Heading down this weekend to the Dalgety Wine and Food Festival. It's going to be cold overnight - down to -4 Friday night, but that's not been unusual this year. 5th trip this year, 5th time I have arrive to -3 or below as we pull in at 11pm (if it comes off that is). It's enough to freeze my undies on the way back from the Pub again. (note to self - avoid barb wire fence in pitch black attempting to cross road, playground and avoid falling in snowy river after schooners of amber gold)

At least it will be warm sunny days. The horse will like that !

My last trip to the mountains was from one extreme to the other. Was in the last week of september. Was 35 degrees in sydney when i left and i arrived in jindy 4.5 hours later to snow. Real shock to the system. It wasn't to good trying to set up the swag in shorts and t-shirt thats for sure.

There's been hail and sleet at PB today. The wet bulb temp is continually dropping but looking at the radars it doesn't look like there is much more moisture coming across to bring any snow today.

    Wednesday on the other hand...

Cold - man, try taking a dump in long grass (outside National Park and an emergency) at 3am at about minus 5! And....who gets back to sleep after that!

It just started hailing in Jindy. Tiny little stones, but it's hail none the less.

The Tasmanian forecast is :" snow possibly to low levels" on Wednesday morning. That usually means less than 300m.

With an overnight min of 5 in Hobart that suggests snow falling on the highest suburbs. Mt Nelson, Fern Tree.

If snow settles at or below 300m on Wednesday morning it's likely to be a record breaker for this time of year.

11.6C is the all time min max for melbourne in november, we could go close to that in the subs on wednesday.

I thought 7 degrees / 1000m. Splitting hairs i know, but thats what the difference between rain and snow is here.

I agree that 15 looks ambitious for wednesday. Although in the city today you could feel the heat off the land (UHI) and the cold in the air. Was weird.

Lapse rates can be very complex with systems such as this one.

mr: In a day or two maybe. :p

VSG: Difference aspect, facing and altitude at LM. Hopefully Kelly can take a few shots for us.

Hmm _slightly_ windy up there now too, 58 knots with gusts of 129 knots. Wheres an icon of a smiley being blown away when you need one?

If there's ANY moisture associated with the front stretching into the Nth Tablelands, a snow chase from Armidale early Thursday morning is on. Pt Lookout (1657m asl) should be the goods :woohoo:
Crazy stuff for this time of year (stretching that far north).

And the wind chill was -24.8°C [IMG]
However, there is no evidence of such winds affecting other alpine areas in vic since 8am.........

    No doubt it's an error.
239km/h winds would peel building structures from they're foundations.
There not even an Alpine wind warning, which is typically issued at 80km/h winds.

    Hey Mr V

Maybe I should give Dalgety a miss and come skiing in your backyard - fire up that water pistol you have made, and let's slide...Anyone up for +40cm's to be beat 1957 ! Still looks a little too dry of an air mass for that.(NSW speaking of course)

Oh - Pints are for people who enjoy warm beer too. That's what you get as the last mouthfulls. Schooners (425ml) are just right !

man i get up waaay too early on my holidays for stuff like this :p

there be some cms on all of the VIC resorts, and baw baw looks like having definately enough to ski on by this arvo, if not now already.

smallish band coming through melb now that will add close to 5cms at this rate, but cool those ranges down so i can go snow chasing!

LOL at snow chasing. I think I have the same issue, few months back I got up early and drove to Thomson Dam and back (Moe), still got to work early! If I had the day off today it would be hard to pick between Mt Tassie or going north (either Baw Baw, or Mt St G).

Blah, if only I had the day off!

Looks like Selwyn has copped as much as it did all winter!

No prefrontal in this, temps drop THEN it precipitates unlike everything we got in the winter :tany:
