I noticed that. The first link, I think. Some amateur site. That is why I went for the second link. :)

I tink its the Paralyser, far left, then .... finishing with Mt P just poking its head up on the far right.

I think North P (as in the site of the T bar) and the Mt Piper ridge show up
. If I could be bothered opening up Google Earth.... ;)

edit. Fail. much of it is Stilwell and surrounds, at CP.

VSG, have you done the drive from Khancoban to Tooma? Last time I did was a year after the 2003 fires and there was total destruction around there.

I thought it was a 'die back' virus that did the damage around perished and not fires

Some areas are dieback, caused by a combination of drought stress and the citrid (I'm not an insect person and I always forget its name) moth. Normally the moth larva bury into the core of the tree, but when the tree is suffering drought stress the moth larvae stay in the living part of the tree and ring bark it. You can see it really clearly in some of the dead trees around smiggins. They have grooves in their trunks and no lignotuberous regrowth.

The dieback you're taking about was similar CM. P. vimmenalis rather than P. pauciflora and the insect was a beetle rather than a moth. To my understanding the mechanism was similar though. One interesting result of the P. vimmenalis dieback is how without the alleopathic chemicals of the P. vimmenalis heaps of Sweet Briar has popped up under the canopy of the dead trees.
