interesting topic I have read through over on TGR. https://www.tetongravity.com/forums...teresting-person-you-shared-a-lift-with/page7 All about interesting people folks have shared a chair ride with, from pros to celebs to just interesting people. Anyone got a good story to tell?
My fav was a korean girl I shared a quad with. She had a giggling fit for the first half building up the courage to say hello. It was cool.
Almost every tbar I share, is with someone from the northern beaches. No cool stories. TGR is trash, btw.
Early chairs, shared with two guys, and a lady, all at least in their mid sixties. One of them asks me if I happen to be a policeman. I say no. He says, mind if we spark one up? I say go for it. They offer it to me, I think, its been a while, but this is so surreal, I partake. The snowflakes are drifting down heavy, with no wind. It was an amazing first run.
Very true, it can be offensive to others, just like ciggies, but the snow was falling so heavy, it probably wasnt being shared.
My first day skiing Deer Valley as an employee, I was in civvies before I started working, could have been opening day, I met this lovely but very serious lady, turns out she used to be a prosecutor in Chicago and put half the mob away. Her and her husband took lots of lessons so I ended up teaching them a few tines.
Was sharing Kosi chair with a French couple and a patroller all nattering away in French . Ah Frogs all .Then they must have asked him where he lived and in the broadest Aussie accent the patroller said ‘ nah I’m livin in Berridale ‘ .
Definitely been the case this year, with a focus on North Curly - one time neighbours a few doors up. Other than that a lovely French girl who happened to be best mates with the girl who I hired to guide me round 3 Vallées earlier in the year and came to Perisher on my indirect recommendation!
Had a canadian ( or seppo ) bloke jump on Calf T with me single one arvo ...full blizz. think he's sparked several previously. he was wired for sound , singing his heart out oblivious to the outside world. i headed up the Cow T single, classic powder lap down the not so obvious. back on calf t (freedom was shut) and the dude is back on the T telling me how good was that etc. unknowing to me had shadowed me. he stuck with me for about an hour or so ( out with the fairies ) sing backman turner over drive , stones , eagles. even poached aone of my tree lines from me ! crew who saw me asked the question about his "relaxed disposition " with raised eyebrows surreal dude, surreal arvo , a lot of fun ....will never forget
Jackson Hole Sublette quad. About a 10 min ride. My kids are on the chair in front. 4 people. I'm on the left. 40-something couple in the middle, guy on right in worn ski gear who looks like Jesus. The couple were from middle America somewhere, very chatty and nice who tried to engage Jesus in some happy "So where have you been skiing today!" banter. Jesus just stares back at them. Uncomfortable silence. Then he points down to a spot near one of the lift towers and says in a monotone "That's where I buried the bodies". I laugh. No-one else does. Lift ends. The couple quickly ski off. I go over to Jesus as he's chuckling away to himself. We'd both read the TGR thread about spicing up a lift ride - farting, weed, jokes etc. "That's where I buried the bodies" was a suggestion. He had always wanted to try it.
Opposite..........shared a lift with a local Kiwi last month. I didn't get a word in after our hello's etc. Told me he'd just had a drink stop (coffee)............his 7th double shot espresso for the day!!!!!!!!! In his defence, was close to quit'n time.
Mt P, snowing, empty hill, went up with a much older guy, ‘ bout as old as I am now come to think of it, who skied slowly and stiffly back down. Shared a few lift rides where he told me that just after he retired he broke his neck in a bike accident, was told he would never ski again, and it took seven years hard work to get to where he was. Permanent tingling through one leg and his groin, pain killers to get to sleep each night. I learned a lot following him slowly down Towers in a semi white out.
2017 early one midweek morning jumped on the QE with a group of 3 , 2 girls and a guy in their late teens early 20's by the look of them. They started to chat to each other using Suomi (Finnish) language. So I listened but pretended not to understand , you know looking everywhere else but at them. Anyway just before mid station I turned to them and asked them in perfect Suomi ( being my native language) if they were getting off at mid station or going to the top. Jaws dropped , one of the girls faces went bright red while the other girl burst out laughing and the guy looked like he wanted to jump off the lift right there. He and the now red faced girl had been discussing what they were going to do to each other that night. We continued up to the top chatting away in Suomi , much apologies from the amorous youngsters. Turns out they came from Lahti and know a niece of mine. We spent the next week skiing together until they left for NZ.
Great story, but as Finland (along with their little sister Estonia) has the hardest language for English speakers to learn, I assume Finnish speakers think they're fairly safe on the other side of the world. Sadly, I couldn't think of a way to use the only Finnish word I know in this post. Perkele !
I was on a chair in Hakuba, sat in between 2 ladies, so we all introduced ourselves. One lady tells me she works for the Federal Police in Canberra. The other one chips in "really? I work for the Federal Police in Sydney!"
Nothing, I rejoice in it! (Besides, I've been waiting for the opportunity to use 'epicaricacy', ever since you accused me of being a pilkunnussija, years ago)
when they were ordered to tail me, I'm surprised they crossed into Foreign territory. Arent they supposed to handball to ASIO?
ASIO is mostly threats to domestic security ASIS is mostly foreign threats to Australian security ASD is signals and internet intelligence ACIC (Australian Criminal Intel Commission) is the outfit that targets big drug operations (and other organised crime) ONA assesses information from these and a dozen other spook outfits to provide big picture advice to the government
Last December I shared a ride to the top of Lake Louise with about half of the womens world cup field, including Ms Vonn, Shiffrin et al. Not actually a chairlift ride though, because a resort-wide power outage resulted in all athletes, coaches, techs, race workers and officials being towed up in groups of 30 behind groomers.
I experienced similar many years ago when the lift out of Sun Valley broke down at the end of the day Everyone was (not) looking forward to the walk out, when a fleet of skidoos appeared over the horizon trailing ropes It was close to the most fun for the day!
I gotta agree here, pretty much everyone I meet skiing is white bread from a well-to-do suburb of Sydney or Melbourne with a nice life...In fact, the most interesting aussie skiers I meet, all seem to be from this forum! Shine on you crazy diamonds. In contrast, rock climbing seems to attract proper weirdos more than any other sporting community I've been a part of.
I shared a lift at Hotham with a couple who had the loveliest wooden skis. I enquired about them. Turned out they ran their own business making them! Also shared a lift at Buller with the parents of an Aussie pro cycler who was racing for a team out of the US, but I can't remember who.
I’ve shared more lifts with @PiniPowPow’s parents than with him!! Have met a range of intersting folks. The Dopplemayer guy from Jindy. The ex-snowboard speed world champ from Dalgety (he had been laying sick rail to rail craves earlier) Quite a few internationals which always surprises me!
What about this guy: I've seen these backward ski guys with twirling streamers both in NZ and Japan... Unfortunately not ridden a lift with one. Lift rides with seasonnaires always interesting - hearing about golden mattress awards etc... Rode the chair with some sicko snowboarders at Hotham once...
Classic recent story was my mogul skier catches t-bar with some random. Stars chatting and the guy mentions he is going to Japan, staying at Madarao. Happens to be one of my guests. Sent me a lovely pic of him and my mogul skier on the t-bar. Didn't some people catch a lift (or have a run in in the lift queue) with Ernie Dingo at Charlotte Pass?
I know a bloke who had a run in with Ernie Dingo at a baggage carousel. Apparently he didn't appreciate hearing "A Dingo's got my luggage"
