    From this; http://www.47news.jp/localnews/nagano/2011/06/post_20110622101906.html

For over half a century that, close to the entrance of the pond (Yamanouchi-machi, Shimotakai) Shiga Kogen, they carry tourists between (Hopporu)哺from hot springs in the middle "Shiga Kogen Ropeway" was take off is 21 day, I found. This is because the passenger has been reduced to about one-seventh of its heyday, "finished the mission," said Shiga Kogen resort development to navigate. However, the plateau bustling with tourists throughout the year, "a symbolic presence" only (trader stay), tourism officials have spread confusion. According to the company, started the same ropeway service in March (1960) 1960. Between stations 1 ... about Izumi哺温from Station - Lotus Pond

Looks like it closed due to lack of patronage through out the year. It was installed in 1960 so had a few years under its belt. My guess is the instructor we spoke to was on the $. Old lack of year round usage and needed some R&M. Economics...

To be quite honest I didn't even know they'd pulled the thing out. It's a tragedy.

Here's the Japanese wiki - quite interesting. Seems the March 11 earthquake sent ridership plummeting and escalating some concerns about maintenance. Somewhat of a perfect storm.

And here's a full ride in summer (over 8 mins). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1H_6fvZgm8

You can get to the other station ( Hoppo Onsen ) by bus either from Yudanaka or Nagano. Not that hard to find.

    Hope the links work.

    noice.

We did that on the back from Yokote. Got off at Hoppo and skied down to the egg. Bloody lucky we asked someone about the ropeway -before- we got off at Hasukie.

Sorry I have been slack and quite crook and have not (until now) loaded the video of our last day skiing. It was almost two weeks ago now.... very sad.
Any way here it is. Started the day with a few bomber runs down Olympic at Yakebi then went over to Ichinose Family.

Sure is, and as an 18 yo he knows almost everything!! [IMG].
I am happy to see him back on Skis, as he went to the dark side for a couple of years...
Both he and the "daughter" had a great time with the school groups. They both wanted to speak Japanese and all the School kids wanted to do was speak English. Some very funny mixed language conversations.

OK, time to post some (hopefully) useful information:

After a bit of a struggle finding accomodation we ended up at Hotel Shiga Kanko in Hasuike. Booked through agoda.

    Pros:

Japanese family run hotel, perhaps a bit unloved like many of the Japanese hotels in the area that have suffered a lack of custom in recent years. Despite this clean and tidy. Staff excellent, enough English to cope with foreigners like me who have about 10 words of Japanese. Food is Japanese with what seems to be a set menu weekends and buffet style otherwise. Likewise for breakfast. Quality is excellent and enough choice if you don't fancy particular bits of the cuisine.

Easy ski-in from the top of Giant lift, trail ends in hotel car park! Ignore the signs to take off the skis and ski to the ski locker room door - everyone else does.

    Cons:

At the Hasuike end of the resort, so a bit remote. Giant, and hence most of the rest of the resort can be accessed, but not exactly ski-out. NO local nightlife at all, so if you don't go half board you could be struggling to get a evening meal if you don't have a car. If you do have a car, you will need chains just to get to the car park.

Overall, happy to overlook the short walks to get onto a ski-field for the excellent service offered. Made to feel welcome and that's a big part of the stay.

pretty right, the percentage of extreme is about the same. Though the opportunities for some pitch with lots of powder is good.

If its the same "watch out for cliff" then that's a very interesting area. Had a good look at the bowl/area from adjacent gondola.... It had lots of track on it at one stage [IMG]

Pretty much a clear sky day today with only a bit of cloud cover. Only about 100 mm of fresh stuff, despite it snowing for most of yesterday. Some places firmed up very quickly.

Spent a fair bit of the day bring RM along, rather that chasing the fresh stuff.

Strangely I thought the better skiing was yesterday when it was snowing - very few people around and magical soft stuff everywhere!

Hi guize. I'm thinking about giving Shiga a try in my 2014 trip, but i'm not 55+. Just want some confirmation that they will still let me ski the resorts, or is it like Sun Peaks?

Narrowing accom choices down for March, any thoughts on Hotel Kuhls vs Prince West. Anyone stayed in both locations?

Cost wise it will be pretty similar if you add meals to the Prince price. Both seem to offer ski in/out and the Kuhls looks less monolithic.

Kuhls wont commit but hint at lift ticket deals that might be available, maybe the same ones Sandy posted?

I recall snowjunky was going to stay there in Feb around the same time as MP but he's been awful quite since.
