Had a pretty junky session @ flinders on sunday, still prob managed to get the best waves of the day.
Very moody day though, was lovely when it was sunny and only 1 other guy out, then all of a sudden it's grey, windy, and i'm all alone in a angry ocean..... another 20 mins, and it's 5 guys in the sun!

Find i am getting myself into good positions on a wave, but not bale to capitalise, like i see a good wall, but attempt to hit the lip or an agressive turn just ends up in mush turns, or getting caught in the whitewater, couldn't even manage a little floater....still i just need to be happy with getting into good position, instead of always being wau out front and only doing cutbacks...

Best tip given to me when I was at this stage is turn to the beach.

When you get that speed and can see that lip to hit, head to the beach first, this will give you speed down the wave and also open up the angle of attack up into the lip, making it heaps easier to do a carve/snap/what ever you want to do.

Do this next time you surf and it'll open up a whole new world.

Hey nfip, I think it was you who brought up the topic of tide watches early this year?
I said we had used Rip Curl watches for years (which went well but alway was replacing batteries each year). Last Xmas I purchased a new Nixon for our son. Battery lasted 11 months, going back in tomoz under warranty.

    Yes was me.
I have the Nixon now - since late June.
Still prefer the Rip Curl as it's easier to read
i.e Time and Tide times are all one the same screen.
The Nixon have to navigate thru screens to get tide times.
    another First world problem. !
Will get back to you when I go in for battery but from memory the Rip Curl batteries lasted longer than that.

    About an hour.
Half on the highway and half heading back in.

I used to have Rip Curl tide watches and for years they would work flawlessly, never had to change the batteries. You know the old saying, they don't make them like they used to......

Nixon was a bday pressie as the rip curl really is pretty battered / scratched up.
The bands and loops on the band biggest issue they crack up and split to easily.
Nixon doing the same now already just noticed.

    Oops sorry @nfip !!

Should have realised it was the start of Summer today :D

Well here's to a pretty decent, certainly above average Spring for the east coast, maybe not Northern NSW / SE QLD but certainly there has been plenty of swell along the mid to south NSW coasts.

I had my final spring 2016 surf on Wednesday from about 10:30-noon at North Palm Beach with a friend - just us and for part of the session one other guy in the water. 2' up to maybe 3' on the sets and a lot more oomph than we expected when looking at it from the carpark. I got a dozen or so and she got a few less but not a bad haul for a mid-week bonus surf.

Interestingly when I was having my apres surf coffee one of the young ladies who works there (who is a good surfer too) said a guy got scared out of the water the day before by a pretty close encounter with a big shark. Wonder if it's the same one we had about 10 days ago still hanging around or another one traveling past. I will definitely be keeping more of an eye out than usual on the weekend early sessions this weekend anyway!
