Wear very warm socks. And have a spare pair of socks & shoes in the car.
I've been extremely happy with the Northern Lites.
Since the car crash I've used them in heavy deep snow on the Overland Track, and scrubby/rocky sections from Brocks Road/Magdala and Mt Howitt. They are the lightest snowshoes on the market (makes a BIG difference when on them for 8 hours a day and sinking in knee deep porridge between button grass).
The Perisher Nordic ski trails at present would be totally amazing to XC ski on at present.
In a kinder more sane universe I would be skiing on them right now !!!
I wish I learned to XC ski 3 years before I took It up. I did 3 white seasons on snow shoes learning about snow camping and winter mountaineering. Those were very useful lessons on snow survival .
However learning to XC ski is something I now I wished I had taken up 15 years or more earlier.
Snow shoes on this fresh dry deep snow?.
It is a fecking travesty!.
Find a different bunch of people who are taking on the easy XC ski trails at Perisher on XC skis. The skills you learn will be transferrable to split boarding because that is the skiing you have when you are not skiing on the way to snow boarding.
IMHO Tubbs snow shoes are shite. MSR make the best ones but I used my MSR snow shoes once for 1 km , last season in 2019 in order to haul some heavy kit and fire wood into the snow camping camp site from the car at Lake Catani at Mt. Buffalo.
I absolutely hated them. I could not believe how much they sucked!!.I had forgotten what being chained to the Earth like an anchor in decent snow was like esp.
when you can just glide and cruise along on Pattern based XC skis.
@Jarryboy swears by the verts!
Long time snowshoer, first time caller. wasn’t aware that snowshoes could go downhill, first time for everything I guess.
Verts for life
