Yeah I’d hate to live South Island New Zealand at the bottom of some of the best touring in the Southern Hemisphere haha,
I’ve skied Soho Basin the last two years and really love it although I was just touring not cat skiing.

It's a cold hole in the winter and you're 20 minutes away from the lake in summer.

Sounds like 3 years before lifted access in there. Plenty of time for TC to gouge the punters some more;)
For those who've skied both how does it compare to TC including shutes summit etc? Wondering how TCs claim of terrain supremacy will hold up, from the little Ive seen there's no real gnar in soho basin to match the hike to stuff at TC, just curious, not in a hurry to kill myself which would be the likely outcome!

It’s bloody amazing, but to be honest what makes it so good is that it’s not lift Access.
I’ve toured in there a few times and love it.
It is a huge area with a mix of bowls and a large boulder area, no chutes really.

There’s nothing gnar. The most interesting terrain is small steep area on the far edge of soho basin that finishes up close to the day lodge. It’s a little like the steep section lookers left near the bottom of saddle lift.

Advantage of soho is south aspect (not sun affected) nice intermediate / dark blue terrain.

TC will still hold the terrain crown for a commercial resort.

This also reminds me how much the ski areas overstate their numbers when it comes to skiable area.

This, With lifts its no different to cardrona, just more of the same.

They better build car parks and a whole heap of snowmaking dams because there is **** all water up there...

Cardrona claim an area currently of 345 ha. I can't map out more than about 215 ha (which is not heaps more than Coronet Peak). They claim that with Soho, their new area will be 900 odd ha. They're dreaming.

That is pretty much the total operational area of Cardrona, almost all of it is skiable (if you are fine with being bored shitless)

    TC is always tasty though

    Soho is pleasant touring now.

I had an interesting conversation with a hard shredding snowboarder (who come outrageously close to qualifying for the FWT a few years ago) after their first time riding at Remarks (for a comp). It was basically "holy shit, that place is underrated for big mountain terrain, why haven't I been there before?!".

Their local hill is Temple Basin, so they know what they're talking about. Temple is ****ing ridiculous. You can't really ski there if you don't want to rip big lines.

    This,
The other problem is if they think that by doubling the ski area it will double the people they better fix the road because in the afternoon melt it can be insanely muddy and bloody dangerous for those not used to driving off road, With more people the road will be a mess.
I think they must be planning a large lake because it also says expanding its summer operations so they will need major water infrastructure upgrades.

Summer water is easily seen to by a bore I reckon. The rock up there is shit, lots of groundwater (the geomorphology of Soho is pretty interesting, wonder how well it'll hang on when the Alpine Fault goes).

Yea, fair enough, I guess I'm close enough to the science that grim reality can set in sometimes. Hopefully, when it happens, the Moonlight fault isn't triggered, in which case QT should get through ok. Because if Moonlight (or one of half a dozen other faults in the immediate vicinity) are triggered, well, shit, I don't want to be in town for that.

On the subject of lifts, There was a post by James Niehues (the guy who paints trail maps) earlier this year of him doing the new Cardrona trail map. the earliest one he posted showed new lifts below captains and in the base to the north of captains...

What about the basin (Andersons?) skier's left of Captains. Wasn't there talk and consent to put a lift in there? That's got some tasty, steeper stuff.

So for people who are interested, I've mapped and calculated the planimetric (i.e., 2-dimensional) and 3D surface area of Cardrona Ski area. They are taking the piss when they say their current area is 345 ha.

The skiable area of the ski area (i.e., the extent of what they mark as their ski area boundary) is 233 ha planimetric, and 242 ha 3D. Make of that what you will. I'll provide a number for Soho shortly (and might as well repeat for other southern lakes ski areas when I get around to it).

What you'll find is a differing in definition of ski area. ie inclusive of road up etc. Even the wording skiable terrain is subjective. Everything is skiable provided there's snow there.

Maybe. But Remarkables have a remarkably accurate number stated on their website.

I've do have the benefit of having extra data at my fingertips that gives me pretty good insight into what is really skiable, which I'm looking forward to being able to share more widely in the not too distant future.

So in planimetric terms, Soho (based on the operational area in @Draizuh s previous post) gives Cardrona another 493 ha (3D area is 521 ha). But, about 80 ha of this doesn't get reliable snow cover. So in total it would take the total skiable area of Cardrona up to 646 ha. Decent, for sure, especially by NZ standards. But well short of the 850 - 950 ha that has been thrown around in the press.

For @DPS Driver , in terms of skiable area, about the only viable area (good consistent snow cover, within their title) that I've left out of the Cardrona area above is that immediately below Captains, which gives them another 34 ha on top of what they've already got currently (which is, by the way, more snow sure than Goldrush, but less friendly terrain). So that gets them up to 267 ha (planimetric), still well short of their claimed 345 ha.

    Interesting!!!

    Maybe they're measuring it topographically;););)

Can you show us where your boundaries are? Do they own any land on the other side of the road? I'm interested to see what the boundaries look like.

Measuring it topographically doesn't add much at all (think Pythagoras/Euclid) - that's exactly what the 3D areas I refer to are.

Nope! Cardies own it all da way down. I don't think there's much left of mt cardrona station at all.
