Maybe a list of spin words can be strung together for the new season, a brain storm of cliches and hooks, appropriate for each resort; where the 'doctors' can draw inspiration afresh in attempts to get us punters loyal and spending? [IMG]

I will believe that when they have some sort of guarantee that a certain number of shops, cafes, restaurants and touristy activities will be open during peak times in summer. I took a large group (43 people spread over 2 lodges) up there from 26 - 30 December last summer and most shops, cafes and restaurants were closed. Only Max and Man were open to the public and even Gateway was closed.

Okay, Falls was better than Hotham and Perisher are in summer, but the place still had a feeling of desertion and desolation about it. Even my smaller trips pump well over $10,000 into local shops, hotels and cafes, so we sort of hope that there will be somewhere for punters to have fun and spend their money. Judging by feedback forms, the only package Hiking! tour based at a ski resort where there has been plenty for people to do if they choose to take a day off from the walks, is Thredbo. Shops and cafes at beach resorts are still open outside their peak season, so why not ski resorts? [IMG]

Thats right. Its because they spend MORE money and time working out how to spin-promote the place instead of actually physically making changes. Its an obvious joke almost, [IMG]

From many stays at Falls over the years I believe the commercial businesses have run the nos. From past trial openings and decided it's not worth
it. Problem is punters are scared off by the lack of 'life' & the whole chicken n egg scenario keeps revolving.
Would be nice to see a bit of State & Falls ck money to supplement summer opening - at least as a trial for 2-3 years. Then try to run businesses fairly unassisted (base level marketing etc...)
As a no brained revisit a public pool - kids love pools & parents like happy kids. #2 would have to be run a chair (express detach) over much longer period - get cloud 9 going on key summer hols. #3 would be a PV ranger/ info booth opening @ falls during busy pates of hols.

But we dealing with v conservative people here so little will probably - at least in the short term (;-/

I understand that one of the issues is the summer "season" is very short, ie outside the Boxing Day to NY's day period, it is pretty quiet. If that's true, then it a big ask to have a restaurant stock up on food, hire staff, for perhaps 2 - 3 weeks.

That said, we are usually up at FC during the Xmas/nye period and it is pretty busy, but funnily it still feels deserted. A paradox. The village lost a bit of atmosphere when the FC Hotel stopped opening. It used to be a lovely spot in afternoon - on the deck, under an umbrella, enjoying a cold one.

Agree Express and Summit, and probably Gully should run. Perhaps offer season's pass holders free rides?

Bogong: Gateway was open for lunch in that period.

I recall a thread about this 4 months or so back in Snow T.

Falls should aim for 6 weeks of sustainable off - season (christmas school holidays and easter holidays) in the long run. FCRM needs to bight the bullet and invest in decent off season activities (more then just mountain biking.). Run Falls Express and set up a little hub up top. Opening of cafe's and restaurants would follow.

    Re: SpinWatch 2010 - 2011

Of all Australian ski resorts Falls has the greatest potential to become a year round resort like Thredbo. I have no doubt that Thredbo slightly inflates their summer occupancy rates, but at peak summer times it certainly reaches critical mass and has a real buzz.

Essentially there is a need to get Falls Creek up to a critical mass of people in summer. Once there are a decent number of satisfied tourists in the streets, there are things to do, a variety of places to eat and people know that Falls will always be a fun place to visit in summer (as Thredbo is perceived to be), they will come. But every person who travels to Falls Creek in summer and finds the place deserted and desolate, will tell 10 friends and that will put them off visiting for years.

Falls could achieve this critical mass by:

    * Increasing it's summer walks promotions and improving it's tracks (i.e. the Ruined Castle - Mt McKay walking track is getting a bit overgrown).

    * Promoting the lake better. Of the large resorts Falls is unique in having an attractive large lake inside resort boundaries. (Yes, Mt Mawson and Guthega have lakes too, but they are both tiny resorts.) Perhaps have kayaks or yachts available for hire?

    * Assisting other summer activities to be established like horse riding, mountain bike tours, etc.

    * Guaranteeing that businesses that open in summer will be commercially viable by partly underwriting some of their costs. For instance a lodge that opens will be guaranteed say $100 per day if they don't get any guests. A restaurant will be refunded 25% of the wholesale cost of any unused meat and veges that have to be thrown out and if they make a loss, subsidising them $50 a day towards covering staff costs. A tourist venture such as horse rides, kayak hire, etc could also have a guaranteed (low) base income. This sort of thing would need to be carefully administered, but rorting is unlikely because the permanent residents at Falls Creek tend to know what everyone else is up to.

    * Consolidating their place as Australia's main altitude training centre, by getting funding for a big swimming pool. The huge pool at Thredbo is popular all year round and they don't even have athletes staying there in summer for altitude training, so once it's built a pool should be almost self funding.

    * Providing more summer activities in the town itself like films on the Green, child minding service, etc. The activities they already have are reasonably good, but sparse. Likewise, they could push the festival and seminar theme harder for otherwise quiet summer weekends to get the place up to critical mass more often.

P.S. Ulmer. I was at Falls Creek from 26 - 30 December 2010. I was busy managing a tour group of 43 people. As well as running a choice of three walks every day for the punters, we compiled a list of what was open before the trip and updated it when we got there. Gateway was definitely closed, as I guided an easier grade walk that went right past it at 12.15 on 27 December. One of the locals I was in contact with said that there might have been an illness in the owners family or something like that.

Ulmerhutte, Gateway may have opened on the 30th onwards, but it was definitely closed earlier on because we had quite a few people who took a day off from walking and were disappointed that they couldn't grab lunch there.

If you can source us a decent lodge at Falls (or any other good walking destination) for a modest price, please let me know, as we will probably repeat the Falls Creek trip (with a few minor tweaks) in 19 months.

Yeah, that was a laugh. They did such a good job, that they also cleared the area around Cloud 9.

Bogong: I don't think I can help you - I have never tried booking for such a large group. Why don't you try Ted Weekes?

I think its being dropped down from a low level helicopter actually.

Actually I think that picture is fake as I can't think of anywhere at Falls Creek where you could do that.

Though too much snow for it to be taken at Buller.

I'm guessing it was taken at Hotham or its another iconic photoshop job.

So 5cms is a DUMP..... ROFL.

Falls Creek leading the way with SPIN in 2011.......

    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-ne...2-1226069424611

COP that! Falls Creek's Sam Perry (left) receives an earful of snow from girlfriend Laura McCoombe yesterday after snow blanketed the resort.

With less than a week until the ski season opens officially, the 26-year-olds took full advantage of the icy conditions with a snow fight in the resort's square.

Forecasters are predicting a dream start to the season, with plenty more snow expected this week.

Falls Creek spokeswoman Deb Howie welcomed yesterday's dump.

"Sub-zero temperatures have meant our snowmaking team is already in full swing and combined with the natural snowfalls predicted for between now and next weekend, it's very likely that we will be able to ski on opening weekend," she said.

Temperatures dipped below zero yesterday morning, bringing snow flurries to all Victorian resorts. A cold front responsible for the icy conditions is the first of three expected over the next four days, with each bringing more snow and chillier weather.

    Oh...

    EPIC or ICONIC DUMP ???

    FC into full spin mode.

Facebook photos are just showing man made snow around Quay West.

However the savy armchair experts like me can easily see that FC is missing out so far on most of the snow. Probably 5cm tops.

If Infact and skidown hate Falls Creek so much, why are they posting in this thread? [IMG]

It's here to make fun of the hyperbole emanating from the FC PR Department, not to slag off the whole resort!

I like Falls Creek the mountain, I ski there for a couple of weeks a season.

I do not like the spin from FCRM.

This. Nice resort for those of us whose family are not super-doopper experty people, but the spin is really irritating.

some spin spotters get a bit too anal this time of year imo. Mountain spin always gets a smile from me. an aussie ski season wouldn't be the same without it.

    Re: SpinWatch 2011

the 'Flat Creek' comments do get a annoying as they are repeated almost daily on this site. What the Buller wanchors dont seem to understand is by posting over and over again how crap FC is, they are only working to increase lift lines at Buller.

I enjoy laughing at the marketing of all ski resorts, but bashing a particular resort over and over again I really dont get - it just makes the people who make the comments look like snobs

Buller has an equal share of Wanchors, try hard Wanchors and just plain Bogans.

    Indeed!!!!!!!!

Look while I bag out Falls Creek, I didn't really mind it and will head back!

But when I hear spin I will bag it out as needed [IMG]

Heck I'll probably be going to SIC [IMG]
