You must try these bad boys. Oyaki. Easiest to find is the food hall in the department store (can't remember name) adjacent to Nagano station. THey come in sweet, savoury and "funky" fillings

The walk to Zenkoji is fun in itself. Matsushiro is also cool but a bit of a hike.

If you rented a car, I would say Togakushi. You can get there by bus, but it'll take too long if you only have a few hours.

If you have a car, there is a longer way there up a road called the Azusagawa Loop Line where you can stop off at the now-abandoned Olympic bobsleigh track. It's open and you can just walk in and look around. The shortest Nagano-Togakushi route heads behind Zenkoji up a super-steep cage-like snow shelter with concrete cobbles. Do not attempt this with regular tires and 2wd!

    G'day all,

I've freshly signed up here because of the awesome trip reports/info to be found, thanks to all who've contributed in the past!

I'm heading to SK lateish Jan (and have been sweating over the snow forecast like everyone else), and have a couple of questions if anyone can help:

    - I'm staying at Aspen Shiga, does anyone have any info (prices, gear quality) about their ski hire? I've emailed an enquiry a week or so ago but haven't heard anything...
    - What's the access like between Hasuike bus stop and the bottom of Giant? I was considering either grabbing my hire gear in Hasuike as soon as I get off the bus (about 1430), or alternately getting a lift/shuttle bus back _up_ to Hasuike the next morning in order to get the hire gear.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

Late Jan snow will be fine. You can absolutely stop worrying about that.
Most of the shiga places will have pretty standard piste skis. Think 75 waisted, last few years model rental skis. Perfectly serviceable for shiga pistes.
Not sure on the aspen shiga / bus to giant but the map indicates it’s not too far.

Hey Wokket. Will you still be in Shiga on 5 February?

I’ll be arriving then and staying at Alpenburg next door to Aspen Shiga.

We are at Nozawa Onsen ( with minimal snow & none down low ) so we skied Kumanoyu and Lower part of Yakebitai in the arvo.

Not much open really except for a handful of lifts. Gondola 2 at the latter was not running but gondala 1 was going. I couldn't tell which runs though as I didn't g that far over. Stayed with wifey who is a green runner at the moment.

I think Ichinose had a few lifts going both sides also but I was not there so can't confirm, the runs. I think there was a few cm overnight and a dusting during the day.

In general it was a leisurely day, with no black runs in my own areas - maybe some more snow later this week will open them up.
    Cheers all and Merry Christmas.

 You choose the right timing - your snow will be OK.

but only little snow does it - just take a look at Mike:

Skied Ichinose today and it was super busy... Everyone from the region is at shiga just now on the few runs that are open.

Snow quality is ok, albeit a little icy in patches, and bare in some also.

Snowed lightly on and off for most of the day - and when we left also.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a 20-30cm top up... Hopefully we have a day at Nozawa..

There's a few more courses currently open at Shiga Kogen:
    https://www.shigakogen-ski.com/trail-map

    Running previously:
    - Kumanoyu limited
    - Bottom of Ichinose Family, Ichinose Diamond,
    Opened recently(partial):
    - All of Kumanoyu (open & partially) + the trail to Yokoteyama
    - Bottom of Yokoteyama
    - Top of Ichinose Family
    - Just the double chair at Yakebitai, Prince South running, plus the course down to Prince West.
    - At the left, the top of Okushiga is open, so the gondola must be running for access, both up and downloading.
    - Plus Tanne no Mori is now running.
    - Sun Valley

Halfway through the day at shiga kumanoyu and the weather is super windy but lots of snow - well over 1cm p/h

Although there is lots of fresh stuff around, I would say it’s a little more wet snow than the usual powder.

    Time for lunch

Wet snow is better than sleet or rain!!! That's the advantage of Shiga Kogen... much higher elevation than most places.

And wet snow makes the best base for compaction.

I knocked off early today after some of the shiga lifts were shut down due to wind... With less lifts running the open lift lines got longer... Almost got blown off the mountain with some gusts today - stopped us dead in our tracks.. Which is a shame because although there was a huge volume of snow, a lot of it will be wind blown...

Snow quality improved over the morning and when we left it was snowing below Yamanouchi Town... I can't say if this is the dump to open up more runs but let's hope so.

At least when I got back we have had a good fall in Nozawa Onsen.

This type of scenario often favours large snowfalls at Shiga Kogen, due to elevation, where other places get rain, SK gets snow.
I'd say that many more courses will be open tomorrow. Not sure of official depths, but there could be as much as 40cm of new snow by morning (additional snow from yesterday's base)

Looking out the window here in Nozawa village the rooftops seem to have about 4 inches of accumulation. I agree that today should be a good one with much, much more open.
Wifey wants a day trip to Tokyo though :)

We will also be in SK from 16 Jan. I haven't been monitoring the conditions (or anything snow related) since the August southern hemisphere season wrap up, and being unfamiliar with Japan info websites but was a bit alarmed to see this :

    Fingers crossed for mid-late Jan.

Have seen 2wd vehicles with (wire maybe ) chains spinning wheels.
Have also seen a BMW X3 or 5 stuck deep...
Also saw a small van stuck deep.. ( not sure on awd )
Small Nissan 2wd that ran into a side gutter seemed to be the culprit in all of this..
My guide tells me these cars were not Nagano plates ;)
All in the space of 2kms which has taken around 2hrs to navigate ..
I think I questioned earlier in this thread that chains might be ok on a 2wd? Hell no .. this section of road is pure ice. Our awd van with snow tyres hasn’t missed a beat..

    Rules:
    1. If you have a choice, never drive down the mountain between 4:30-6:00 pm on a Sunday. Every man and his dog will be doing that, to get back to Tokyo. Given the
    2. In early season, people from Tokyo will be heading to the places that have snow, so be even more aware of rule 1.

Number plates are by city not Prefecture, so you usually need to know the city names in Kanji. So for Tokyo area, that would include Tokyo, Shinagawa, Kawasaki, Chiba, Saitama, Yokohama, etc.
Nagano would include Nagano, Iiyama, Matsumoto, etc.

It’s now a mix of wet fat flakes And occasional very light rain here. More a heavy mist really. Temp is probably 1°C
