    Iconic in 2009
Falls Creek resort grew in iconic status with these additions in 2009:

    - Summit Chairlift
    - International Poma
    - visiting Aussie pro skateboarder Corbin Harris
    - Bogong High Plains Road
    - Great Victorian Bike Ride

    More iconic in 2010
Further iconic growth has taken place at Falls Creek during the 2010 green season:
    - the journey between Falls Creek and Hotham
    - a ski wear brand
    - Winterhaven restaurant

Resort guests may soon be able to enjoy almost their entire Falls Creek experience in a perpetual state of iconic bliss; driving on the iconic Bogong High Plains Road, riding the iconic Summit Chairlift and iconic International Poma, wearing some iconic ski wear and dining at the iconic Winterhaven restaurant. Some iconic accommodation is probably needed ...

Not yet iconic, but "crudities, anyone?"
    - crudities [króodi tees]; roughly or unskilfully made or conceived, vulgar or obscene.

That does not seem particularly appetising and I suspect they might actually be offering:

    - crudités [króodi tay]; small pieces of raw vegetables e.g. carrots and cucumber, eaten as an appetizer or snack, often served with a dip.

I'm not sure i'd be capable of bearing that much icon in one holiday.. i might need to go elsewhere and take it a bit easier

I would actually prefer that there was no more material provided on this theme and fear that trying to maintain a catalogue of the myriad icons at Falls Creek might be the path to madness.

I emailed this thread to someone in marketing at one of the 'Big 5' resorts - they had a good chuckle!

CarveMan. I assume person in marketing at one of "Big 5" resorts was NOT at Falls Creek!

I doubt they would be laughing at Foxy making fun of them! Personally though, I am very amused. [IMG]

In the latest Falls Creek media release (7 May), Winterhaven restaurant has retained its 'iconic' status from the previous media release. Some spin recycling is clearly in operation (reminiscent of the Resort Management Boards). No new Falls Creek icons at this stage; OishiiGo is probably disappointed.

That title had occurred to me, but we can usually rely on them providing a broader range of interesting bizarre material during the season, such as describing Last Hoot and Wombats Ramble as 'the main ski runs' (2009) or the usual hyperdrive hyperbole "... enjoy some suberbly groomed, snow-covered slopes at Victoria's most picturesue alpine resort" [original spelling].

After the first flurries of flakes fall we should expect to see something similar to this cameo.

To borrow a phrase used by Falls Creek marketing, more icons are just 'the icing on the cake.'

A few snow flakes have been observed lately we are led to believe. This should immediately prompt the iconic phones to start ringing off the hooks with desperate punters seeking to reserve their bookings at Victoria's largest resort. Without any doubt another bumper season is on the way for the picture postcard village with the iconic ski-in ski-out roads.

I'm wondering if FC's iconic marketer hasn't found a new job at Lonely Planet. Got an email from LP today:
Iconic activities on iconic travel experiences!! Wow!

There haven't been any recent additions to the Falls Creek 'Almanac of Iconic Inanity', but followers of this thread may be interested to learn that the Queensland Government has a formal process for the declaration of iconic places; including special legislation and even an Iconic Places Panel.

Snow falling quite nicely at Falls
    fallscreek: 17-6-2010
Falls Creek-based Steven Lee, a skiing legend who is about to experience his 46th winter, says: "We had a good dose of snow for opening weekend and the snow falling now will assist in opening more lifts."
"It is looking pretty white on the ground there's quite a few centimetres cover already, it is building up."
"We could get between 15- 20cm out of this storm cycle. The light, dry snow coming down now is promising."
"They've already built a bit of a base on Scotts and Ruined Castle and if we get a half metre dump it would get things up and running."

OK, let me get this straight.
    1. A few centimetres have fallen
    2. There COULD be `15-20
    3. IF we got 50 then it would get things up and running

    Interesting.

I spotted that one, but by past standards I thought it was fairly restrained. Plus I'm not about to disagree with Steven Lee being described as a 'skiing legend.' Steven was probably lucky not to have been described as 'iconic,' but 'legend' might outrank 'iconic' in status anyway.

I think the problem is that someone has bought this thread to the attention of the Falls Creek spin-meisters.

There is nothing people in promotion dislike more than others making fun of their marketing efforts. So I suspect that not only have they toned down their hyperbole, they've also stopped using Foxhound's favourite word. [IMG]

So now we won't be able to make fun of them any more. [IMG]

I suspect there might be several more Falls Creek icons that are just straining to be identified. Time will tell whether Falls Creek marketing can keep the lid on them for the entire winter season. I had thought about a Google Map of Falls Creek plotting the location of the immobile icons so that visitors could accord them some proper respect.

Maybe they have a new spin-meister?

Look at their latest press release, the nearest they get to the hyperbole of old is saying things are "quite nice".

Very well spotted, Tim Craig. Perisher contracted a minor iconic contagion last season, awarding iconic status to the Towers Run and Happy Valley areas. So with the inclusion of Zali's, Perisher now has three icons.

Maybe there is a fixed number of icons that can be allocated at Australian resorts in any winter season, so if they start to reach their limit at Falls Creek, they begin appearing at other resorts. I am hoping people can help to keep track of them during the season.

Be careful with this one, but you can click here to browse the Falls Creek media releases, accompanied by the soundtrack of an event that has coincided with the official start of the winter season.

That latest press release and accompanying photo is the most disgraceful load of rubbish I have ever seen posted by a ski resort on this website. It may well be that within a few days we have a good dump of snow, but as things stand now there's almost nothing - even on snowmaking trails. For the resort to say...

"It is an ideal scenario for everyone involved in snow-related businesses. A classic winter weather pattern has emerged with a series of cold fronts sweeping across the bight which allows alpine resorts such as Falls Creek to open more lifts and additional snow-covered terrain."

... is such a massive lie, they should be made to refund every dollar to every unsuspecting newbie who reads it and heads up there this weekend.

This thread seems mostly to be poking fun at Falls Creek's overexuberant PR, which is an appropriate tone, but Falls has totally overdone it this time. FALLS PR - I KNOW YOU READ THIS and you deserve to be absolutely crucified for this. In fact, as a journalist, I might do the job myself. WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO SAY FOR YOURSELVES? Come on, I dare you. Defend the indefensible. Right here, right now. In this thread. Better still, get Steven Lee to do it. As a media man himself, I bet he'd never put his name to such codswallop.

Most resorts get away with blatant lies and mis-representations.

From where they film the snow report to the bullshite media releases.

A few people just need to spend the time and whine to the ACCC, probably is no-one does it so they continue to publish rubbish.

That is an absolute disgrace. I'm at Buller, not sure why, there is next to no snow and it's pouring. Falls won't be much different. The use of that photo is appalling.

Far enough the website is a portal for this stuff then.

I wonder at what point they would make changes then?

It must be very frustrating for the team here...caught in the middle....serving the punters and the industry.

The press release that so incensed myself and others has now vanished from both this website and the Falls Creek website too. Anyone know what happened? Is this a victory for the spin-watchers? Also, does anyone have a copy?

I was at Falls Creek over the weekend and missed the online furore over Friday's media release. I think the media release was cleverly crafted, with some claims that were debatable, but none that were demonstrably false. The media release did exactly what it was designed to do; it gave the impression of sensational conditions at Falls Creek and an accompanying file photograph (which I understand may have been uploaded in error) further reinforced that impression. Disinformation or 'spin' typically consists of a kernel of truth around which a web of falsehood is woven.

The reality at Falls Creek over the weekend was torrential rain on Friday, later turning to about 5cm fresh snow overnight. Temperatures stayed cool over Saturday, Sunday and Monday enabling considerable production in the snowmaking areas. It is very rideable in the snowmaking areas, in particular the fine quality of the snow on Main Street is very good in 'character building' circumstances.

Kudos to the snowmakers and the spin-watchers.

Well spotted, somebody else. As surely as night follows day, it seems there is always another Falls Creek icon just waiting to emerge. I was offline last week and quite oblivious to the fact that I was often sliding on the latest Falls Creek icon.

Wombats Ramble may have been designated as iconic because the previously designated iconic Summit Chairlift and iconic International Poma have not been operating due to the snow conditions. Wombats Ramble has been transformed from a simple green access trail into a narrow [day and night] human slalom course for skiers and boarders of all abilities; with a rider density and risk level to rival Bourke Street at Mt Buller.

Unstated is that access to Ruined Castle has involved a 12-seater minibus for guests, accompanied by a ute to carry their equipment, departing along a muddy track from the base of the Towers chairlift. The Scott and Eagle chairlifts provide lifting back to the Village Bowl area, but that route cannot be used to access Ruined Castle because the Scott chairlift is not a downloading lift. A quick fix for challenging conditions.

Highway 83 seems to have been reincarnated by Falls Creek media as 'Highway 87', but it was still closed last week due to insufficient snow cover (aside from the small lower section exiting from Nastar). Included among the 'eight lifts operating' are three conveyor belts; the Pete Train, Mouse Trap and Board Walk.

Hopefully the conditions will improve dramatically after some decent snowfalls. Perhaps prudence might temper any premature Falls Creek media celebratory ululating until it actually happens.

The genuine story that Falls Creek media might promote are the extraordinary efforts being made by mountain staff to cater for resort guests in very difficult circumstances. This includes the hardworking village shuttle service, lift staff, snowmakers, groomers and many others.

Incidentally, a recent trip to a different hill (dodging ice, slush, rocks and grass on a marginal crust) revealed the existence of a select coterie of 'Mt Buller legends'. I was left wondering if they are Mt Buller's animate riposte to the Falls Creek icons.

'Icing on the cake' is an iconic cliché overworked by Falls Creek media. In 2009 it was used to describe the resort home trails; this week it has been used to describe the current and anticipated snowfalls.

The fresh snow at the resort this week is great news; but realistically in many places there will only be the 'icing' and very little 'cake'.

    ありがとうございます.

The photo disclaimers are certainly a welcome change.

O/T: I expect others may have noticed that the Twitter hashtag #fallscreek is eponymous with a religious camp in the United States. It explains a few interesting feeds citing Biblical references:

Biblical citations about snow (e.g. Isaiah 55:10) or praying for snow with the #fallscreek hashtag might cause some serious camper confusion during the US summer.

I see they have been careful with this release.

    "strong winds and heavy rainfall"

"According to the Bureau of Meteorology"

"In turn this will hopefully increase the number of lifts"

I often wonder how much notice of these forums the resorts take.
