Yup, had a second look, and the tree line is all wrong for the Slot. Could perhaps be the exit from Grand Coeur.

Steep? You better believe it. Did you not hear that Seth is doing his next extreme film at Falls?

is that a snow gun arm in the bottom centre of the pic? If so its likely to be around the last/fast hoot and its one of the wombats guns? Defo some camera tilt there..

if it is in the last hoot area, I don't think it could be on a marked run. if it's just a short pitch near a run, it may not be tilted. if that is a gun, i think the gun would have to be just above the aqueduct, after the big left corner. really can't say if there is a suitable bank/ridge in that area - but it's possible

I'm also doubtful about tilt because the background shows the saddle to little spion kop. if there was much tilt it would look very wrong

Currawong is close to the mark. I don't think there is any camera tilt at all, just an interesting angle.

I have also looked at the photograph a couple of times and I am concerned that the trees seem to be growing at a rather extreme angle. I am therefore now leaning towards the 'tilt' proposition.

Seriously, can someone just call Charlie and get this over with. He probably shopped it just to mess with everyone anyway.

I'd hazard a guess that it's off near little canada

if it was little canada area, you'd still need to be getting very close to wombats to get that background (actually I doubt that it would be possible there. to get high enough to see over the ridge like that, i reckon you could not get much slope)

It is a short little pitch between last hoot and wombats, I think. We haven't skied that area of falls all that much and I am not completely sure where it was on the trail map. It wasn't part of a named run, I don't think, and was more cutting the corner onto Wombats. The pitch is quite steep, but very short. If there is any tilt, it would be minimal, more the perspective.

I don't think that there is anything with that sort of slope on the Last Hoot. I'd be leaning towards the Slot/Cabbage Patch/Skyline

I am very certain its Village run or Cabbage Patch after digging up this photo.

    <img src="http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/6160/fcreporto.jpg" width="365" height="274">

The camera is on a little angle pointing not straight across the run, but slightly to the viewers right I think, which gives us a bit of an illusion but also puts the background into perspective.

If you look CLOSELY at the pic in the PRelease, you can see one or two prongs of the burn't out trees behind.

it gives me no pleasure to announce the impending birth of a new icon.

This Week in FC & MtB has scraped the iconic bottom of the epic barrel . The issue of Sept 17 says
FFS it hasn't even been built yet.

I'm sure that a month or 2 ago I saw the same publication call St Falls iconic, but I must have turfed that issue before quoting it.

BTW I think Ironbark must be going on the Southern Cross flats site, or very close to

what do you do in summer when there's no falls spin coming out?
i'm sure they want the building to be a focal point in its surrounds hence the word iconic. personally i'd have not used it so much but it gets the job done

That article is a load of crap. First 2 months of winter (including all school holidays) saw pretty much no snow.

2008 was a much better season than 2010 IMO - there was some crazy extended period where the temps remained below 0 and the snow was superb.

On the other hand why oh why does the FC media team do stuff like this? Do they have no regard for their credibility? [IMG]

Yep 08 was MUCH better than this year (when looking at the whole season). Great times at Hotham that year for 2 weeks at the end of July/start of August. Apparently Hotham claim to have gone something like 50 days with -ve temps, but id only believe that when I saw it.

qwill2 I don't think any resorts have regard for their credibility. Thankfully sites like this show them for what they generally are and force them to be more honest in general.

If you have the right topography, it is possible to have a mountain which combines being both 'iconic' and 'conic'.

That is a fairly simple calculation resort area = x acres or square metres or whatever.

One has to be the biggest and that is a simple mathematical value.

Its always been the largest. No spin here.

AFAIK they include Mt Mckay in the calculation, which is why.

Take a fair while to hike out to McKay ski it and hike back - you must be able to fly but then you are a Duck so I guess that makes sense.

It is referring to the lease hold area. Falls has the largest lease hold of any resort in Vic.

    Falls: 458ha
    Hotham: 320ha
    Buller: 263ha

    It is pretty definitive.

That surprises me as in addition to the main resort, the area controlled by Hotham RMB includes a long strip to the west incorporating all of the Great Alpine Road above the treeline with a bulge at the end to incorporate the lifts and ski runs at the Mt St Bernard club field. But I guess Hotham's area is long and skinny, whereas Falls Creek's territory is more blob shaped.

Anyway, since the Stirling Resort Management Board went broke, it has been incorporated into the area controlled by the Buller RMB, so I say that these days Buller is geographically the biggest resort in Victoria.

We are now into Falls Creek Green Season media release mode, so far there are no new icons to report but there seems to be some uncertainty about whether the rugby union team training at Falls Creek is called the 'RaboDirect Melbourne Rebels' (correct) or the 'Robo Direct Melbourne Rebels' (incorrect).

    Media release here.

I think it would only be 'iconicide' if icons were removed, for example the iconic International Poma.

agree about the inter, but in some other cases (eg st falls) i think there is a defence that they were stillborn as icons, not killed

Given the new oversnow transport plan, i thought i should launch a pre-emptive strike:

    The new iconic Gully Gondola
The iconic [insert marketing wanchor name] stairways
    The iconic Lost Luggage Arena.
