    Hey all,

First time poster and looking to get some advice on September skiing.

We are looking at potentially going down to Thredbo or Perisher around 18 September this year for a few days.

Is it worth going down in terms of there being enough snow and enough of the higher runs being open at both / either Thredbo and / or Perisher?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers!

If it's anything like the last few of Septembers, you should be right.

It all depends on the conditions but I would try to go earlier in the month.

    Welcome to the forums.

It could go either way. Play it by ear as we get closer to your chosen dates.

It's always a risk on any dates. Been raining for 3days now.

Cheers! Do they generally still have most the runs open? Supertrail etc in Thredbo and Mt Perisher?

Cheers! Only issue is needing to book with lift passes all selling out. Any idea what the past few mid-late Septembers have been like? I was in Perisher the first weekend of September last year and it was great.

Don't book anything that doesn't offer full refunds.

The last three seasons have been good ones so plenty of snow in September. So far this season is looking ... meh. But things can change. Keep an eye on August snowfall and the reports in the Perisher and Thredbo threads. Both resorts have something to offer; don’t get too caught up in the “my resort is better than your resort” rubbish.

I have skied at Thredbo during the week of the 18th of September once and it was just fine. Admittedly, the official snow depth that week was at 241cm (that seasons peak depth), a very good cover at for point in the year. The lower slopes were a little bare despite the very deep cover high up, but the groomers did a very good job keeping everything open top to bottom.

Can't remember if it was 2017 or 2018 but I skied in late July, August, September and the October long weekend. Still heaps of snow, even in the no snow making areas like Bushranger etc, but of course snow conditions were let's say 'deep and soft'; need a pair of those water skis people use on the slopes. The groomers were top to bottom, but obviously crap at the bottom in Thredbo. Still skiiable though.

You could also check out trip reports from previous years in the resorts pages to get a better idea.

    Richard's report - http://www.ciau.com.au/snow/rrr.asp
    Still a good resource.
This year could be comparable to 2006 - post titles like 'hanging in there' and 'only a miracle'.
    I wouldn't book anything.

NSW seems to have some snow. VIC. has nearly none. Even the measuring thingie at Spencer's Creek looks a bit low for this time of the year. I went to Perisher in Mid Sept. 2019 and I was mainly water skiing not Nordic skiing . It is a long drive from Melb. to be rock hopping and water skiing on classic XC skis.
The BC skiing out towards Bob's Ridge on the AAWT was cooked. I walked it in hiking boots.
    :-0
This ski season looks like rubbish but who knows what the weather might do during August?, however Weather Modelling suggests modest snowfalls at best at present.

Thank you all for the inputs! Seems in general there is snow but obviously no guarantee. May just roll the dice as it is the only time I can to the snow this year.

    Cheers!

Hope our luck turns because of this. He'll be the mascot of the season!

I've got my trip booked almost exactly one month before when Rig90 is going and it's looking sure.

I think that comment was based on the way the season has so far been weather-wise. Things could obviously get better from now on.

Last season had some good snow falls in August and there was a solid base. Mid Sept. at Perisher for XC skiing was cooked. It was water skiing.
I just go by my own experience. This season esp. in VIC. has been SHITE. Unless we get snowmageddon in August I cannot see the skiing being much chop in September.

There might be. And it might be enough. But at that time of year, you usually have much better luck at Perisher.

Nobody I know wants to ski the carparks and creeks at the bottom, they want to ski the slopes.

You'll have a great time, enjoy  I was at Thredbo earlier this year with only 1 run open (2 if you count Friday Flat, which I don't, call me a snob if you will :p) and we had an awesome day. It is all about how willing you are to enjoy it, and set your expectations low as who knows what the weather gods will bring :)

Take the rock hopper skis and the hiking boots too.If there is snow then be sure to ski before 12 Noon before it turns to slow slush.

Its kind of moot now. September doesn't often have good conditions for snowmaking.

Antons, sponers, basin, karels are still skiing ok. The cruiser area was ok too. Anywhere EDIT"else" is done.

Thats not correct. As in up high is still skiing very nicely. Was there last week, Antons, Sponars, Karels and Basin still have plenty of cover - 2 weeks could be a very different story with no snow in the forecast but with the mountain still taking cash for the lifts suspect they will try to keep it open as long as possible this season.

If Thredbo want to make it to the close, they should start shifting snow into mounds above Basin, its the only hope. It goes so quick with hairdryers on. And its not that deep.

up high is ok, as I said. Any thing lower is not ok
Actually is very correct. Ok I wouldn't say nicely but ok which isn't bad. First thing on the groomed areas is nice then after a few runs back to ok.
I mean anywhere else is done.

Absolutely. it wont be epic but as has been mentioned above there will be enough up high to still have fun. The chances of there being fresh snow within the next 2 weeks at the NSW resorts are as high as the me being able to go to Japan in January 2021.
