Boo Hoo - our trip ended yesterday and yes just as the snow is about to (hopefully) dump. Although last Tuesday (21st) was still a day that will be etched in the memory banks

We had 7 ski days, 1 full on powder day (above) a few blue sky days with good on piste snow, one day of rain (which was still fun snow) and a couple of days of super hardpacked snow (not quite ice but pretty close).

For the worst season ever it was still a pretty good week, I feel a little disappointed that we didn't get more powder days (that's why we come after all) but we had a great family week together and I definitely rate Shiga Kogen as a ski destination if you want good variety and don't want to have to jump on/off shuttle buses each day. Hopefully we will be back again next year.

Hubby and I will be in Shiga Feb 27 - Mar 3, Prince Hotel West. Praying to the snow god for Japow. Fingers crossed!

Apart from the lift pass vouchers Sandy posted, are there any other deals for multi-day lift pass? Thank you!

No, it's not like other multi area resorts (Hakuba etc) where the various mountains offer daily specials or discount coupons to attract trade. As the entire area is all on the same lift pass there's unfortunately no discount offers (none that we found anyway).

Daily passes are 5500yen per adult with extra days on a multiday pass at 5000 yen (eg a 5 day pass is 25500). Students are at a slight discount (I think 4800/4300 yen per day) and children (u12) half the adult price. Still good value compared to Australian /US/Canadian resorts and Niseko but maybe slightly more expensive than other areas in Japan

this might not be current as I was there in 2018 but I used @Sandy’s coupons recommendation on the forum to get all resort lift ticket with free lunch/beer voucher for the same price as the usual lift ticket. Not sure if it’s still possible?

We arrive the 24th and stay 7 nights.

We have previously used the vouchers sandy posted. 5 yrs ago that was for us. This season tickets are included in our accommodation. Also at Prince West.

    Just a quick question....
Do you pay for the bus from Nagano to Shiga Kogen on the bus or do you have to find an office? I've memorised the bus stop!

In our case, they let us on the bus with no payment (ie no one selling tickets at Nagano) and we paid as we got off. At every stop the recorded announcement said they would be “collecting tickets, please place them in the box provided” and we became increasingly nervous knowing that we had no tickets! But it’s all good - just pay the friendly driver when you get off. Make sure you have cash.

I don't know specifically how that bus works, but typically in Japan if they don't pre-sell tickets you get a numbered ticket when you board and pay the driver when you leave. The amount determined by the display board at the front for the place you boarded. You should be able to find out beforehand what the amount should be. Jutst have that in cash for the driver. Their machine though does have a change facility. Insert a Y1000 note to get 10 x Y100 coins.
    https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2015.html
For Shiga though I would imagine there would be plenty of english language support.

There was no ticket machine on the Nagaden express bus to Shiga when I caught it last year, it was just pay the driver in cash.

Maybe we were the outlier then. While lined up a lady whose English was as bad as my Japanese (thankfully we know Japanese numbers and she had a calculator) sold us these tickets before boarding the bus.

3 full fare and one child.

We caught this bus twice last week. As @elSpike mentions at Nagano station platform 23 there was a lady who sells tickets before you get on. There's also a bunch of younger guys in long black puffer jackets with NAGADEN on the back who are the luggage guys - they will also help if you have any questions. On the return journey (we boarded at Ichinose Ski Area) there was no ticket seller, however a ticket lady got on at ShigaKogen Yamanochi (the central bus depot) and went up the aisle selling tickets and ensuring everyone had one - I assume this is to avoid wasting the drivers time at the end of the journey. However if the ticket lady isnt there, you just pay the driver when you get off the bus.

The driver wont have a ticket machine, merely a device to accept payment (notes & coins) and also change notes to coins or large coins to smaller ones. It helps though if you have the correct amount to start with.

Skiing icy! Terakoya had best snow, but had no time to try Yakibitayama area, as one of us goes back to Asaka today already.

That restaurant was a comedy for us. They had so much trouble with my accent (pretty normal Aussie I think) that they could not understand me saying 4 hot chocolates (Yon Hotchocolato kudasai) that I ended up needing to use google translate for such a simple sentence. Got there in the end though!

Just checked in in our hotel and do the unpakking (and yes wife brought half of our house )
Standard 8 tatami room with own toilet (we order only 6 tatami without own toilet so nice tried!
The hotel has 2 family bath - only inside but with window to the outside and of course usual indoor and outdoor communal onsen (real onsen).

Ski gear an wifes many suitcases were switly handed to us, so we had a almost full skiing day.

Skiing conditions are icy in the mornig and in the afternoon it got sloch ice lower down.
Have to see what the next days bring. But as we do not look for the powder it is ok for us.
But a bit hard surface for our old bones.

Now time for a quick onsen before dinner.

Sorry not stand up to @elSpike standard ( who anyway can do that?) but will try some words here and there.
@elSpike I do not have that problem with the 2000 or 200 degrees cafe - just let the 2 Japanese handle it - how ever I had to be the guide in the area.
Made a round Hoppo Terakoya Ichinose Takamagahara Nishidateyama and back to Hasuike/Maruike.
We returned to Terakoa couple of times as the snow was better there.

    1. Warning : Giant connection to Hasuike where the tow is no more :( one ends up at a Giant part closed down. Had to ski back after walking up (no tow:p) - but the return from Giant was open - so after tunnel from Hasuike keep left (should nt be to difficult for most of you :D)
    2. Warning pist 12 middel part is mogels and further down the ground came through extensively.

But the sun was shinning and now before dinner the wind and snow was so strong that I gave up the outside onsen.
Both outside and inside mens was nice - but maybe people feared me (Corona) as I was the only one.:(

This will be my 3rd time with JAL (and once with Qantas) with the snoroller. I've had the tape measure once at Narita but so far no extra charge! Long may it last!

Snow clearing mashinery working heavily outside the hotel, bloody h......, i need my sleep! LOLLOLLOL
Could not see outside because of damp on the multi layeted windows.
So car-o-meter info has to wait intil it gets light.
We collapsed after dinner, which was a nice (not overwhelming) Japanese style with nabe.
A really bad thing is the acoustic in the dining room, especially with a number a ....... speaking groups around. Luckily we chose a late dinner time and they left soon after we started dinner.
Acoustic is a important thing for me when I go out for dinner (and no @elSpike , it has nothing to do with my age) and usual it test a place before dinning there. But was a bit difficult in this case.
The 3x20 who acompanies me (yes @Ramenman she was after all traided back to me in Izumo) was rather tired after bad sleep last night in Asaka and some management work late night (http://www.ahmadjoudeh.com).

Nevertheless she went straight for the Shiga Kogen draft. Nice beer which lacks a bit up front but returns with good hoped tast towards the end. A good beer.

As I am the only one at the moment I will take on me the heavy burden to tell you:

    It has snowed!

However car-o-meter difficult to read - high winds.

    Lift conditions unknown.

    @sn0wbunny29 chairlift 50 Okushiga closed
due to strong wind so I can not tell about the pistes down there, but the rest of Yakibitai + Okoshiga is fantastic- hurry up!

We took bus over here and will ski most of the area today - but avoid towards Okushiga due to strong northerly windy.
Lunch in Prince west katsudon was tasty - but the place itself is awfull (my taste).

Glad to see you guys enjoyed today. With the wind this morning was stoked they had lifts spinning and on time.

Was good times for us too but for me was Hokkaido cold when ever we popped back on the piste or on the lift. Not used to that being from Hakuba this season. :)

In fact it is possible to find good protection around Yakibitai. The wind was NNW in the morning - later a bit more westerly, so move accordingly.

Dont doubt that all. Every time I leave Shiga I want to learn more about it. We were riding some really nice tree zones up at Yokoteyama so a bit hard to move them :), no complaints though, was just colder than I am used to this season.

@Hyst do you like those Smith's?

For those in Shiga tonight the top lift at Yokoteyama wasnt running when we left at about 1130am as it was on wind hold. Im not sure if it did at all later in the day. You can bet being a weekend they will be keen to run it tomorrow and Im thinking if it wasn't opened today it would be very nice up there tomorrow and you can visit the Crumpet Cafe and the highest bakery in Japan.
