Well we are back home in the hot. Sick of it already!! We had a great two weeks in Japan with 10 days at Shiga Kogen (9 days skiing). We had two amazingly clear days with views to die for and three days when the pow was great (one day was just sensational).
I hope all you boys and girls that are there now or going have as much fun as we did during our stay.

Just about to meet up for shiga mini sic.

More snow this morning, added a nice layer to the groomed and topped up everywhere else. A pretty sunny afternoon over at Okushiga , lots of powder over there. Just having a coffee before heading out again.

Had a great arvo with my son, still finding bits of powder. As a bonus it's snowing lightly outside now.

First day back at work today and all I could think about was SNOW!! POWDER SNOW!!! It was so hard everyone was asking about our trip. The more I tried to get into work the worse it became. So, as I was late to work this morning (you don't want to be late twice in one day) at 3.00pm I gave up and came home. MP hope you are having a great time because unfortunate reality will return all to soon.

Marco, we didn't find the school groups too bad as they all tend to stay on the lower lifts, stay in tight bunches on the slope itself so very easy to avoid, and the instructors were very polite in that they often let you through in front of their group at any que on a lift.(certainly wouldn't get that kind of courteousy at Perisher or Thredbo.) many of the instructors were up for a chat about where we were from etc.

Gota love Okushiga, especially the pastry table at the St Cristoph restaurant in the afternoon when they discount whatever is left [IMG]

One thing I did find a bit confusing was some of the signage as to what lifts were in operation and what was not. We didn't visit Okushiga on day 2 of our visit as we ran onto a sign mid slope from yaketibiyama saying gondola wasn't operational this year due to damage so would need to shuttle bus back. Found out next day when visibility was better that this was not the case. Something lost in translation I suppose.

Sounds like your having a great time. Enjoy.
    TT

Nice day. Love those two detachable double chairs at Okashiga. That's such a nice little pitch.

In the local paper today an article about Australian visitation to US resorts this season being down about 20% on last, guess they are all with you in Shiga......

Did anyone else miss having the Sky Cable Gondola?

It was removed earlier this year apparently and can't seem to dig up any info about it.

Monkeys. Didn't see a one this year. ?

Yep we noticed it was missing after spending 10 minutes trying to work out where it went from and too. Could not see a cable so asked one of the instructors who we were talking too. He thought it needed major repairs so they pulled it down?
We then noticed on some of the trail maps it was crossed off or covered up.

Also spent some time looking for it. There is a sign at the Hasuike station saying it closed March 2011 !

Bit of a pain because I accepted accommodation in Hasuike on the assumption I could use it to get to the rest of the resort.

Found a couple of ways down on to Giant and hence onwards, but they're not that beginner friendly which is causing problems for RM.

    And that coincides with?
Ah, we're blaming that are we?

I've got a new thread going to keep an eye on the defunct infrastructure so peeps on here don't get caught out in future.

Can you tell me if the building on the Takama side has been removed?

And I understand the one-seater and the net over the road has disappeared.

    Can you clarify?

Just for the record, here is the Hasuike end of the now defunct ropeway. Interestingly both the gondolas are still in there.

Been looking for the other end for you, problem is knowing where to look given it doesn't seem to be there. That's assuming I'm looking for this:

That's what I'm wondering. I didn't find it either. Everything that end seems to be have been removed. Damn. I reckon the wire would be worth a bit of coin. I don't think it's really a rope that held it up is it?

Edit: I think the station is at hoppo. I believe the building is at or near 36.727001, 138.507171 and then the suicide chair runs from there to takama.

    Thanks for scouting around. [IMG]

Its a wire rope. Starts as a long length then they splice it into a loop. The splice is very long. From what I gather there are only a few people on the planet who can do the splice (may be an urban myth but sounds feasible). I do know that they test the rope using a system called "eddy current testing". Non destructive using electrical currents and a scope. It looks for irregular magnetic fields.

Like you two we could only see one end but were not exactly sure where the "up hill station was"?

Btw, that song was originally written by one Barry Gibb. And one of my favs.

The song caused recently deceased Robin Gibb to temporary quit the band in disgust.

Most people remember the Bee Gees for gold chains, medallions and hair. This song predates the "I'm goin' nowhere, somebody help me" crap.
