Ok, I'm booked for Diamond Shiga at Ichinose, Friday 14th Feb - Wed 19th Feb.

It's in a pretty good location, about 300m from the main cluster of hotels at Ichinose, and just across the road from the Ichinose Diamond lifts.

Cool. Will be good to have a ski with you. Hard to believe it will be 10 years since the evening at that Izakaya in Shinjuku.

Pre-purchase tickets have only some places that apply to seniors.

Generally, many free coupon tickets (such as Snownavi) apply a 500yen discount on seniors as well.
Seniors age for Shiga Kogen is 60yo. Others vary (50 & 55)

Question for all those more savvy at working out public transport in Japan.

We arrive at Haneda (from Singapore) at 15:35 on Thursday 2nd of January. I thought that that would leave heaps of time to get to our accommodation at Shiga Kogan (Aspen Shiga) that afternoon but from what I can work out we might have a problem. I thought there was a Nagaden bus at 2100 from Nagano to Shiga Kogen but have now found out that that bus only runs on Fridays.
Does anyone know what the timetable of buses is from Yudanaka station to Shiga Kogen Yamanoeki? Or Iiyama station?
What would a taxi fare be from Yudanaka or Nagano station to Shiga Kogen? Would I need to book the taxi? Any other options?
If we do need to stay overnight in Nagano it looks like the first bus does not leave Nagano until 9:00 is this correct?

    As far as I know:
Last local bus from Yudanaka Station up to Shiga Kogen leaves at 18.10.
    http://www.nagadenbus.co.jp.e.yv.hp.transer.com/local/diagram/diagram.php?route=YDS01
After that time it's a taxi.
    https://www.nagadentaxi.co.jp/
From Yudanaka Station would cost about 6,000 Yen.

Best option I think is to overnight at Nagano. Allows for any other delays. There is a hotel right by the station (as there always is in Japan). Then you correct first bus is at 9:00 or 9:10 depending on how far you are going.

    Thanks for your reply
What about overnight at Yudanaka? I think i saw that buses leave earlier from there or a taxi would be a shorter distance.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did see that but thought with a 15:35 landing time we might be cutting it a bit fine.
I am also a bit hesitant to catch the Nagano snow shuttle as the last time we caught it from Narita to Hakuba it was a huge hassle and very disorganised.

I've also had a bad experience with the snow shuttle. We waited I think 2 hours for a delayed flight to land and communication about what was happening was almost non-existent.

Most other ski bus services I've used if you don't show up in time they might wait 10-15 minutes if you're lucky. Otherwise it's bad luck and not fair on the passengers there on time to wait so long.

Unfortunately we are no longer going to Japan this year (which is a WHOLE other story:mad:), which is a bit sad and disappointing as we were really looking forward to Shiga:cry:

Off to Shiga Kogen and Nozawa in February. My current skis are 88cms underfoot so was planning on hiring something fatter over there. I'm also doing a week touristing out of Osaka and a bit worried about lugging them around on the public transport.
I've been told that the range and quality of hire skis in Shiga is a bit ordinary. We're staying at the Prince in the Yakebitaiyama area.
Any thoughts on hiring in Shiga.

Ive been posting a bit about this. You can get some wider skis from both SnowCan and Nord Ichinose in Ichinose village. Both of those have a limited selection of longer and wider skis. You can email SnowCan and get their list of >100mm skis. Prince West has a Viking Rental in the basement. It also has some wider skis available but from memory there were only a few that were longer than 170cm. Getting a reply from them will be more difficult. If I remember I'll take a look for you in early January to let you know.

Realistically even if you can't hire you will be fine on your 88mm. We had most of a metre dump before I went in 2018 at Shiga and I was fine on my 92mm. Bloody awesome welcome present that was. We arrived the day after the resort (Okushiga Kogen) had been shutdown for the day due to took much snow.

I agree. No problems with my 90mm wide skis in January of this year and off-piste skiing/boarding is frowned upon.

It's probably as much about the hassle of lugging them around on the finely tuned Japanese public transport system ie getting on and off the Shinkansen with backpack, suitcase and ski bag.

Daughter of Snowbuck hired gear from Okushiga Kogen hotel when we took her and their gear was OK. Maybe contact them and see what they have available.

    How interesting!!! :)
The first, Terakoya.... If it's where I think it is, that chair is now defunct(the chair up to the shrine)... they stopped that about 10 years ago.
.... unless it's the one up to near the top of the gondola. (in which case, it's the exact same chair)

Giant. It's exactly the same!!!! Except it's only the far left chair that runs these days. And they groom the moguls course, so they can run races down there.

I don't remember where that lift in Terakoya was (I'm relying purely on my slide labeling at the time). But I did take this pic shortly after. You can see in the first pic that there was a double chair (that I was on) running alongside a single chair.

I might need to re-watch this Japanese legendary ski movie:D. This was filmed in 1986 in Shiga Kogen(and on screen in 1987). Heinz-san was in Shiga Kogen in 1986 and it means Heniz-san might have been filmed in the movie, which caused a crazy ski boom in Japan between late 80's and early 90's;)

That bar in the video though was way too fancy for us. This was our pub. Some fun nights in there.
