After 8 trips to Sun Peaks and on our 15th trip to Canada, we are revisiting Silver Star next year for 8 weeks. Its been 15 years since we were there. We only took downhill skis then, but now we travel with cross country gear as well so we are looking forward to exploring the cross country trails as well as revisiting the downhill.

Off to sunny SS this arvo to officiate at a round of the Canada Cup mtn bike DH series. Looking forward to riding the new gondola instead of the clunky old village double. I'll get a few summer pics for you SS fans.

Grand opening of gondola today. Zillions of people expected for free breaky and lift rides. We took a sneaky preview ride on it yesterday to do the course inspection. It's a fast lift, just 4 minutes to the top. Gondola spacing seemed fine to me, enough to load but not much more than that. Top station is 50 m from the 6 pack. Snow school will he taking first timers to the top to a new training area reserved for them there.

Still lots of summer snow in the Monashees.

Sounds like good policy @Crystal. You need caffeine and sugar for stimulus before the drive out of the big city.

    Hi all SS folk.
Does anyone have any contacts with management at SS. I asking for a colleague in the US.
I know there was a bit of a split with Big White after Des Schumann died with his son taking charge of Big White and his daughter Jane running Silver Star.
    Any contacts would be appreciated.
    Cheers

FWIW they named the new gondola in honour of Des Schumann.

I'll send you a PM re management.

Excellent. Thanks Sly. Des did wonderful things for both Big White and unfortunately didn't get time to get stuck into Silver Star but it's clear to see the legacy remains.

Well, after 5 trips to SP and a hankering to do something different, the Anthem's have surfaced and arrived at Silver star.....

We have always enjoyed BenZknees and Kneedeep reports over the years and the Backside of the mountain looked promising on the trail maps.....

We are here until Jan 25th so if anyone wants to sherpa me through their secret stashes or cruise the groomers for a bit, the Anthems are keen to have a few runs with you all.

Thanks for the big hi. We will be arriving in Silver Star on 30th Jan for 5 weeks. Don't wear out the snow on the downhill or the xc trails. Save some for us.

Speaking of lines (down steep bits), I would love to get some suggestions from any forum members on their picks for front side or back side. There are a lot of stashes in them trees I am sure..

Had a play in Deer Park trees today.... pretty fun. Alder area piques my interest although a local guy I met on the chair today said not to go out there alone..... Probably good advice..... Think I will just have to hang around the entrance off Eldorado with my thumb out.... LOL

Lower deer park, trinity trees, silver meadows all good. Don't dismiss Silverwoods, great tree runs after fresh snow, Robin hood, Sherwood forest, bakers acres, glade runner.
Alpine meadows worth exploring too, just have to watch out you Don't drop down too far or you will end up at the Silver Queen.

Thanks KD. Will put that excursion on the back burner until I get a bit more ski fit and the hill gets a little more snow. Still a lot of sticks and things poking through on the double blacks atm. To be expected this time of year I would imagine.

Yep need a good cover on the doubles, normally ok by early January, some like Headwall always a bit dicey on the steep sections.

Thanks KD and crystal for the recommendations. Pretty much the areas I have spotted in my reckies from the chair rides and green runs that go by those glades. Just need to get in there and do it. A lot of the creeks and logs in trinity trees are a bit sketchy but lower Deer Park was a lot of fun.

For sure Crystal, I am looking forward to it. Your young man was incapacitated when we were in SP but loved the turns I got to do with you and +1 on his board. Slowly learning some bits of the mountain. Had 10cm + overnight so had a play in Robin hood + Trinity trees today. Loving the terrrain here. One can do some ego cruising (Far out onto Silver fox is so mint) then pop over the back and get really challenged (tried Headwall today... OMG  haha). If theses regular top ups keep coming through the mountain should be excellent for when you arrive....

I have a question for all the regular visitor to SS forumites............

What are your favourite front side and favourite back side runs?......

OR maybe, favourite green, blue, black and double black?........

My favourite Green(ish) is Definitely Far out onto BX Express.... What a great sustained cruiser....

Still working through the blues and blacks so would love to hear your thoughts....

After you have tried those, Free Fall and Doognog are very interesting. I normally start laughing half way down, or is it nerves? Very interesting , don't fall or you will die.

I will give all of the blacks and doubles that are open a try. Want to ski every inch of the mountain this trip.
I know exactly what you mean about the laughing bit. For me, It's that little (I am still alive) chuckle I get as I just negotiated through something like three vertical small car sized bumps complete with a botched pole plant and maybe a log poking out the back face of one that you have to jump............ The stuff we keep going back for more of...... LOL

Another to try, Spirit Bowl, from the top of Bon Diablo. BZ lost it at the top one year and didn't stop until the bottom, skis and poles yard sale.
The hardest for me is Stardust, not that steep but narrow, I can't turn quickly enough. There is also an unofficial steep narrow trail off Caliper ridge going into Gowabunga, you can see it off the chair about two thirds up off the right.
