Selwyn Snow Resort has suffered extensive damage as a result of the recent fires. We are working closely with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and relevant agencies to arrange access to the resort, so we can fully assess the damage that has occurred.

The safety of our staff is our highest priority, with all staff safely evacuated before the fire reached Selwyn Snow Resort.

While we know the Selwyn community will be saddened by this news, it is important to remember that the fire situation is still active in the wider region.

We will update you with further information about the resort in the coming days.

    #########

Hopefully all is well and can be recovered asap.

It's a bit of a wait-and-see in terms of how much damage has been sustained, and what the prospects are in terms of operations this season. The saving grace is that there isn't any accommodation for visitors on-site, so hopefully that means less to repair/rebuild, improving the prospects.

As I said in another thread, I have a reasonable quantity of gear in good condition I can donate to a burnt out ski hire - mainly clothing and a few beginner snowboards & boots. I do hope they manage to get going for this winter.

Knowing the area well, I would say they lost most of their lodges and main building as it was close to the trees. As for the ski hire, it's a separate building which may have survived.

They could reopen for this year of they brought in a few demountable buildings but I can't see it happening.

Will wait for the updated news.

I'm really sad about the Selwyn situation - pretty much cried on the news. We don't really know the full details but it completely sucks. It was a place that made skiing doable for myself and the two telejoeys. We've got season passes for 2020, accommodation locked in and new skis arrived for the telejoeys for Xmas. Can't really say what we'll do now, still too much of an information vacuum. I understand we haven't lost our house or anything as bad as that, but I just know this will most likely put a big dent in the ski plans for this year and that's the hardest thing as a parent - something great you planned for your kids (most likely) not gonna happen. Probably like others here, the mind had already drawn a line under season 2019 and thoughts drifting towards season 2020, thinking well hey, might only be five months or so and we could be back on the snow.

Best case scenario is the lift and snow making infrastructure is mostly OK, they can replace at least one snow groomer (machine) in time (maybe bring one in from Charlottes Pass, which is owned by the same bloke). I think it's safe to assume the resort building, staff accommodation and maintenance shed and ski patrol gear are all gone. Under this scenario maybe, just maybe the resort could be made operational, maybe running from dongas or something in the carpark. But that's best case scenario. Obviously lots of potential for it to be worse than this, not to mention the bureaucratic rigmarole associated with any longer term rebuilding. For the local economy of Adaminaby and on the western side, having the resort closed for a season would be a massive financial hole. Just relieved though for the bloke who lives there full time - lost his home but still alive.

Well there was a post on the bushfire thread about a rumour "they" (ie current owner Kevin Blyton) might not rebuild. Sadly you'd have to imagine that is a distinct possibility. If lift infrastructure is stuffed, I reckon rebuilding would be a $10-20 million job. And who'd risk that much money given the snow reliability these days. Selwyn definitely targeted the budget/beginner end of the snow sports spectrum but also worked for us as a snow-mad family who wanted to avoid the crowds, pressure and $$$ of the big resorts. It also worked for the nearby Riverina rural crowd, with plenty coming from nearby towns west of the Snowies. That would be a tragedy - I know it was run as a private business, but the reality was a business that brought so much happiness to so many people.

I'm so sad to hear about the damage to Selwyn, it's heartbreaking. I keep refreshing every social media site to see if there are any updates on the extent of the damage but I guess I just have to be patient until it is safe enough for them to get a crew in there to assess the damage.

The upside of course is that all the staff were evacuated before the fire came through, so that is a relief.

I really do hope against all odds that they are able to re-build and open for 2020 season.

Yes. I was the one who heard that rumour.

Def be a sad day for Australian skiing if they never open again.

I am aware of a family friend going to Cabra tomorrow hopefully news then. Not sure if he will be escorted in (works at the power station) and therefore won’t be able to divert. Or will be waved through and can divert.

Very sad news, hopefully they will be up and running for 2020 season and damage is not as extensive, however things are not looking good based on current reports.

Also appears from various sources that Kiandra Courthouse has been damaged or destroyed. If that is correct birthplace of Australian Skiing gone:(

If I were a business that relied on the winter tourist trade from Selwyn in surrounding towns, including Cooma, I would be rallying the troops and politicians to get help Selwyn get back into operations.
I believe it is a private business (with other interests in the area - SnowFM and Charlotte's Pass????) and the financial rewards may simply not be there if the repairs are going to be expensive. We went through such a dilemma after the 2013 floods up here in Qld.
The local community benefits massively from Selwyn. So too the ski industry in general as Selwyn is an important seeding ground. Many direct and indirect jobs and lifestyles depend On Selwyn and without it I fear for accommodation providers, food outlets, ski hire retailers, medical practices and so on throughout the local area.
This needs to be a community wide and industry wide effort. Is Selwyn worth saving. I believe so.

I've just cleaned the house of the local ash inflow from Saturday night, and was busy drafting a letter in my mind to Michael McCormack - Deputy PM and member for the Riverina. Going to write it as next task, basically stating:

Selwyn was such an important place for the Snowy Mountains, especially those towns west of the ranges. I've sat on the chairlift with many of Mr McCormacks constituents from Wagga etc. Been there when local primary schools have been up there running their learn to ski classes for the kids.

Whilst I understand it is private business, as stated above, it was a facility that brought so much happiness to the local community.

If ever there was a task for the ADF engineers to help with (and noting NZ are sending a crew of NZ army engineers), getting Selwyn functioning again for the 2020 ski season would have to be up there (at least in terms of building short term 1-2 year temporary facilities whilst a longer term, more formal rebuild occurs) as a massive win for the community of the Riverina and Monaro. Fark me, if they can build bases in Afghanistan, they can surely knock up some temporary staff accommodation and bare bones resort facilities and help to get the lift infrastructure running again within 5 months. Time to get writing...

Edit: Done, and CC'd to Mike Kelly (Eden Monaro, Aus) and John Barilaro (Monaro, NSW)

Mt Selwyn makes skiing affordable for just about everyone. If it isn't rebuilt, skiing will be purely a pass time for the uber wealthy.

Their press release says it will be rebuilt. Surely he has insurance. The guy owns 2 ski resorts, a radio network, a cinema and an airport. And yes it’s all great for the community. But I don’t think he’s exactly struggling.

looking at those pictures I think the one with the stairs is of the newer ski hire building.
The one with the burnt out loader is the main building but i think there are building/s to the right of that that are also missing.

    unlike my own post.

Selwyn Snow Resort Update – Monday 6th January 2020

We can advise that NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service staff were able to access the resort yesterday.

While we do not yet know the status of lifting and snowmaking infrastructure, we can confirm that the resort buildings have been severely damaged by the fire.

The below photos were taken Sunday 5th January.

The Blyton Group is committed to Selwyn Snow Resort and our focus now is on rebuilding an even better Selwyn. We look forward to working with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the NSW Department of Planning, Industry & Environment and other relevant agencies in this process.

We will update you with further information about the resort as it comes to hand.

They should at least be able to throw in a couple of insulated de-mountables and rope tows for this season (assuming NPWS and rest of government agrees) to have something running.

I’m sad about Selwyn too. I just think there are many more deserving of post bushfire assistance than a wealthy businessman. I hope he rebuilds, he’s been pretty good at making things happen so far. The airport as an example.

My hope is they get something "temporary" up for the next 1-2 winters whilst longer term rebuild (plans drawn and approved, builders found etc) can occur. Dongas for onsite staff and ski patrol, big shed x 3 for shelter, ski hire and maintenance. The biggy will be lift infrastructure -can't really substitute "temporary" there. Well actually they can. You'd have to assume T-Bars could be restored pretty quick - relatively simple tech with parts easily replaced. So Racecourse could be OK and Powerline Poma. There were two surface drag lifts not really utilised much - the platter in New Chum Bowl and the T-bar alongside Home Run which kind of lifts to the same point as Township triple. Township triple chair will be the biggy - as I suggested, get those Army engineers onto it ASAP once urgent tasks elsewhere have been completed.

Availability of parts may be the issue, if the lifts are damaged.
Gear for ski hires has to be ordered by late October for May/June delivery.
The whole operation is not as simple as driving to the local Bunnings to get stuff.
