Just looking at a cheeky ski weekend and it’s looking close to $1,000 for two nights in Jindy!! That’s crazy.

It’s only this year I’m looking to go because I want to take my son down. I’m thinking he can just skip a few months...

    Its worse this year
It was only a few years ago the average room price in Jindy was $250 a night.
    Seems to be $450 now.

the cost is the main reason we hardly ski in Australia anymore. It's very unfortunate. Tam is a social skier and will come along when something is organised, which is fine. I've gotten more into Motorcycling and doing Track Days, which is something I can do on a monthly basis year round. It's not a move away from skiing, but more a recognition of bang for buck. NZ/Japan/ and a well thought out USA or European trip, every other year or so, offers far better bang for skiing buck in my opinion. But not everyone can just do that.

Budgie, I realise it's a vastly different proposition for you just grab the boy and flit off for a couple of weeks, particularly overseas.

YEP......Last year I looked at taking myself and the kids skiing for a week during school holidays and the prices scared me away. It actually worked out cheaper to go to Japan for a week !!

If you want to ski in Australia cheaply, you need to make an investment to reduce your costs.
    Accomodation being the obvious one.
Passes etc are pretty cheap really.

Cost stopped us doing our traditional weeks worth here many years ago, we then swapped to 4 day weekends then down to 2 day weekends. Now we don't even do day trips in Aus. We save the $$$ for a month long OS trip. I know that's not an easy thing for others but works well for our situation.

If you can work at it and can keep costs down at least do day trips with the kids it's well worth it I think :)

Agreed. Its ridiculously bad value here with snow quality/accomodation quality vs O/S. Its half as good for twice the price. I used to be a regular season pass holder but now find it hard to justify the cost. NZ is definitely attractive these days cause even if the snow isn't always much better than Australia, the accomodation at least is reasonable and often pretty high quality. The scenery can't be beaten either......I don't see things getting much better here as season lengths continue to shorten and temps become more fickle to preserving snow.

Not great for small kids obviously but If I'm just heading down with a mate then we go the car camping path. Nothing to pack up in the morning and comfortable enough for a weekend trip.

It is what it is I suppose...
Personally I’ve always loved hitting up Thredbo, the social aspect of catching up with friends and getting out there on dodgy snow between the Aussie Snowgums, with the occasional awesome ski day. Despite the premium cost.

But it gets harder every year to justify the spend and the struggle to find accomodation.

Oh that reminds me, what is with the half finished hotel in Jindy. The one next to Mario's mineshaft (or whatever it is now). I stayed there a few years ago and it appears as though the top level never got built. Inside there are stairs that go up but a met with a slab and from outside the roof appears as though they started the supports for the next floor then stopped.

About kids in the car. We have a van and a ute. When car sleeps are on its usually in the van.

Mrs tells blowette they are going to Sydney for the weekend. I needed the van so mrs had to take the ute. Blowette says to mrs - i guess we'll just be sleeping in the ute then? Not one bit concerned about the prospect. But - they slept at grandmas place instead. Bloody luxury.

And once you get a van with dark windows you've got to live with the bad rep that gets you.

One day i picked blowette up from school. No kiddie seat in the van so i told her to walk home and i would supervise from the van. Picture van driving behind 5 year old stopping to talk every now and then. One member of the public looked very concerned - which was good to see.

I will probably never stop skiing Australia. It's the connection, it's snow, regardless of where it is. I am usually happy to ski anything from rockhopping slopes to deep powder, which you can still occasionally ski here. I am more than happy for people to start skiing OS, whatever suits the individual/family, more room for me too .

Midweek is always the right time to go. A good June and September help too.

$1,000 will get you a weeks accom and lift passes, with some change left over for beer in Japan/North America. Skiing in Aus is crazy expensive, and it just keeps going up. But it's classic supply and demand, as more middle class Australians chose to experience snow the demand for accom will keep prices high.

Every year I tell myself I won't ski Aus and save the $$ for an overseas trip, but every year I end up skiing at least a few days. There is something pretty special about sliding through Gum Trees!
