There are always school groups around mid week. Depends, if you are staying in a place with western beds, it's unlikely schools will be staying there, as you can fir way more kids on tatami mat than with beds.

Enquire with your accommodation provider whether you have a school group staying in the same hotel, easy.
Shiga is big enough to disappear from most unwanted's

School kids hang around the bottom of the hills. On the beginners runs.Plus they dont frequent the bars and restaurants at night.

Shinkansen to Nagano and then regular train to Yudanaka to get to Shiga right?

Just take the bus from Nagano. If you get to Yudanaka, you still need to get the bus.
Unlike a lot of resorts in Japan, which are located in flat valleys next to mountains, Shiga Kogen is located up in the mountains, where trains can't go. That's why the bottom elevation is around 1350m.

    Thanks Sandy!
another question. How feasible is it (without a car) to take a bus from a hotel somewhere in Shiga to Shibu Onsen to enjoy the village and onsens after half a day skiing and then make it back to the hotel?

Buses will take you down that way, including the snow monkeys stop. But there are a lot of onsens around Shiga Kogen.

Ex Tokyo, consign ski gear to lodge/hotel at Shiga by Takkyubin, take a day or two to get there (sightseeing in/around Tokyo if you want) and you do not have to lug skis etc around - on/off trains and buses. Then, the same back from hotel to airport.
Yes, it takes a day opr two, but the time is better spent looking at the country, rather than rushing to get to what is undoubtedly the best snow on the planet!

Sandy do you happen to have a link to the bus schedule for buses from Nagano to Shiga? or, alternatively, do you remember the last one's rough departure time?

I just had a look at their website: http://www.nagadenbus.co.jp/express.html
and the summer timetable is still up. Unless Sandy has another link to their new winter one?

Hi all, just looking at buying some lift tickets online for Shiga for our trip at the end of Jan.

I assume the 'all mountain' tickets are the way to go but please any feedback or tips much appreciated...

    TIA, Jo

Hey all- Heading up to Ichinose from Tokyo on the morning of Saturday 14th Jan, do you think it will be difficult to get a seat on the bus to Ichinose from Nagano given it is a Saturday? and if so can you book in advance? thanks

I'm not sure where you are staying, but the hotel owner at Khuls has offered to pick us up from Yamanouchi at no cost. So it may be worth enquiring with your accomodation as to wether they offer this service

Thank you & yes helpful. I notice that that our accomm also advertises rental. Any feedback on renting from accomm versus hire outlets in Shiga? We will need most of the kit unless we go on a shopping spree in Tokyo beforehand...

If it's a smaller place you are staying at, the gear is most likely 5-8 years old!!!!

We are making the family trip again to Shiga arriving 23 Jan. This year we will need gear hire (boots/skis) for the kids. We are staying in Ichinose. So will check out Snowcan and the Prince Hotels... from memory there is also a hire place across the road at Ichinose Family?
Main question- want to get some lessons for the kids (9 &12) They are intermediate skiiers. Is the Shiga International Ski School at Okushiga the best bet? Any advice welcome. Thanks :)

Staying at the Prince West. It's not flash but it's not too bad for the money. We're going to try to find that curry house tonight.

I need some tips on the best places to ski - maybe some of Sandy San's secret areas ;)

That would have been great but we're leaving on Saturday heading to Myoko for the week. Only a quick visit to Shiga to check it out this year. Next year for sure!

We didn't make it to the curry house. We got as far as the first building on the left walking toward Ichinose. Can't remember what it was called, but it has red lanterns hanging from the windows. We really liked it! We had a bit of an assortment. Yakitori, omelette, some sort of hotpot etc. We loved it. Good prices too.

Yep, that place is good on a clear cold night, or a fierce snowy night, because it's not so far from the Prince.

Great day today at Shiga for first day out... They reckon about 30cm last night and it then snowed all day, and got heavier in the arvo. There was fresh powder everywhere and when you got back up off the gondola all the previous tracks had been filled in. Epic. Can't wait for tomorrow. (sorry there are no photos. It was pretty white and at minus 15 degrees, too cold to whip out the phone!)
