Big cumulous heads out over northern beaches of Sydney. Looks like the Hunter is getting smashed again.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning across all of the southern half of Victoria. Rare you see that happen without the north copping it as well.

The big cumulus clouds I see out my window suggest otherwise.

It may not be as big as last night but there is a lot of moisture in an unstable atmosphere.

BOM have cancelled their Melbourne thunderstorm warning as of 4:33 LST.

Yeh, can see that in St Kilda, looks like it's sitting on inner NE or even E suburbs. Great looking thunderhead.

As I suspected, the activity's gone around Melbourne. Still a chance of something later.

Yeh, the seabreeze was always working against the storms in Melbourne today, IMO.

Newcastle was definately hit this arvo. Fine at 1.30, though some big clouds to the west, raining heavily with close thunder and lightning by 2.15 at Charlestown. Got caught up in heavy traffic and flooding near tourle rd. Took an extra half hour to get home from Charlestown to north of airport. Nothing much near williamtown until 4.30. I need to buy a new rain gauge as we left out old one in qld! Figured they might get more use out of it than us :)

Pipe dream at 288 hours... but I see how GFS is getting it. We've seen what happens when tropical moisture hits a cold front. Which is exactly what that chart is predicting... but a double centred low messes it up in my head.

My real concern is the airmass over Victoria... dry. Hot.

Both EC and GFS have settled on about 25-30mm for Melbourne through Saturday. Looks like the west and the NE ranges will get a fair bit more. After that a drier spell and potentially quite hot towards the end of next week.

Today's BOM Thunderstorm forecast has severe thunderstorms likely for most of the state.
We'll see, I suspect they will be scattered TS throughout the state, but I'd be surprised if we see anything like Wednesday.

    Hi Guys,
Victorian Water storage levels are now at 54~% and growing, no doubt by the time winter comes and seasonal winter rainfalls continue on from summer rainfalls, we may see closer to 100% water storage levels across Victorian dams. Is this a remote possibility to occur within the year?

Re: SE AUS Summer Weather: Heatwaves & Storms thread

Rain needs to fall in the Thomson catchment if we want to see any great increase in storage levels. We are more likely to see favourable systems for the Thomson catchment in winter (cold fronts as opposed to northerly systems) so hopefully we can get above 70% in the next winter.

Not a chance in hell. Melbourne catchments apart from Thompson are pretty much full. Thompson is a very slow filling dam, remember it's design intent is to drought proof Melbourne. It will take 5 years of good rain seasons for it to fill IMO, it's around 37% at the moment.

hmm cardinia is still a bit far off being full or close to 67% IIRC. Upper Yarra is also starting to empty a bit. not too sure if thats because the water is being consumed or pumped to cardinia.

Take Thomson out of the picture and Melbourne's dams are 80% full.

Rain gauge overflowed to the outer bucket, so we've had at least 26mm. Probably had more than 30.

Through the night I couldn't tell what was wind and what was rain. Very strong winds last night.

In weather news, I dont see much for the next few days, light winds and overcast mornings with sun in the arvo is the order. AXS not showing much later on, GFS going for more troughy weather in a week's time.

The weather in Victoria is as stable as it has been this summer. GFS has 5mm or less for the weekend, while EC showing it's pretty dry for the next 10 days.
BOM going for a few showers early next week, but no real heat.

I don't think the water tank has got less than 75% full at any time this summer!
Usually 5l petrol keeps the mower going all summer, I've almost used double that this year.

That's a lot SB. Ive got kings pride buffalo which is pretty thick and early summer when it had only been in for 6 months I was filling the catcher once per mow. Now i fill it 3-4 times per mow and im mowing it every week. There's a lot of weight in it too, I cant remember ever seeing grass grow this thick this fast all through summer.

4 degrees in Freeburgh on this beautiful green green Autuum morning. Daylight hrs now much shorter. Had to empty out the small tank again (12000 Lt), 3rd time this summer and the other 2 x 25k lt tanks still overflowing. Crazy.

Re: SE AUS Summer Weather: Heatwaves & Storms thread

The trick is not to catch and to mow more regularly. Without a catcher it's easy to scoot around. This means you get it done in half the time so can do it twice as often and therefore don't get clumps of clippings everywhere. If you catch the grass and it goes into the council green waste collection you are just exporting nutrients off your property.

Re: SE AUS Summer Weather: Heatwaves & Storms thread

With the type of grass I have and the rate that is it growing at the moment I have been advised to catch and remove. When the rate of growth slows down, or I mow more regularly (which would be 2-3 times a week at the moment) I could do it without catcher, but there is simply too much clipping for the type of grass I have.

A couple of the models showing a bit of rain for Melbourne for the weekend.
EC has around 15mm and GFS around 10mm. UKmet shows similar results.

GFS and EC starting to suggest some further activity later next week.

Re: SE AUS Summer Weather: Heatwaves & Storms thread

Do you guys reckon we will see this trend of the past 6 months continue into winter before a winter change, or are there still some hot day possibly ahead? Personally I cant see the hot days, but then again I see nothing that shows this pattern changing, if I had to make a prediction on winter I would say warm and wet with a couple of big snow systems but rain in between, a bit like 2005 but more moisture around.

I have 5 acres to mow! It only gets done about every 2 weeks as a consequence. But the weeds! I've never seen them like this year!
