Its because i wasnt there. Cheers for the invite
Stoked they are finally seeing the light and opening remarks before Coronet!
Haha wait till it's snowy you'll enjoy that more
Snowing on and off at my place.
You will have to move from Chilli to Mint in the garden now!!
As usual I'm watching from Qld. We will do a week or so on snow when it looks good in NZ but must save the bulk of our hols for Japow.
Carrots, Broadbeans, and brassicas arew slowly growing away. The chilli are still in the garden, Jalapenos arent dead yet but the Habaneros took a beating and died last week
13cm at my place so far. Stopped for now but a huge blob incoming on the rain radar!
Remarks calling 40-50cm so far, precip is forecast atleast until midnight!
3 weeks till the lifts start turning!
Snow in may...
It's encouraging for sure, but sea surface temperatures are similar to this time last year too...
Similar, but appear to be not as bad as 2016.
EDIT: Added some better images.
Yep, although extending further south. Time will tell!
Predection : Remarks will open on time with Curvey basin, Alta and Sugar chairs running.
Practised putting the chains on today.
It'll be a close run thing if there's going to be any natural to ride on that's for sure...
And Concrete will open with M1, Big Easy and Learners Area
Metservice is now forecasting snow lowering to 500m asl on Saturday so maybe Dumph will have the last laugh...
Yeah starting to look up
Nice pic I saw today
Haha, was looking at Cardrona from across the valley on Sunday, below the extent of that pic things were not looking so pretty.
Have been up at Oamaru airport(!) this morning. The Kakanui and St Mary ranges are certainly looking in better shape than their inland and eastern brethren. MODIS imagery is highlighting the relative lack of snow on inland ranges and the main divide compared to the (generally) eastern ranges so far pretty nicely. We just haven't been getting the usual precip from the w/we so far. Lake levels are reflecting this.
Maybe it'll be a year for Awakino and central/east otago touring.
Very impressive proverbial start to the season 'thin white ribbon of death'
Ballsy drone flying... no reg's breached, I'm sure...
Opening on Saturday apparently... will be a thin white ribbon indeed!
Pretty much right in the flight path for approaches on Runway 23 for flights from Australia, Auckland and probably even christchurch.
You got it. Infact, the Cardrona Saddle approach is just south of the ski and is a preferred option for VFR as they can cross the saddle below the controlled airspace above, and light aircraft will often cross the saddle right on 500 ft, this drone wouldn't have been far off that level.
This is from the CAA AIP Service. The RNP Approach for 23 with Cardrona's approximate location marked X.
Off topic - but topical. Where can I test my new touring setup near Christchurch and do a couple of turns . I've been told to go to Cheeseman and Temple, but how do you know where to go.... Not that keen to spend $95 on hutt...
Hit up the Canterbury Ski Touring group on FB.
But my money would be on Tarn Basin from Cheeseman yeah.
or have a look here http://skitouring.co.nz/
Cheeseman looks great for it. They have a photo of people skinning at the top of their website! Broken River too.
I see Mt Hutt has the first avalanche forecast out for the season.
Technically no, There was a special forecast issued back in april or march when there was a huge early season snow fall and everyone was getting after it!
Well apparently they didnt make enough snow to get sugar running.
I flagged it as im not a huge fan of WROD with moving trees.
This coming week is looking like some natural finally.
First real day of the season tomorrow?
Nah. Didnt deliver bugger all. I wouldnt be heading offpiste anywhere yet...
Valley View at Cardrona is set to open this week for anyone interested.
Was looking pretty scratchy from across the valley at the weekend.
Man-made on trail only maybe?
Yeah, that's what I am thinking. The Quad would be servicing Lower Gold rush Downhill only.
if you can find anything else in the southern lakes currently you have either a helicopter or a total lack of respect for your base.
Greengates Express is now open at CP as well. On piste isn't looking too shabby, but we could really do with a dump to open up the offpiste.
That speaks volumes about their snowmaking capacity and ability
That's not even the worst of it Heinz, apparently there's nothing in The Saddle either.
Cardrona opening all lifts from tomorrow
To me, it still looks better than last year on the webcams.
I cant recall the actual opening date last season?? I can see it was open for 93 days last year.
It needs to open soon!
Not bad cover considering this must be mostly man made?
Haha they're at it again eh.
Hope TC can profit from the NW storm as it usually does deliver for them
Although it looks a bit warm. Snow forecast is liking it for mid and upper mountain.
Showing 30+ cm for tomorrow.
If TC doesnt open for school holidays they most likely wont open at all...
I flew up to there last week to pick up an airways staff member, turns out the RNP comms is actually all that radio equipment directly above the whitestar unload...
