As others have said its an easy shuttle from Ichinose to Okushiga before lessons start. We did this with my son on our first day, its a 10-15 minute trip with 3 or 4 stops along the way. On subsequent days we skied across I think you need to catch 3 lifts so it takes around 30-45mins depending how quick you ski. Ichinose is definitely the place to stay, its central, has the best variety of restaurants and good skiing and access to all areas immediately from the village

We stayed at Okushiga lodge Yama no Mani mani this year just 100 meters from Hotel Phenix and would thoroughly recommend. Western beds with toilet plus onsen, japanese couple great hospitality, lovely lounge area, homemade meals to die for at a very reasonable price. Only seven rooms. Will definitely be back. Okushiga Kogen is our favourite place to ski!

Always good to have a recommendation. We walked around the chalets today and made notes. We've thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Grand Phenix but won't always be able to afford it and we too, love skiing at Okushiga.

Sorry, I missed this! It was all very white and windy so we had a snow play day. None of the lifts were working at Okushiga although Yakebitaiyama was. We decided not to go there and ski back as the light was poor and we didn't want to risk injury ahead of a wonderful bluebird day tomorrow!

So, we have finished skiing for this time in Japan.
Terakoya - Ichinose and back. Nice day.

Waiting for the bus down to Shibu Onsen for recreation time and good food.
Chatting with one of the employees who studies German - we practice a bit while the wife explains the theoretical grammar, which I have no idea about.

In the backgroun one of @Sandy s "Hotels".

I hand over the torch to you and will stay more in the background.
Hope you all get nice skiing and onsen.

One tip for couples of all ages - if you like onsen and like onsen together visit Amagawaso in Sibu-onsen for one night on the way home.

This place is very local, and very traditional, not suited for people who can not climb a steep staircase.
Don't expect a 5 star building but a more traditional house in the outskirts of the village.

Great rotenburo for you together. Only Japanese spoken, but the host will do everything to make you stay outstanding as long as you do not pull the plug and let the water out of the onsen or wash youself with soap in the bath.
She has tried some of this with foreigners.

    Food was truely outstanding.

    Rooms 6 + 4 tatami with kotazu

When we started dinner it looked like this and dishes were added several times after that. Very refined tast.

As you can see we were the only guests tonight.

Well, it snowed lightly all day. Sometimes it was serious snow and other times light dusty snow. We skiied as if it was our last. ( It is.) I can report that the best hot chocolates and coffees can be found at the top of the Higashidateyama gondola.
So tomorrow we head for Narita and leave behind a lovely snowy Okushiga kogen for others to enjoy!

Today should have been wonderful but it was awful :(

My new ski boots are not working for me and my entire left foot lost all feeling. I desperation I tried taking the footbed out at lunch. The liner refused to budge and when it eventually came it it whacked me in the face. At least that was funny. I’m seriously considering quitting skiing because it seems I have faulty feet. Worst of all I didn’t keep my old ski boots because I wanted to have faith the new ones would work but I think they might be worse

On the plus side, the hotel I have been staying at Alpenburg is great, ski in, ski out which is great for bad foot days :D Five course meals every night, alternating between western and Japanese (I swear I’m going home fatter than I came) and I have met some wonderful people here and had some great laughs. The snow has been good as well.

Noooo! Don't give up! Can you find a skiing podiatrist who can do footbeds for you? I had the same experience with hire boots, bought my own and had custom footbeds made. They were my lifesavers (and may be covered on your health insurance). There is an answer!

I have brand new footbeds. Sob. Let’s also say the boots and footbeds weren’t cheap and I don’t exactly have money to throw away (let’s be honest most of us don’t).

I’m in Adelaide which is less than ideal for anything snow related.

Hopefully I’ll be in Canberra sometime this year so my plan is to take my boots with me and find someone good there to help me out.

Back to where you got the boots then, they should have a fit guarantee and work with you until they are right.

New, possibly crazy plan for tomorrow. I bus it from Shiga Kogen to Hakuba, ski the day at Happo One and see if I can get my boots adjusted while I’m there get my boots adjusted while I’m there.

    I hate you :D

If they say they can’t fix them without me buying expensive new liners (it was hinted at when I got them adjusted the first time) I’m going to ask for a refund due to ‘not it for purpose’. Hopefully they take pity on me seeing I’ve come all the way from Shiga Kogen. Wish me luck!

Shame as it’s snowing here this morning but I’ve still got tomorrow.

Random Q - anyone know what it would cost for taxi from shibu onsen back to shiga kogen? Buses don't seem to run past 6:30pm to get you back to prince.

Depends on were in Shiga onsen you would like to go, if you search Yudanaka taxi you find the price from there + 20% for winter.

My little adventure back to Hakuba was going really well but I needed some extra time to try out my tweaked boots on snow and get some more work done so I decided to take the last bus back to a Shiga Kogen and called the hotel to tell them I wouldn’t be back in time for dinner and could they pick me up from Yamanoecki at 10.10pm. So far so good.

I decided to take an earlier bus back from Hakuba to Nagano than I’d originally planned, just in case there was any traffic problems as I didn’t want to get stuck in Nagano. Decided to double check the bus time table when I got to Nagano only to discover that the late bus only runs on Fridays. I’d missed the last bus  In my defence, on the timetable I’d printed from the Internet it only had this information in Japanese.

Anyway, I proceeded to call the poor, long suffering hotel owner on my phone which by now had a nearly dead battery, to tell him I’d missed the last bus and would be getting a hotel near the station for the night. Luckily I had cash, a credit card and even my passport on me. He said no need, catch the Dendetsu line to Yudanaka and I’ll pick you up from there. I made it to the platform with minutes to spare and bless him, Mr hotel owner was there at the other end and he even drove me to a convenience store so I could grab something to eat.

    What a crazy day :D

Once again a huge arigato to the team at Alpenburg for helping me out :)

It would have been better to have bought in Tokyo at Fuso originally, gotten the Salomon boots, and had them heat customise the shell and liner.... takes about an hour.

Unfortunately I have tricky feet. There is a blood vessel and probably nerves placed right at the highest point of my left foot. Put any pressure there at all and I stand numb foot.My previous boots were Salomon and were never right.

The good news is I skied for four hours straight this morning, didn’t even stop for hot chocolate and my boots are nearly there. Ironically, the left boot which was the main problem is now perfect but there a small niggle now with the right boot. My crazy day was worth it :D Now instead of quitting I’m planning my next trip:)

Only problem was I didn’t want to leave Shiga Kogen today and really don’t want to go back to Australia.
