 or 74, packed onto "forms" in the back of a furniture truck. I had a homemade wooden toboggan which worked pretty well.

I don't know the approximate date. I never went there until this millennium, by which time the carpark was sealed. 6 figure phone number on that bus - I think it may be earlier than 74?
    Cool pics though!

Investment in All Weather Snow Making, the key to starting the season and maintaining the season, they just need the IDE machine to increase production.

After looking through the Victorian Cams i see the resorts have had a bit of a go at some stage overnight at making snow. What has caught my eye this morning is that on the Lake Mountain Village cam they seem to be still making snow when the other resorts are not. How can that be?

lake mountain don't aim to make the same quality of snow as the ski resorts. The granita they make can be made at higher temperatures. great for keeping the toboggan run open.
