Even though Double Trouble is marked as a double-black diamond, is it really that steep/rocky? Or is it because you have to traverse and go through trees? Why does it have a double-black rating? Just wondering how fast or how risky it is to go it. Has anyone been on it? If you have any pics please post.

Yes. I couldn't ski it, as I don't ski well. Depends on snow. Ice, forget it. Slush, broken up crud, difficult. Faces north, lots of sun, meltage. Good after a storm, I hear.

But worth it in good conditions.

Took this while riding the T at Guthega, looking across. August 2012.

yes, it has some nice bumps to launch off on the way down.
I recommend hiking straight past the drop point, to the right of that pic. You actually need to hike down hill about 30m but the tree runs on that side are some of the best in the area.

another great way to get out into that area is to hike up the hill directly above top station. You can go from front valley to guthega in 1 run.

    Hi,

The hardest think about double trouble is hiking up the hill from pleasant valley quad! If you take the easy options and follow the trail markers it is pretty easy. If you follow the trail there is nothing steeper than a mid blue run. At the end it does get tight between trees, but it is not steep.

I would have no hesitation taking an intermediate along, as long as I was showing the way. If you are capable of skiing out wide on ungroomed eyre bowl or on international, you can definitely handle double trouble.

The thing is, if you lose your way you can end up in some pretty tight trees and a creek to cross (depending on snow depth), which is why it is better to go with someone who knows the way. The top half of the run is marked with conventional trail markers. Once it gets down in the trees they usually have orange or pink tape stuck on trees every 20m or so.

For all the harder stuff in that bowl in the pics you have to climb up the hill first.

To be honest I think the reason it has a double black rating is partly because it is difficult for ski patrol to get to and cover properly. It is actually a big area, and there are many ways you can go etc. I think patrol doesn't want too many people going in there.

Can remember a few seasons back being with an instructor that took us off the back of Mt P, dropped a little and then traversed/ skied around the back of back P somewhere about contours 1960 -1940 and came out onto the final parts of double trouble. Often looked at doing it again but it was a bit sketchy in parts - wants a good cover but it was a bit of an adventure and no hiking to get up back P. needs somebody who is familiar with the area as there is a dead end gully if you drop too low too soon and as said the trees can be quite thick with a creek awaiting.

I think it's best if on the traverse you go a bit more skiers right. It opens up a bit less tracked and more fall line skiing through the trees. I don't think it's great but if there's snow it's a good change up every few days. Good for upper intermediate and above provided they're happy skiing off groomed trails.

the problem with double trouble is the effort. resort skiing is about no effort. if you are going to actually do some work there is far better to be had back country.

Farm creek is where you don't want to be. Its either a hike out of that gully to get back towards Double trouble or if you keep bush bashing it would be a bloody long hike back to the Burning Log.
You need to stay above the head of Farm creek on the traverse across to double trouble.

Creek is very very bad. I actually tried route C many moons ago. Don't.

A and B are options, to get from top of Quad to DT. But be careful. Snow is often wind scoured, packed icy and not worth the grief.

This area is out of the way. It is also not patrolled. AFAIK.

Can you expand on this a little . ?I've got on the perisher bandwagon this year after hangin out at Thredbo for a while .a mate and I were checking out your option last weekend and were thinking climb to the top and follow the ridge but not sure what next ..is it ok to go a bit left of the ridge staying on the south facing side and swinging back over the ridge across the creek and down to the bottom of the t bar .

In a word yes. If you stay hard right you will end up at double trouble, too far left and you hit farm creek, everything in between is fair game. Its not very steep and it can be terribly wind scoured up the top but it is my fav area at perisher and Im only talking about it cause I wont be riding at perisher anymore ;-)

Yeah but I didnt film all the way from the top as the wind had stripped the fresh snow off so it was boiler plate.

There was good cover, but that top section gets hammered by wind and the fresh that had fallenwas blown into patches. Fresh then ice etc.
If you go there you will see what I mean

Devils playground has only been officially "open" a couple of times in the last 15 years. It needs very good snow cover. You head to the far left of north p, then head down through quite steep rocks and trees and cross the summer road. Then it is pretty mellow and cruisy down and accross the creek to end up at the ridge chair. It's fun when there is truly enough snow cover. If the cover is not enough then there is lots of rock hopping and bush bashing and you can end up having to cross a creek.

I think we both felt violated after that run in August 2012.

Core shots to the base were the result of trying to make the run out section past the access road to get out at the Ridge chair.

    This.

Would have only 'officially' opened in the big seasons of 2000 and 2004 IMO.

Needs a BIG season with lots of low level dumps to fill in the bottom section but often there is enough cover in a reasonable season to make it to the access road and then you follow that until you hit the run to end up at the bottom of Ridge chair, or make the trek back to North P T-bar.

The other issue is as it faces virtually directly north, the snow quality tends to be optimum for very short periods of time so your window of opportunity to get it with primo conditions is small (ideally first thing in the morning when it's coldest).

That said, I have experienced that 'face' (is it 'North Face?') with great snow in 2000, 2004 and 2014.

Yup, sure was. First time down there for me. The top was fun. The middle was tricky in the gloop, and the bottom was fun again, although you have to enjoy skiing ice-cream to get a smile out of it.

That's a worry in late July.
Noticed some in PV trees a week back too. Soon freezes again.
