We have friends that rave about SilverStar (Shhh, keep the secret....).
I'm looking at it as we have a little one not yet on skis and I like the ski in and ski out aspect.
Our friends said it can get pretty cold there though.

SS getting busier each year, real estate selling well, accommodation getting more expensive. No colder than other resorts, when the Artic fronts come through no resort is safe.

Silverstar and Sun Peaks now have a reciprocal arrangement for season pass holders. Ski two days free at other resort.

Shame that BW and SS are still not on speaking terms.

A shared lift pass there would make much more sense. When did their reciprocal arrangement fall apart.

When Des Schumann died, there was no one to keep the peace between his two adult children. There will be plenty of other more 'business' reasons given, but basically the kids took a resort each and went their separate ways.

FWIW, drive time from SS to SP is only about 20 minutes more than SS to BW. Distance in km is greater but the drive south through the Okanagan Valley is mostly built up and slow going. Kelowna sprawls out a long way on both highways.

The dual mountain pass was discontinued for the 2012/2013 season, I had to decide between the two resorts and Silverstar won. Did the multiple resort visits years ago but a lot cheaper to just pick one.

Beerman and family booked in for SP and BW Jan 2020. Due to the deal between SP and SS, we may make a quick appearance at SS. Am keen, just have to make it happen.

Either is perfect for kids :) Our kids like the rustic feel of SS but then like all the flash amenities of BW.

Ok so we are at the very early stages of planning another Canadian adventure. Unfortunately work dictates that my travel times are close to Xmas so we are thinking 27th dec to 17th of Jan flying into Vancouver and hiring a car.

We are looking at at week at Silver star, a week at sun peaks and 5 days at whistler. Starting at Silver star then slowly moving to the bigger resorts.

As Silverstar what are the lessons or ski camps like, I’m thinking it would be great to get these done early.

What are people’s thoughts on accommodation, anything recommended, any locations to look out for? We want something with 3 beds no sofa’s closing to the village centre say 5minute walk.

In Silverstar try Silverstarstays .com. Creekside 5mins to village, ski out the front, look for Foxglove, Snowbrush or Wildwood.

If you have a look at the skiadventures website, Heather Roubilliard rents out some chalets that sound like what you are looking for. She’s an aussie expat who coordinates lessons, touring and accomodation. Worth dropping her a line.

At Silverstar I stayed at Firelight lodge in a studio room. Location was quite good, easy ski down to the silver queen lift and ski round to central resort area.

Short flat walk at night across car parking areas to the resort pubs/restaurants.
The sound insulation wasn't too good in the room I had , as it shared a door to next units kitchen.Noisy cooking some mornings.

SS runs a free mountain guide host, unfortunately starts at 10am.
I booked into 1 day of the mens ski camp program.
Was basically a 1/2 day group lesson. Full benefits would really only be obtained from going for the full number of weeks.

For kids, tube town, 10 pin bowling, ice skating, mini snowmobiles is just on the back door step of firelight lodge.

SS has one of the best snow schools in western Canada, loads of level 3 and 4 instructors.

I imagine it's pricey, but Snowbird Lodge is superbly located within steps of the village main street and is ski in/out. Just stayed there this past weekend and it is all suites with well appointed kitchens and a hot tub on the balcony. Underground parking too if you need that.

Hi there, We have skied SS, BW and Sunpeaks a lot.... can give you some tips. As others have said Silverstarstays is great for SS and can help out. You could look at using a mob like Travelplan or Sue at Ski holidays and tours, they often can get rates we can't at wholesale and then cheap wholesale lift tickets, Central reservations at the resorts is also good. I tend to do my own research but also get a quote from an agent and cherry pick my itinerary for the best rates.

Accom - we don't do the 5 star (family of 4) -need value for $$$
Silverstar - we stay at Lord Aberdeen or a condo on the Knoll.
BigWhite - Ptarmigan or this year Plaza on the ridge
    Sunpeaks - Nancy Greenes Cahility

    Ski Schools - kids only
Silverstar - Kids did full days and some 1/2 days...loved it. Great instructors although found office staff are not overly flexible when you want to shift things around on a multi pass pre-booked lesson.
BigWhite - Sensational, not a bad word to say.
Sunpeaks - Did not like !!

Ski school staff depends on the year, when I booked my granddaughters in for lessons and wanted to juggle times and classes not a problem.

Team EB is thinking of going to SS early next year. A bit of a last-minute plan but we have a bub and she will be 14 months old by February 2020. Is the childcare/daycare suitable for her age? I only saw for 18 months onward. Oh, she doesn't need to ski, just normal care while we both go skiing.
Also, we will be doing both XC and downhill. Any good accommodation option to look at?
    Cheers!

Travelplan and Mogul ski have some good package deals atm. If you want to do your own bookings then Silverstar stays are good, prices have certainly increased in the last few years, I blame the Whistler refugees. Don't know about childcare but if you contacted Silverstar once the season starts I am sure that there are plenty of Aussie kids looking for extra money.

Thanks for your replies so far! Another question about car hire. We are thinking of coming into Kelowna Airport on the way in and drive to Vancouver on the way back to do touristy stuff. Any good car hire on mountain or nearby that has reasonable rates and reliable cars? Cheers

Kelowna Airport has all the major car hire companies, with most of them having down town offices as well. You will not find car hire on the mountain. You can also try various booking agencies that are posted on the 'Driving in Canada' thread. These are a middleman for the majors, usually with good rates or all in costs.

Look up economy care rentals or Enterprise. Rent from Kelowna airport. You'll pay more though as you are dropping at a different location :(

Just remember to ask for car rental, not car hire. In nth America, "hire" refers only to employing people for work. Rental refers to short term paid use of objects.

So, my boys and I are visiting Silver Star from 12 Jan to 16 Jan (4 nights). As we have purchased season passes at Sun Peaks (next on the agenda) through Travelplan, we get 2 days of free skiing at SS then 25% off for subsequent days (probably just one given the time we arrive). We are staying at Silver Creek Lodge which I’ve been reliably informed is ski-in, ski-out. I’m renting a car at Kelowna Airport and plan to stock up on groceries before we arrive at Silver Star. Firstly, any recommendations for a grocery store? I’ve heard Vernon is the biggest town between the airport and SS? Secondly, any tips regarding the resort (areas to explore first, things to do, etc) would be appreciated. My boys (13 and 10) are superb skiers, advanced +++. I’m a reasonable intermediate who can survive black runs :p. We will be bringing our own gear (hope it fits in the Ford Escape!).

Plenty of big supermarkets in Vernon, Safeways, Canadian superstore, Save on foods etc, look them up on Google for location. Superstore and save on foods near one another and just off the road to SS.
Once you familiarize yourself with the mountain Putnam over the backside has plenty of double and single black runs. Fresh snow checkout the tree runs marked on the map.Silverwoods good place to start.

@Lady Penelope I stayed at Silver Creek Lodge for a 10 nights in 2016, it is definitely ski in and out. It is also just a short walk into the village as well. I really enjoyed my stay their and at Silver Star overall. You'll have a great time.

Thanks @KneeDeep . I remember the Save on Foods store in Kamloops: it was huge! I also recall something about being able to get 10% off with a discount card: is this still the case?

Is there a difference between the brands? happy to pay for choice and fresh food.

I noticed Canadian superstore seem well located in kamloops and vernon which will make stopping in easy!

Canada has two large supermarket groups: Sobeys and Loblaws. Safeway and IGA are owned by the Sobeys group, Superstore is Loblaws. Both have a series of other brands they use. The third player nationally is Walmart, but their supermarket choices are relatively few, since they focus on high volume products only. In BC, there is the Pattison Group with its SaveOn Foods and Overwaitea stores, equivalent size and range to Safeway and Superstore. Very few truly independent supermarkets anymore.

Discounts still on offer, you can either join up or just ask the checkout operator to scan a visitor card for you. If you join you also get points that can be used for further discounts. Worthwhile if you are there for a long time or coming back each year.

Yay, just confirmed our flights. We will be at SS from 27 Jan to 13 Feb.
Now, the most important question for a Melbournite - could you get a good cuppa latte on the mountain? Double shots preferred at lunchtime please.

Sounds like most have your q's covered here...... I can suggest Paradise Camp for morning Tea....sensational place, great prices and cinnamon scrolls to die for (like eating a half loaf of bread, so share). Staff are generally so friendly and will remember you from day to day :) For the advanced skier...head over the back, way less traffic and very steep fun runs.... it does stay in the shade though so can be on the coolish side :)

Bugaboo bakery maybe, I just drink long black. Very hard to get a decent coffee in Canada.

Bugaboo would be the first place to try. Town Hall has a machine but who knows who will be operating it.

I had one of the cinnamon rolls from the on mountain place at Sun Peaks whose name escapes me. Large enough to feed an entire family for a day

That'd be Sunburst lodge. Cinnamon buns the size of a small horse. A couple of our crew are coeliac and we've been banned from going in there as a family at morning tea time.
The smell of those buns makes them seriously consider breaking the gluten free thing and ride out the consequences.

I thought there would be decent coffee considering the number of Aussies being in Canada. :p
