    Hey team,

I came up with the crazy idea of throwing in a day trip to Hiroshima from Kyoto.

Looking at the shinkansen times and prices it seems very very expensive to get there. I won't be getting the JR pass as I will have a hire car for the rest of the time in Japan.

Does anyone know of a cheaper 'package' deal for tourists to get there and back for less than $300 each?

I did the opposite crazy, day trip to Kyoto from Hiroshima after dropping the kids at Universal Studios. Very doable. I had a JR pass though.

I did the same trip years ago. Not so silly. Had a rail pass and got up early and got back for a late ramen and beers.

For anyone who has purchased this? Do they check the kids' passports for dob? Mine are 12 and I was hoping to get them in as kids to save a bunch.

FWIW, we did an overnight to Hiroshima. Well... 2 nights.
    - My daughter at the time was ~10-11 years of age.
positives: the accom is heaps cheaper than Kyoto.

    We did the following activities:
    - Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum (warning, its pretty confronting and unfiltered, lots of displays of burnt clothing and kids lunchboxes, and stories from people about the day etc.... but I thought it was important to see and that my daughter was appropriately mature to see it).
    - Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Most of the other top 10 attractions are either in the park or just outside it, e.g. Atomic Bomb Dome, Children’s Peace Monument are all a short walk and the Museum is also in the park.
    - Hiroshima Castle - its a rebuild obviously... but it has a lot of Samurai exhibits and armor outfits for kids and adults to try on.
We also spent a half day getting the ferry out to Miyajima island (to lighten the mood) after viewing all the memorials.
We had great weather and there is lots of free range deer and curio shops to see.

I would definitely recommend the trip to Hiroshima it but wouldn't take young kids to the Memorial Museum.

I took my kids as young ones to Dachau.
Very somber but worth the journey and to this day they recall it as a worthwhile experience. I’d take them to the Hiroshima memorial museum however I’d also be prepared to leave part way through if it became too much. We left early with adults because they lost it. Sometimes I think kids cope better than adults, and it is a real conversation opener.

    To the nth degree.
Can’t even get an extra shot in your coffee in most places. Not possible. We ordered 4 pizzas in a little bar in Yokahama, 2 came out and I gave the girl a 5000 and said it was for all 4. No no no, and gave me 3000 change. 5 minutes later when the other 2 arrived I gave her 2000 of the 3000 she had given me earlier.
Must follow the rules. Zero flexibility.
You’ll be paying age appropriate rates for your kids I’m afraid.

When you go to Hiroshima you need to eat some Hiroshima style okonamiyaki..
And in miyajima, oysters are the way to go

We'll be doing this day trip from Kyoto (or Osaka working out the final itinerary at the moment) also. Hiroshima is probably in the top 2 of things I want to see/do the most despite that it will be very emotional and confronting. Trains running regularly we'll leave early morning.

Well, the Nozomi will cost 11,420yen each way = ~ $305 round trip
If you catch the Hikari Shinkansen & change to the Sakura Shinkansen at SHin-Kobe, it will cost 11,100yen each way =~ $296 + 23 minutes.

Not worth the extra effort and time for the minuscule saving IMHO. Plus then you don’t have the Nozomi bragging rights.

One of my grandmothers died there.... The other survived after the her friend's house was knocked over, but was saved by falling next to a stone rice grinding plinth. It's the often the melted and twisted remains of every day objects that have an impact.

yeah that's what we will probably be doing, that also covers the train from kansai to kyoto station as well as the train trip to the 1000 arches. We'll probably drive to the golden temple on our way out of town as we don't want to miss that!

Gee whiz Sandy, I’m sorry for your loss.
It must be v hard to visit the Hiroshima and the memorials.

I’ll have to go another time. My wife found her 92’ visit v moving. Next time we’ll go together.

If you you are a whiskey fan, and plan well enough in advance, in between Osaka and Kyoto lies the Yamazaki distillery - local train access.. The distillery tour is well worth the time, and money, and also includes a tasting.

But, you need to book months in advance - https://www.suntory.com/factory/yamazaki/info/
