Ahhhh, found one!
Combe Saulire, missing 3 Vs.
A bit of overnight r**n packed the snow down, leaving the lower areas firm and fast. Up high was still pretty good. I took a tour over to Les Menuires.......found another carpark for @DidSurfNowSki ......
Visually stunning and so HUGE!
Just had to share one more shot from today, just because it’s pretty. Zoom in on a big screen and it’s just sensational.
Looking down on Plan Des Mains and Mt Vallon uploads.
This morning was all about Val Thorens.
The playing surface was pretty solid on the groomers and crusty/grabby off piste, but it was still great fun hurtling down the long runs and getting a real leg-burn going. I must say, I was very comfortable with the layout of VT. I can see why a lot of people would choose it as their base in Les Trois Vallees.
A couple of different lift options in Val Thorens.
The Funitel Peclet seats about 20 people
and this little cluster is standing room only but would hold heaps of people, if there was anyone using it (which there wasn’t when I got on at about midday).
i was expecting today to be really busy, being a Saturday and all. It wasn’t. I encountered no queues anywhere, even back in Meribel.
After a sunny start to the day, clouds rolled in and it started to drizzle around 1pm. Expected to turn to snow tonight.
Missing the short haul T bars ??
I remember the first time I caught that Funitel, I felt like I was in the Milennium Falcon making the jump to hyperspace.
Not at all! The runs are so long, I need every bit of chair-time I can get for recovery!
Hope you're not sipping lattes
Or glasses of Pino.
The local red is quite acceptable!
R**ning this morning and forecast to do so all day. +2 degrees and foggy up top.
Rest Day declared!
On a lighter note, I’ve been walking past this thing every day.......haven’t seen a Dingo yet.
(No, that’s not me up in the air!)
Playing surface quite solid after a day of airborne moisture.
I went for a tour through Meribel Centre and down to Saint Martin (1450m). The lower I got, the scrappier the surface. St Martin is small, kinda cute, and would probably be an economic option for a 3V base. It’s only a lift ride or two to get up high and into the real action.
It does have its very own magic carpet!
How did you go on the air bag
Pretty sure @Snorkler spent a season at St Martin
I went around it !
8:30am here and snowing heavily!
Be sure to make a special dinner here:
And here if you really want to splurge.
Thanks for the suggestions. I’m traveling solo this trip and not overdoing the dining side of things. Keeping it simple!
Blizzard day today! Most of the big lifts closed.
Visibility low, winds strong.
I went out for a few hours. A few cents of fresh getting scraped off a rock hard base. Snowing heavily, so tomorrow should be....epic!
Some people finding it hard to work out which way to go!
Building up on the balcony again. Glad I’m staying here.....
...and not here!
Someone is turning on the weather to make you feel at home.
Hope the Epic day evenuates for you
Glorious morning after yesterdays blizzard.
-7, so the groomers were rock hard on the steeps. Off piste was generally sensational but there was lots not accessible because of lifts being closed. De-icing, avi risk, all the usuals.
The biggest problem with all the fresh available, combined with lift closures, was......
looks like it must be french school hols
Na - its just the Ridge crew come over to keep Normo company
Not til next week. I think they just came from everywhere, because “powder!”
Back in Courchevel this morning. Hazy day, fast track and lots of room to move.
No lift line here.......
I think all that talk about big queues yesterday was just a lot of.....
Oh..... and I did find the local equivalent of a T- Bar .........
and guess what? .......(be still, my beating heart) even the singles can go up double!
Or the doubles can go up single!
How good is that!
You could do 8’s on the way up...could be fun?
Like a Maypole?
Are they the famous nut crackers, where your groin arrives at the top while you only half way up?
Best lifts in the world. Love the duplex ones, you can have a race.
Whenever I'm on a poma in France I text a pic to @Vermillion - makes him more jealous than a foot of fresh.
Rode a cracking nut cracker in Flaine the other day. It lifts you about a foot off the ground as it engages. Everyone brings the laughs for their first attempt at it.
Rode one of those in Montgenevre that used to have a poma about a km long, slow as which could be bearable till it crested a ridge and went downhill for about 50 metres. Snow ploughs to stop the nut cracker effect on a down slope was a true eye watering experience
Fortunately it was a very cold day, so I wasn’t too “inconvenienced”
It’s a very long haul though!
Final day of skiing the 3 Valleys today. It’s an amazing place. I got to most areas at some time in my two weeks here but there’s no way I rode every lift.
The place is just massive, the infrastructure is incredible and the snow has been plentiful.
I’m happy with where I chose to stay (Meribel
Mottaret) because it is so central, but if I was coming back for just a few days, I’d give Courchevel a go. The terrain there is just immense ( and good fun!)
Last few pics.....
