Bloody hell. Currently 12 degrees in Geelong with an apparent temp of 9. Time to leave the shed and go inside. Cold.
Negative temps at all the Victorian resorts. Snowing at Falls and Baw Baw. Has snowed in Tasmania and at the Victorian resorts. And by some reports I have heard, there has been some proper falls, up to 10cm. Usually we see these events in May, not February. Season 2017 starts here!!!
Was sent this from my mate who lives in Terrey Hills. (my guess is he's had them in his freezer overnight and that's why they're so white) and this is what fell at my place (about 15 minutes down the road)
No MTB today Snowed inThredbo village for a short time in the middle of the night, lotsa rain too. Just blowing and cold now.
All those playing the game "skis on for as many months of the year in aus" here is the feb opportunity you may not have counted on.
Going for an overnight low of 11c here in Penrith. Noice. It also means that we could conceivably record the highest (also an all time record) and lowest Feb temps on record in the same month. That would surely be a significant outlier when it comes to temp records.
About 17.5 deg in Melb max of 20degC expected.sure had some rain over last 24hrs. Bears poking noses outside now about to finish table 19... Very good time for rain around Melb to knock down the fire season..not sure how much rain received in Wang/Bright areas but this is helping to keep the CFA out of their trucks which is a good thing... Who's keeping track of the no of total fire ban days and those with catastrophic fire warnings....fortunately not too many prolonged unbroken spells of 40degC.
BOM obs show Wangaratta has had stuff all rain from this system..like 2.5mm. So we stand corrected with our over enthusiastic response....don't stand those fire towers down just yet....the NE still remains dry obviously...
Falls Ck notched up only about 8mm.with this system to date....white stuff may be some what misleading when considering fuel moisture in surrounding forest areas...and Benalla seemed to have scored about 4mm.
Mate i'm not dragging trees across to my neighbours, it's hard enough work dragging them to the piles we have at the moment. I was so tempted to let a few go yesterday, there were enough people running wood fires (myself included) that no one would have noticed.
Overnight low of 3c at my machinery shed , high of 15c. I am so liking this "new summer" weather. 7mm of rain overnight.
As far SE Aus & Tas go; models are going for a solid ridging trend over the next couple of weeks for Southern States, then back into some good frontal systems though mid-march, I think. The polar vortex remains weak into the end of Feb so I do like the nodal movement around the caps, in theory meaning more frontal action once we see the ridging break down. Outside of some heating on the 28th through SA/VIC, Summer's over IMO.
I am inclined to think it's Southern origins/feed over some very warm SST regions in the Souther Ocean aided to a very moist system here. Mind you, the winds were kind enough to skirt Tassie and lessen any impact of shadowing for Vicco...
During weak vortex events anomalies can descend from the upper stratosphere to the surface. The very cold air within the polar vortex descended down from 10 hPa/mb. over the past few weeks.
Amen to this. Has been the saviour of several events over the past few Oz , or particularly NSW resort winters .
First tracks of Australia's first snowfall in 2017 went a little like this... (not as you had thought).
