    Hi guys,

Planning a trip to Nesiko this December.

For those who has done car rental, do I need to rent a all wheel drive car like a Subaru as transportation?

    Thanks in advance

Nearly all rental cars in Hokkaido are 4wd.

    * snow tyres by default worth a mention.

I've rented a front wheel drive Honda CR-V with snow tyres from Peak Niseko and had no dramas. Drove from Niseko to Rusutsu, up near Kamui links and back via Kiroro, Kokusai and Teine.

Our accomodation has a steep driveway entry to the carport in deep snow conditions, so this trip going 4WD. Most generic rental car booking sites don't seem to specify clearly whether a car is 4WD - or has an option. I've gone with JR where for an extra Y1,650/day you can specify a 4WD version of a vehicle, see https://www.jrh-rentacar.jp/phpapp/english_web/index.php

I thought I saw on the forums here (searched all insurance threads) that there is car rental insurance you can only purchase once you arrive in Japan. This is cheaper than the fee they charge you at the rental company. Does that ring a bell to anyone here?

Not that I'm aware of. Most travel insurance will cover the rental car excess so you can go for standard minimum via the rental car insurance policy.
