The purpose of this thread is to share the errors you have made in your Japanese travels, so others don't repeat them.

Mine (it's fortunately not too long a list)

    • Stayed in Goryu Hakuba. I don't mean to denigrate the Goryu accomodation generally, which can be as good as anywhere else in Hakuba. And Goryu is increasingly popular with Aussies and clearly has some good skiing. But the Goryu bus system doesn't integrate well with the rest of the valley. And while there are some nice restaurants that way, there are no more than a handful. My tip is unless you have a car or plan to ski and stay almost exclusively in Goryu, don't stay there.
    • Lace up boots. I've travelled with lace up hiking boots for 5 trips now. I'm slow on the uptake. You are constantly taking shoes on and off, sometimes covered in snow and/or wet. Wear boots/shoes which are easy to slip on and off.
    • Know where the international card ATMs are located. One time I turned right rather than left at Hakuba Station. Rather than an easy 3 minute stroll to the post office, I had a seemingly endless 20 minute treck through snow to a supermarket (with international ATM) with a 4 year old on my shoulders
    • If you plan to buy something of value, bring your passport. You'll save around 8%.
    • Good coffee is hard to find. When you find it, treasure it. Bamboo at Hakuba Station remains the best in Hakuba imho. I can't remember the coffee joint in Niseko and haven't been there since 2008 anyway.
    • Book Tokyo accommodation in advance. This trip I planned to book my last 3 nights in Tokyo while I was in Hakuba (still over a week in advance) to find a limited number of available rooms. I should have locked it in from Oz.
    • The first stop on the bus from Shinjuku to Disneyland is Disney Sea. Stay on the bus for the next stop. No biggie - a short monorail ride to Disneyland.
    • Learn the bus timetable at Hakuba. I've made the novice error of wanting to rely on an early bus back to accomodation when I only want to so a half day. Sometimes there is a bus, sometimes not. Also, if you order a cab it may or may not arrive. Don't wait though - go to the information desk and ask them to book one. Chill, there's not much you can do.
    • If your accomodation sells lift tickets, buy them there. They'll usually be at least 1000 yen cheaper than on hill. First trip I thought something shady was going on, and bought them on hill every day. Doh. That probably cost me $200 all up.
    • If you are a Thredbo season pass holder you have to go to Happo Bus Station to buy your 50% 5 day pass. Don't go to the Happo gondola. Doh. Also, it's a 5 if 9 day pass. I never noticed that until after I'd skied 5 consecutive days. Doh again.

This times a million. Slip on ftw. People seriously overkill the shoes they wear in the snow. I recently got some of these: http://www.salomon.com/au/product/xa-pro-3d-gtx.html

Sole grip is the most important thing IMO.

Buying train tickets individually instead of just getting a JR pass. Spent way more $$ than necessary.

I took pictures of the bus timetable with my phone - especially when going to a new resort for the first time. We then checked the timetable at lunchtime and decided what bus we'd get home.

I had a great pair of Aldi boots but the laces were sooooo annoying on my first Japan trip. Rather than buying new boots for my next trip, I bought a lengthy strip of elastic from Spotlight plus a couple of little elastic grips. Replaced the laces with the elastic - they became slip on and off in an instant - just had to loosen and tighten the grips!

    • Waiting to buy your toiletries in Japan. Generally a good idea, but often the packaging is exclusively in Japanese, so you have no idea what you're buying. I bought shampoo conditioner when I wanted shampoo, had no idea what pain killer I bought (ibuprofen? Heroin?). Was that toothpaste or hemoroid cream?

    • Waiting to buy Japanese whisky duty free. If you see some in a store, buy it. Don't wait until you get the airport.
    • While taxis at Hakuba and Niseko are good with ski bags, taxis in Tokyo aren't. It might only be a short connection from the bus or train to the hotel, but if there's no hotel shuttle bus you might have trouble getting to your accomodation with ski bags.
    • Mexican food in a Japanese ski resort. Why?

Grip is pretty good, slip on n off is excellent, ankle high just works. Use plenty of Dubbin prior to departure.

    I may as well add some "do's", some of which are covered off above;

    • Do let your accomodation make your dinner reservation. You will probably get a better table.
    • Do wear easy to get on and off footwear with good tread.
    • Do buy one of those cheap white plastic umbrellas which are great for when it snows.
    • Do buy lift tickets from your hotel.
    • Do drink the whisky.

Don't: Tokyo for New Years if you like a party or fireworks. Very quiet unless you like lining up at temples for a new year blessing.

Going for 3 weeks instead of 1 to 2
Theres only so many times going on Cortina even on a pow day I can take . Or should have slept in car and been mobile

Going without a ski touring partner to get to steeper stuff

    Not seeing more of Tokyo

Yeah , I think if you are an advanced skier the resorts are pretty boring ....
touring out of Hakuba is good ...

I would not go back to Japan unless touring for the skiing but the people and culture is awesome .

Take my opinion with a grain of salt ...Should say there were some skiers around my level who were staying two months who were happy with cortina laps ... but I don't know how it wasn't that steep to get your blood pumping even out of bounds .

I have no idea why people would go to Niseko for the skiing if it's so flat if you are advanced with no kids . Hakuba deserves a week if not touring .

Plenty of 1000m ascents to huge steep lines if touring that are way steeper .

    LOL
    Yup!!
Due to late booking we could only get 2WD. It was great most of the time, but it was very funny getting an unloaded run up to the hill and having all the passengers running up the hill. Definitely get 4WD! But book early!

Just because there are slippers at the door doesn't necessarily mean you must take your shoes off...
We noticed the sign 'no spikes' but because there were lots of slippers we assumed it was shoes off...nope, only shoes with spikes off...

Ahhh well...I'd rather mistakenly take shoes off than mistakenly leave shoes on!

Don't go to Cortina on a powder day. Unless you want it tracked out by 9:30am, after a 30 min wait in the queue.

Heh heh.... That may be so, but if you know WHICH resort to go to, on which day, you will not get bored.

Yesterday, not Cortina. @TJ lapping the same run. (probably lap 5)

What was the experience you had. Deep snow on the road ? Was it on the main roads ? Honshu or Hokkaido ?

Thinking we may need a 4wd for our next trip to Hokkaido.

Honshu... Backroads.... Heavy snow.. Ice ice ice.... No road grading... To name a few.

Plus, it was solo trip and I wanted to be safe.
