Very few examples of good value ski in ski out places in Japan or most places for that matter. If you really want that you need to be prepared to pay quite a bit more. In most cases I find it just isn't worth it. A short walk or shuttle bus trip is almost always much better value.

A few I can think of
    - Ichinose at Shiga Kogen only requires a short walk to lift and can almost ski back to. A few other location at Shiga would also qualify.
    - Used to stay at a pension in Kitanomine at Furano, that was a short walk to lift and almost ski back to. That pension is no longer there though.
    - Onsen resort hotel in Amihari
    - Prince hotel in Naeba
    - Resort hotel at Hakkoda only required short walk
    - Milky House at Niseko Annupuri. short walk to lift, mostly ski back. That was back in the 90's though, before the invasion. Don't know if it is still there.

Second this. Chalet Shiga in Ichinose (Shiga Kogen) was one where you literally walked just across the road then on with the skis and off you go! We could ski almost all the way back, too. I can attest to village accommodation in Sun Peaks, too, but that isn’t in Japan ;)

Yeah Shiga Kogen would probably have the most examples of budget hotels and pensions of this type. I did also notice a couple from my one visit to Akakura Onsen. So you will most likely get this type of thing in the old school Japanese ski areas like these. Zao Onsen would be another example.
In contrast many of the bubble era resorts had big and generally more expensive hotels directly at the base and a pension village a km or two away eg. Appi, Tomamu. And in the very new ones being bought up by Asian interests it is all about luxury base accommodation at significant cost.

Chalet Madarao. They groom daily to across the road. You can watch them whilst having breakfast.

Gran Deco. Beautiful hotel and French Restaurant. Great deals in April.
Lots of the resorts where the hotel is almost all that is there.

Akakura Onsen is fine for the 2 Akakura resorts but still a shuttle to the others. Kind of pointless IMO.

Milkey is still there, but would not call it ski in these days.

And in Shiga there are ski in and some ski out Hotels. (but don't tell anybody).
This is the ultimate ski out hotel however ski in is a bit difficult.

Ive stayed in ski in/out at Shiga. Was nice to cruise back at lunch and the end of the day but a pain in the ass when strolling back up the slope after an evening at an izakaya. :) Maybe I should have taken the long way round via the road. Was years ago so cant recall where but I think somewhere near Ichinose Family????

Most places in Grand Hirafu are ski-in but few are ski-out....

Niseko in general has a number of ski-in/ski-out hotels (think Hilton, adjacent to family quad in Grand Hirafu and the new Hanozono hotels) you'll pay of course

Cheers Hyst, having done Hakuba last winter, I’d be keen to try something quite different next time.
Shiga (Ishinose) would be he most obvious candidate - and for Melbourne (no direct flights to Sapporo?)
    - anything from Tokyo is easier and cheaper than Hokkaido.

But forgetting cost, travel time and interchange faffing, Hokkaido would be awesome for the POW and terrain (Alpine bowls & glades) aspects. Something the Hakuba resorts (inbound) didn’t have quite as much of as I’d hoped.

Looks like I have at least another year and qtr to plan - (sadly) judging by current Covid nos?

Yes Cheers, I know it’s in the hundreds. I am v slowly researching. I guess for me, the key is to find a cluster of areas that offer a range of runs/experiences. Hakuba offered that, plus our club had a lodge lease that was too good a deal to pass up. That’s gone now so the options have opened.

I’d love to rent a car and cover a few resorts over 2-3 weeks (say up to Appi or maybe Hokkaido to access touring areas as well) but it looks a tad expensive travelling solo? Maybe a cheaper, older Subbie higher might change that? As some here do in NZ (as opposed to Avis, Budget?)

    Twelve months to Google? ;)

NZ next year (with vaccine done) looks to be the next OS spot for me...?

A number of places we've stayed at in Japan have been ski in/ski out or walk across a road, and the prices have often been around $200 a night or less for our family of four.

    Hotel MOC - Myoko Kogen
    Annex Aburaya - Madarao
    Cupid Valley cabins
    Naeba Prince Resort - Naeba
    Village Alpha - Tomamu
    Schanze Nozawa

That could be an insult to Funk?

Speaking of F-Unky places in Japan, the Prince at Naeba is pretty easy to wizz straight up to the doors. Better at night that place as well.

Wow - that report is very generous... I worked there for a while and their attitude towards off piste must have changed a lot since I was there (but that was a long time ago...) You would want to pick a couple of good days, as as the report says, it is small and you could get bored fairly quickly. On the plus side - I have had one of my best powder skiing days there and I skied on the only black run they had, but I had that run to myself all day. Started on one side and by the time I finished moving across, my initial tracks were covered.

Ski in and out I've stayed in when in Japan:
    Hotel Appi
    Risonnare Tomamu
    Rusutsu Tower (kind of)
    Ski out and almost in:
Wadanao, Hakuba with access to the Sakka area of Happo. However I'm sure it's now discouraged to ski on the road to access the Sakka area.

Joetsu Kokusai is such a fun family resort. Lovely branch line train from Yuzawa and 4 very distinct areas to ski. Lots of horizontal slow romance lifts to get you around though.
